First Age Trivia
Let's try to follow the standard trivia rules on this thread and keep it in the First Age.
When Glaurung first came forth from Angband, who fought with him? |
If you mean who fought against him, it was the dwarves of the Blue Mountains.
If you mean who fought alongside him, i believe it was Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs... |
Actually, Azaghal and the dwarves of Belegost came later.
I'm asking who fought against him - sorry for the confusion. |
I think it was Fingon who first fought Glaurung.
Yes indeed. Fingon and his men.
You may ask. |
Whose armies defeated Morgoth's Orcs in the Glorious Battle?
[ June 16, 2002: Message edited by: Lómelindi ] |
The armies of the Noldor under Fingolfin and Maedrhos were victorious in the Dagor Aglareb.
Correct. Your turn.
How many years did Gondolin stand? (from completion to destruction)
384
Legolas... you are correct.
Who was the mentor of Telchar?
Gamil Zirak.
Proceed, sir.
Who was killed in the exact same way and place of his father?
Maeglin, who was cast from the walls of Gondolin onto the Caragdûr like Eöl, his father.
Once again, you got it.
Heh, we lock horns again Lindolirian.
Here's a nasty tricksy one. How many maiar following Melkor have names in the Silmarillion and who are they ? |
What do you mean by "following Melkor"?
The Maiar mentioned are Ilmare, Eonwe, Osse, Uinen, Melian, Olorin (Gandalf/Mithrandir), Sauron (Gorthaur the Cruel), Arien, Tilion, Curunir, Radagast, "and others of the Istari who went into the east of Middle-earth, and do not come into these tales." There they are, in order. 13, if you count the indirectly named Alatar and Pallando. Also, you might've wanted "the Valaraukar, the scourges of fire that in Middle-earth were called the Balrogs, demons of terror" included. [ June 20, 2002: Message edited by: Legalos ] |
Well, for one Sauron, and also the Valaraukar. It is mentioned that Ossë followed Melkor for a time, but repented and served Ulmo once more.
Isn't the answer just Sauron and Gothmog?
Correct. The key word is following, ie continuing to serve and not followed, served for a period of time.
Ungoliant did serve Melkor once but had disowned him to be her own mistress. It could be argued that Thuringwethil may be included as it specifically mentions that she was 'wont to fly in vampires form', indicating that she took the form of a vampire bat voluntarily. |
If I am correct, then I will proceed. I will also proceed if I am not correct, so who cares.
Question: Who did Finrod love, and what kind was she from? |
I believe he loved Amarie the Vanya.
You are correct. Please feel free to proceed.
Okay, this one's easy because I'm too lazy to think of a harder one.
What secret name does Aredhel give to Maeglin? |
Lomion, a Quenya word meaning child of twilight or something like that.
You are correct.
Then I will proceed.
Who was the only in Feanor's army to speak against the burning of the white ships? |
Fingon ?
Close guess, but Fingon was not in Feanor's army, but his father's, Fingolfin's. It was someone close to Fingon, though.
Was it Maedhros, the friend of Fingon?
Yes, it was. Meadhros and Fingon was close friends, and Meadhros did not approve of Feänor burning the ships at Losgar.
Who of Men were ever allowed to enter Gondolin?
Huor, Hurin and Tuor were the only men ever to enter Gondolin, I believe.
Yes, that seems right to me.

Correct.
