LotR: Lord of the Rebus

A rebus is a puzzle where pictures, letters, or numbers stand for words or parts of words. This game would be a little different, as it involves addition and subtraction, and it involves LotR-related stuff.

Example:

Ringwraiths(Black speech) - ring(Black speech) + carach(English) = an Easterling

Answer:

Nazgûl[Ringwraith] - nazg[ring] = ul

ul + fang[carach] = Ulfang

Notes:
 • It would be good if all elements were connected to Middle-earth. Elements could either be translations, descriptions, pictures, or...cryptic clues!
 • Operations will be from left to right, unless you put parentheses in groups you want done first.

I guess that's it. My first example:

(Mortals[Quenya] - cottage[Quenya]) + (A son of Elrond - (Horselords[Sindarin] - host[Sindarin]) = A daughter of kings.

Good luck!

Firiel?

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-12-2004 07:25 PM

Good show, immortal Sol!

Your turn.

Finwe 01-13-2004 07:46 PM

Ok then... now to try my hand at this newfangled game...

(Famous ship piloted by heroes) + (Given name of a Doom-pronouncing Vala - Spanish love) = lesser-known, rather debated son of a King who challenged and lost.

Try making head or tails of that one, although it actually isn't all that hard.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-13-2004 07:53 PM

Before I answer the question, may I ask a question: Are you hidden, Finwe? If yes, why?

Is the answer Baldor?

Finwe 01-13-2004 08:06 PM

The answer isn't Baldor.

P.S. "Hidden?"

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-13-2004 08:13 PM

I didn't see your name on "Who's Online?" Oh...never mind.

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 06:47 PM

Ship=Argo (Jason and the Argonauts)
Vala=Namo (Mandos)
Spanish love=amo

Argo+Namo-amo=Argon

Finwe 01-14-2004 10:05 PM

Right-o! Your go!

*chuckles at her childish rhyme*

Elrond of Rivendell 01-15-2004 04:35 AM

Son of Beor the Old - (Moon (speech of the Noldor) - A half of the World) + (source-river of Anduin - colour of one of the Istari) = Lord of a Dark Place

The Saucepan Man 01-15-2004 07:55 AM

Son of Beor the Old = Baran
Moon (speech of the Noldor) = Rana
A half of the World = A (half of Ea)
Source-river of Anduin = Greylin
Colour of one of the Istari = Grey (Gandalf the)

Baran - (Rana - A) + (Greylin - Grey) = Balin, Lord of a Dark Place

Elrond of Rivendell 01-15-2004 08:15 AM

Well done The Saucepan Man. Your go.

The Saucepan Man 01-16-2004 07:58 PM

Thank you Elrond.

Bearer of Bilbo + (Scented Plant - (X's Niece - Her Great Granddaughter) + (One of Beor's House - Builder of the Golden Hall)) = X's Land

This should be fairly easy if you can work out who X is.

Lindolirian 01-17-2004 04:14 PM

When you say "Her Great Granddaughter" are you talking about the niece's great granddaughter or X's?

The Saucepan Man 01-22-2004 08:17 AM

Oops! Sorry for the delay.

In answer to your question, Lindol, I'm looking for X's niece's granddaughter.

Any takers?

Finwe 01-22-2004 09:50 AM

Dor-lomin?

The Saucepan Man 01-22-2004 12:10 PM

Finwe, that may be correct. But then again, it may not. I'm not saying 'til you give me all the component parts of the sum.

NightKnight 01-23-2004 06:57 AM

Quote:

Bearer of Bilbo + (Scented Plant - (X's Niece - Her Great Granddaughter) + (One of Beor's House - Builder of the Golden Hall)) = X's Land
Bearer of Bilbo = Dori
Scented Plant = Athelas
X = Thingol
X's Niece = Eärwen
Her Great Granddaughter = Arwen
One of Beor's House = Bregolas
Builder of the Golden Hall = Brego

Dori + (Athelas - (Eärwen - Arwen) + (Bregolas - Brego)) = X's Land

Dori + (Athelas - (E + Las) = X's Land

Dori + Ath = Doriath

The Saucepan Man 01-23-2004 08:07 AM

A perfect answer, NightKnight.

Pray proceed.

NightKnight 01-23-2004 03:58 PM

Alrighty then, here it comes:

Pip's Father - Silent[Sindarin] + N + (Noldorin City - (First Age Book - Jewel)) = Stone

Elrond of Rivendell 01-23-2004 04:10 PM

Pippin's father=Paladin
Silent(Sindarin)=Din
N=N
City of the Noldor=Tirion
Book of the First Age=Silmarill(?)ion
Jewel=Silmaril

Paladin-Din+N+(Tirion-(Silmarilion-Silmaril)
=Palan+(Tirion-Ion)
=Palantir=Stone

Greetings,
EfR

NightKnight 01-24-2004 05:35 AM

Yeah, that's right. Carry on.

Elrond of Rivendell 01-24-2004 06:34 AM

Okay, here we go:

(Companion of Glaurung's Bane - Sindarin for "Land") + (Companion of Mablung - Son of Feanor) + A half of the World + (Part of the Eastern boundary of the Shire - Great River) + Colour of a famous book - 2(Great Sea in Middle-Earth - Sindarin for "Heart") - The other half of the World = Mountain

N.B. The "2" is not a typo!

EfR

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-10-2004 03:39 AM

Hey, Elrond of Rivendell! These two get an error message in my brain:

A half of the World

The other half of the World

Are these actual halves of the world, or half of the names for the world?

Thanks!
->Elenrod

Evisse the Blue 02-10-2004 04:13 AM

I thought at first the 1st half = Ar; the 2nd = da; but this got me nowhere :(
EfR, I think a hint is in order...

Miriel 02-18-2004 10:17 AM

Or one half = e, the other = a, maybe.....
I've given up on working this out myself, ;) so does anyone (particularly Elrond of Rivendell) mind if I post what I worked out in the hope that it can guide someone else to the answer?

Finwe 02-18-2004 04:53 PM

(Gwindor - dor) = Gwin

(Damrod - Amrod) = D

(half of the world) = e

(Baranduin - Anduin) = Bar

Red

2(Rhun - hun) = 2(R)

(Other half of the world) = a

Gwin + D + e + Bar + Red - R - R - a

= Gwindebed

That sounds remarkably like Mount Gundabad, so I'll go ahead and make that my official guess.

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-18-2004 08:39 PM

BDQ Resolution No. 1

Since EfR is not here, I guess it'll have to be given to the one who guessed.

That's you, Finwe. :)

Evisse the Blue 02-28-2004 02:59 PM

*bump* Finwe?

Finwe 02-28-2004 04:39 PM

Ah... right... sorry then...

(Life that we breathe - r) + (Elvish under) + (Elvish vocal performance) + (Elven foot) + Note = a masterful performance

Yeah... this ones probably going to be really easy... Stupid fatigue headaches don't let me think...

Firefoot 02-28-2004 04:58 PM

Life that we breathe-r = air
Elvish under = nu
Elvish vocal performance = lin
Elvish foot = tal
Note = la

(air-r)+nu+lin+tal+la=ainulintalla

Sounds like Ainulindale.

Finwe 02-28-2004 05:03 PM

Yup. Your go.

Firefoot 02-28-2004 05:56 PM

Here goes:

(Wizards - Elvish feminine high) + (Northern lamp - Elvish blue) + (Darklord's stronghold - Elvish tower) + 2(Sirion fen - black rock) + (Elvish speak -(tree shepherd - t)) + (Bergil's uncle - (fearful companion - d)) + (Land of Holly - southern part of Doriath - e) = shard bearer

Finwe 02-29-2004 03:30 PM

(Istari - tari) = IS

+

(Illuin - luin) = IL

+

(Barad-dur - barad) = DUR

+

2(Serech - erech) = S S

+

(Quenrë - (Ent - e)) = QURE

+

(Iorlas - (Dorlas - d)) = I

+

(Eregion - Region - e) = (nothing)

= Isildur's Squire

= OHTAR

(The "Elvish speak" clue threw me off until I got to the end.)

Firefoot 02-29-2004 04:56 PM

Yes, Finwe, go ahead.

Looks like I added an extra ER into Eregion...but you got it anyway.

Finwe 03-01-2004 10:57 AM

All right... here goes...

(Lovesick Elf - metal pole) + (Tree-guardian - Elvish dual ending) + (Fiery tragedy - Elvish war - proud boast - exclamation of pain) = A famous Elf with a lesser-known, much-debated history

symestreem 03-15-2004 04:24 PM

(Lovesick Elf - metal pole) + (Tree-guardian - Elvish dual ending) + (Fiery tragedy - Elvish war - proud boast - exclamation of pain) = A famous Elf with a lesser-known, much-debated history

(Finrod - rod) + (ent - t) + (Dagor Bragollach - Dagor - brag - o) = A famous Elf with a lesser-known, much-debated history

(Fin) + (en) + (llach) = Finenllach, Finellach, or Finlachen, however you want to spell it. An obscure name for Gil-galad.

Finwe 03-17-2004 07:34 PM

I was looking for Finellach, and yes indeed, you got it. Carry on.

symestreem 03-17-2004 09:05 PM

(Uncle of Beren minus [night-sighted elf minus lower appendage] - expression of cold - the last remaining letter) + (Bor's "shortest" son- not timid- the beginning of Elvish east) = a very big object and a cry

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-17-2004 09:59 PM

(Grandfather of Beren - [night-sighted elf - lower appendage] - expression of cold - the last remaining letter) + (Bor's "shortest" son- not timid- the beginning of Elvish east) = a very big object and a cry

(Bregolas - [Legolas- leg] - br - [last letter]) + (Borlad - Bold - r) =
