Freestyle Trivia!

Here we go: freestyle, anything you want to ask, try it, find out if you're really as Tolkienfide as you thought! I know I found out I wasn't! Here's the first one, who stated the quote that is my signature,

Quote:

"'The strongest must seek a way you say? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming, and for running light over grass and leaf, or over snow -- an Elf.'"
Maybe that's too easy...oh well!

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 05:35 PM

Easy! Legolas, I suppose.

Durelin 11-15-2002 05:43 PM

Damn

Durelin 11-15-2002 05:45 PM

It was supposed to be easy! Um yeah, yeah, it was! I sware! Anyways, love your pic, can you help me get this going or maybe I should forget about trivia. Maybe I'll trash my topic. Man I'm stupid!

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 05:49 PM

No it was good, I just felt like quoting Bilbo from the Hobbit when he answered the first riddle.
Anyways, .... How was Elwing rescued from death?

piosenniel 11-15-2002 05:51 PM

Through the power of Ulmo. In the form of a white bird.

Durelin 11-15-2002 05:53 PM

Im on chapter 2 of the Silmarillion. It's pathetic. Im sorry but I don't feel any better about my question! Kidding, just kidding!

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 05:54 PM

Very good pio!

piosenniel 11-15-2002 05:56 PM

Who was the Rider (also called The Hunter)?

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 05:56 PM

I believe that would be Oromë.

Durelin 11-15-2002 05:58 PM

The dark, mysterious mounted figure who captured Elves who strayed from Cuivienen! Oh yeh I rock!

Durelin 11-15-2002 05:59 PM

Oh man, not again!

piosenniel 11-15-2002 06:03 PM

He resembled Oromë, but was not him. Possibly doing this to drive a wedge of ill feeling between the Elves and the Vala.

Guess again!

Gotta go! I'll be back! With a better brain!

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:04 PM

Wait! Did I get closer?

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 06:04 PM

Well then does Durelin have it, or does this Rider have a name?

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:06 PM

Do I? I'm staying!

piosenniel 11-15-2002 06:07 PM

That is what the rider did - he does have a name.

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:08 PM

Oh! He was "probably Melkor"!!!!

piosenniel 11-15-2002 06:10 PM

Excellent! I would have accepted either Melkor or 'one of his Dark servants'.

Carry on!

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:13 PM

YES!! Okay,

Who is Camlost?

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 06:13 PM

Beren son of Barahir.

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:17 PM

Cool dude! Next!

piosenniel 11-15-2002 06:18 PM

Called Camlost (Empty Hand) because he lost both the Silmaril and his right hand holding it to Carcharoth.

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 06:19 PM

What was the first name that Men gave to an Elf an what did it mean?

piosenniel 11-15-2002 06:32 PM

Did you mean Tinúviel - 'nightingale'?

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:35 PM

Nomin,the Wise!

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:36 PM

Am I right?

Lindolirian 11-15-2002 06:36 PM

Durelin has it!

piosenniel 11-15-2002 06:37 PM

Good, Durelin. I'd forgotten that!

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:41 PM

Oh yeah! Okay,

Where did the men get the name Nomin? Come on, in detail please!

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:46 PM

Think! Or look it up if you want, there's no one to stop you!

piosenniel 11-15-2002 06:49 PM

From the Sindarin root 'nóm' meaning wisdom. It was the name applied to Finrod by the Edain to whom he gave instruction when they first arrived in Beleriand.

Nómin was the name given the Eldar by the Edain after first contact.

Durelin 11-15-2002 06:53 PM

Excellent! NEXT!

Grendel 11-15-2002 08:59 PM

From which group of languages did Tolkien draw inspiration for the place-names in the Breeland?

piosenniel 11-15-2002 09:20 PM

Celtic, eh?!

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-16-2002 03:20 AM

I'd say it was some sort of British language... perhaps English, Gaelic of some descript or Anglo-Saxon?

Huh? U people are too smart for me! hehe!

TolkienGurl 11-16-2002 11:59 AM

I just found it! poisenniel, it is Celtic:
Bree = hill
Chet = woods
Combe = small, deep valley

We should wait for confirmation from master Grendel first, though!
