Boromir never faced a Nazgul, I guess
.... or rather the witch king in particular

Eärnur doesn´t appear in LotR.

charly 10-05-2002 10:46 AM

Hey, did I just post reply No. 400? COOL!!
=> Sorry, just felt like letting you know... don´t sue me ´cause it´s not Tolkien-related... please!!

Susan Delgado 10-06-2002 02:56 AM

Legalos? You there?

Legolas 10-07-2002 07:50 AM

Telchar got it. To my knowledge, he never saw a Black Rider.

Telchar 10-08-2002 03:28 AM

Luthien
Hurin
Sam Gamgee
Aragorn
Gandalf

Susan Delgado 10-08-2002 08:51 AM

Luthien battled Morgoth? Luthien possesed a Silmaril?

Telchar 10-08-2002 09:06 AM

In general when I post an 'odd man out' the four others usually have something in common like they all had or was something or had done, tried or suffered something that the odd man out hadn't - that is there is a connection between the four that the fifth lack. Exsample:

Gloin
Durin VI
Telchar
Thrain
Nain

Wrong answers could be: Durin is the only one that is named Durin (kidding to make a point) or Telchar is the only one that made a knife used by Beren. See that doesnt make any connection between the other 4 besides the obvious fact that Beren only used Angrist or that the others obviously wasnt named Durin.

Right answer would or course be that: Telchar wasnt of Durins line or more precise that: Telchar wasnt King of Durins House.

Then you go: NEITHER WAS GLOIN - and this is the trick part of the question (which is always a nice feature to add I think) Yes he was... check the family tree.

So obviously Luthien batteling Morgoth or holding a Silmaril is not the correct answer.

Cheers T

Susan Delgado 10-08-2002 09:12 AM

A right answer could be either something the odd man either does or does not have in common with the others. Read the rules on the first page, you'll see.

Telchar 10-08-2002 09:18 AM

I merely tried to explain that there was at least an atempt of wit when I asked a question - and secondly I know the rules - I was the one that started the idea of 'odd-man-outs' at the Barrow Downs Susan.

Turambar 10-08-2002 01:09 PM

Does the answer have to do with rescuing ???

Telchar 10-08-2002 03:09 PM

It could have Turambar but resquing would be very specific - go on.

Turambar 10-08-2002 04:51 PM

Well, Luthien rescued Beren from Tol-in-Gaurhoth; Hurin rescued Turgon at the Nirnaeth (I think); Samwise rescued Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol; and Gandalf rescued . . . uhh . . . Frodo and Sam from Mount Doom ?? That would make Aragorn the Odd Man Out ? Is this even close ?

Your hint seems to suggest a specific kind of rescuing -- I'll give this some more thought.

Legolas 10-08-2002 05:48 PM

Aragorn and Glorfindel rescued the hobbits from the Nazgul.

Telchar 10-09-2002 12:32 AM

Hmmmmm I actually thought you got it Turambar. Sorry you didnt. you are not that far away though.

Turambar 10-09-2002 12:31 PM

Well if it was Frodo instead of Sam, I wd say that Aragorn is the OMO because the other were all imprisoned in a high place:

Hurin - Thangorodrim
Gandalf - Orthanc
Luthien - Hirilorn
Frodo - Tower of Cirith Ungol

But Sam wasn't really imprisoned in the Tower. And I'm not aware of Aragorn being imprisoned. So I'm stuck . . .

Telchar 10-09-2002 05:28 PM

Turambar I think you should go on - this have gone long enough - and you were first close and secon found a really good answer, which btw was part correct - Aragorn is the OMO - but what I had in mind was that the other four was rescued by eagles or were airborne by eagles and Aragorn never was

Please proceed

Turambar 10-18-2002 10:58 AM

Gandalf
Elrond
Goldberry
Galadriel
Aragorn

All but one did something in LotR. What they did was not remarkable or unusual, but the Odd Man Out never did it in the book.

Lothiriel Silmarien 10-18-2002 12:45 PM

All of them let guests (the fellowship) stay in their home except Gandalf. And Aragorn did too, when he became king, he let them stay.

Turambar 10-19-2002 03:22 PM

That;s not it, Lothiriel, but it's that kind of ordinary thing I had in mind. The OMO is never specifically described as doing this (I believe).

Childlike Empress 10-20-2002 12:59 AM

Galadriel was never described as sitting in a chair?

Turambar 10-21-2002 12:31 PM

Again -- good guess, but not it.

HINT: Tom Bombadil could DEFINITELY be added to the list ! So could almost any hobbit, certainly Frodo, Bilbo, Sam and Pippin.

charly 10-21-2002 01:21 PM

What about.... Gandalf because he never was described eating?? I´m not sure, but if you say hobbit.....

Lothiriel Silmarien 10-21-2002 01:47 PM

Goldberry never gave counsel to anyone?

Susan Delgado 10-21-2002 10:52 PM

Elrond never sang?

Turambar 10-22-2002 06:34 AM

Correct, Susan. Or at least, LotR does not describe him doing so.

Susan Delgado 10-24-2002 01:47 PM

ooh

Ok, I'll post one as soon as I come up with it

Lindolirian 10-30-2002 04:08 PM

the suspense is killing me.....

Turambar 11-11-2002 11:35 AM

I wd say that anyone can go at this point.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-12-2002 03:51 AM

Ok, I'll have a go:

Frodo
Arwen
Sam
Galadriel

Eruhen 11-12-2002 10:19 AM

Easy: Arwen's the only one who never bore a Ring of Power.

Edit: OR, Arwen is the only one who never passed over Sea.

Which, if one of these are right, were you going for?

[ November 12, 2002: Message edited by: Eruhen ]

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-12-2002 11:51 PM

Yes, it was the passing over sea thing I was after, although I would admittedly have given it to either. Proceed.

cookie_crazy 12-02-2002 04:45 PM

I guess someone else can go so I'll give a really pathetic one

Frodo
Sam
Aragorn
Elrohir
Pippin

Gwaihir the Windlord 12-02-2002 07:19 PM

Elrohir; either he was not in the Company, or he never saw the One Ring.

cookie_crazy 12-04-2002 04:26 PM

Quite true but still, not the answer I was looking for. Wait! Hmmmmmmm... Yeah, I think this still holds.

Gwaihir the Windlord 12-05-2002 02:11 AM

Ok, I'll take a long shot and say Pippin. He was the only one not related to any of the other characters mentioned. Very unlikely explanation though...

hobbitlass 12-06-2002 06:44 AM

Perhaps you meant Sam, arent Frodo and Pippin cousins? At least distant cousins?
My pitiful attempt, Elrohir is the only one who has magical powers. Ican't think anything better than whats already posted.

cookie_crazy 12-06-2002 05:33 PM

You're right Gwaihir when you say it is Pippin but I want an explanation with it. I'm gonna tell you because I'm not sure if this is right. Pippin was the only one whose mother waasn't mentioned. Tell me if I'm wrong though.

Lindolirian 12-12-2002 06:01 PM

Sorry, his mother was Eglantine Banks...
Anyways, I'll take it.

Morwen
Erendis
Beleg
Tar-Amandil
Luthien

the real findorfin 12-14-2002 06:29 AM

Beleg is the only one without royal blood?
