Priscilla Tolkien RIP

The last of the Professor's children has gone to join him: his youngest, and only daughter, Priscilla. She was 92.

In childhood, Prisca owned a family of stuffed koalas named the Bingos, which may have inspired Frodo Baggins' original name. Much later, in the 1950s, she accompanied Tolkien to Italy on the only travel he ever undertook, after his Army service, farther than a ferry-ride from Britain.

In 1992 she co-edited with her brother John The Tolkien Family Album. She served for many years as Permanent Vice-President of the Tolkien Society.

Priscilla never married and is survived by no children.

Terrible news. The end of an era.

Priscilla was unbelievably kind to the Tolkien Society. A presence at Oxonmoot for many years, hosting a lunch reception at whatever college the event was being held at (and at the Town Hall before the TS started using colleges) and holding us spellbound with little anecdotes and memories.

I'm so sorry I was never able to make Oxenmoot. The future doesn't bode well either.
