I do not think that there are ninety three thousand, three hundred and thirty six better sites than this one.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 10-15-2002 08:10 AM

Quite; although I do think we might appear higher on a list that only contained Tolkien-related sites. Many people are obviously wasting their time looking up things on the Internet that have nothing to do with Tolkien. The fools.

Bêthberry 10-15-2002 08:23 AM

Agree.

Although ... perhaps BW could develop a Middle Earth neopet generator. In place of a swoon forum.

...an amusing suggestion!
Well, it's a nice thing to see BD up there. Seems like we're near the top of all the Tolkien sites. Sure makes me glad to be here.

Maikadilwen 10-15-2002 08:37 AM

It should come as no surprise that the Downs are rated one of the best Tolkien sites. Because it is!

Middle Earth Neopets? Splendid idea. I want a Balrog then. One with wings...

Elenna 10-15-2002 09:53 AM

Oooh! I want a Barrow-downs neopet! Maybe a pet Gollum, or a pet Balrog.

I also don't think there are that many sites better than the Barrowdowns, but when you consider how many sites there are on the internet, that's pretty darn good!

vanwalossien 10-15-2002 09:54 AM

lordoftherings.net is #6,427, and BD is #93000 something!? Man, people must get a grip on themselves. I happen to be of the opinion that BD is just as good!

The Barrow-Wight 10-15-2002 10:00 AM

The ranking is based on traffic, which is an indicator of popularity but not necessarily of quality. Still, top 100K in the world is pretty good!

Rimbaud 10-15-2002 10:28 AM

Yes, in reality, it's stunning. I stand by my earlier argument, though.

Alkanoonion 10-15-2002 04:08 PM

Congratulations Mr Barrow-Wight on such a great result.

As long as you let me I will never leave the Downs. In my opinion this is the Number 1 site on the web.

Bêthberry 10-15-2002 04:15 PM

Well, you know, All, when I thought of the Middle Earth neopet generator I was thinking more along the lines of a neopet Orli, who would bite and mess when drooled on.

Bethberry

Auriel Haevasawen 10-15-2002 04:16 PM

Wow, I had no idea such information was available, but then again as this is the only site I use in the whole of the net (very nearly) that's hardly surprising. Congratulations for being so popular and thank you for allowing someone as intellectually challenged as myself reside here for most of the past year!

NazgulNumberTen 10-15-2002 04:24 PM

all the other sites are probably porn.

Elenna 10-15-2002 04:38 PM

Bethberry: That was bloody BRILLIANT!!!!

And how about a pet Elijah, who would look troubled when fed?

Lush 10-15-2002 08:50 PM

Meh. He always looks troubled.

And Naz, you're probably right about the porn thing. That, and Orli fan-sites.

Birdland 10-15-2002 11:17 PM

I think being in the top 100K of websites is a major achievement. (I wonder just how many websites there are out there?)

Staying power must count for something, too. Seems for a website to survive for over two years is a major accomplishment.

Elenna 10-16-2002 03:00 PM

And it keeps growing, which is even more impressive.

In terms of hits, we're #93000. But in terms of coolness of members, we're #1.

NazgulNumberTen 10-16-2002 04:20 PM

...wow. we are the coolest even with me here. now thats something...

VanimaEdhel 10-16-2002 05:02 PM

And wow, people come even with me on here!

That would be interesting...although it would take up even more room.

*Cringes, remembering the "Swoon Room" discussion* Aaah...yes, a lot better.

Or a Neo-Hugo would be nice...when anything happens, it raises one eyebrow and says "Missssssster Underhill".

But, as Barrow-Wight said, just being as high as we are is really good, considering every website out there (think about it).

However, imagine if we were number one? There would not be the intimacy we have now. It would be like owning an account on yahoo.com. You do not know all the other people on there! No, I prefer this level of privacy.

Salix 10-16-2002 07:57 PM

Know what's scary? The Edmonton Public library and Calgary Public library sites have more web traffic then us! (Calgary public library has more traffic then Edmonton's )

NazgulNumberTen 10-16-2002 07:58 PM

i wonder what site is last...MY HOMEPAGE!!!

Yeah, I know, but I just meant that you deserve more hits! But I think Vanima is right about the privacy thing, I don't even know everyone here. But there is over four thousand members...

Neferchoirwen 10-18-2002 04:21 AM

4000 ++members, still growing---it may be impossible to know everyone in here. (Come to think of it, I don't see that much 4000++ numbered members posting--either that, or it may be that I don't chat) But my consensus would be that so far, is that the people around here are great. No other Tolkien site can be as homey and entertaining as this. Great job, BW!

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 10-18-2002 07:19 AM

4656 and counting. If this continues the Downs will become a necropolis before we know it. The homes of the living will have to be cleared away to make space for the new barrows.

ColletteTook 10-19-2002 05:04 PM

Well I dont know about any of you, but BD's is #1 in my book. Iv'e got my computer programed to automatically take me to the site when i sign on the internet!

Master Kia 10-31-2002 04:42 PM

WoW!!!
Barrowdowns is so popular!!!
...Bur it doesnt have so many members like the number of people that look at the Website...
Very good website indeed

Sleeping Beauty 11-01-2002 12:17 AM

Barrow-Downs deserves to be #1 on the list. It's one of the best Tolkien sites besides a good place to meet fun and interesting new people. ^-^ The Barrow-Wight has done a fantastic job of tying all these Tolkien fans together who otherwise would not even have a clue of each others existence. Good Job! =)

HerenIstarion 08-13-2004 12:23 AM

The site and board is even better than back than. Anything in the way of statistics available? :)

Saraphim 08-13-2004 12:54 AM

Yes...It would be interesting to see how much, exactly, the Downs has grown in the past two years, and if it has become more popular statistically on the internet as a massive whole.

I think it has. :D

I could be very wrong, and we are now at the bottom of the list, under NazgulNumberTen's homepage.

Amanaduial the archer 08-13-2004 04:23 AM

Ah yes, but then, other sites have been created - not necessarily desirable sites, but ones that nonetheless will get a helluva lot of traffic.

Question: does alexa.com rate every domain name?

Hmm - you can purchase the list of the top 10,000 sites for the very reasonable price of...$999! Gah!

EDIT: Ah, but behold, we can see the top 500! Hmm, seems the Barrowdowns isn't there :( but all you xanga bloggers will be pleased (or something like it) to hear xanga.com is 69th worldwide, and 21st favourite in English Language. ;)

Eomer of the Rohirrim 08-13-2004 10:45 AM

There are probably websites which advocate animal cruelty,etc...which are ahead of the Downs in that list. The world (and thus the internet) is a bizarre and bewildering place.

However, I would honestly say that the Downs is the best website I've ever come across. And Mr. Barrow-wight, isn't it words like that which really make you feel good inside? Rather than being #1 in silly little popularity polls.... ;)

The Perky Ent 08-13-2004 11:27 AM

93,337?!? That's my lucky number! Just kidding. Hmm...I always thought Google was the most popular. Hmm....oh well. That's a cool thought. At look on the bright side, we beat out over millions of sites. This place is, by far, the best :D

BTW, barrow-down's neopets? That would flock some people in ;)

Morsul the Dark 08-13-2004 11:35 AM

Imagine "Look at my baby Balrog it so cute........"

Indeed let us remember what we all know... Barrow-Downs is the ultimate site on the web

And to think I still play on it...

I don't think you would want to do that -- it's full of weird kids who chase Orlando Bloom.

Gorwingel 08-14-2004 12:36 AM

In the top one-hundred thousand!
That's pretty good :D

This is most definitely the best forum on the internet in my opinion (I wonder if there is a list of the forums with the most traffic?). I like it because it is so organized, and I enjoy that the topics are kept on topic (that's why I have been here so long).

Imladris 08-14-2004 12:38 AM

Yeah. The Barrowdowns is the only forum where the Mods actually do their jobs and where there is abosolutely no filth....

Great job you guys!! http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

Cheers,
Imladris

Marileangorifurnimaluim 08-14-2004 03:09 AM

Wow. That's darned good. And to think I get excited when my sitecollects 60 hits in a day. :D

Good point you put here.
Hadn't Google beaten Yahoo in the early 2000s?
I used the Internet for the first time in the mid 2000s and Google was the only search engine I had even heard of for a very long time.[IE used Google back then bcoz Bing hadn't been invented yet iirc]

Edit: I was not expecting that the site would accept my post here. Guess I just reopened an old thread :p
Came here from Maril's post history bcoz I was curious about how Tech looked like when I was a toddler.Alexa was a known entity back in 2002 as well which is pretty cool. Most ppl on this thread have not been seen for a very long time which is sad.
