Since the trivia types are now organised into groups, the Wight has asked me to start a Grab Bag thread. Any question you like, about any of Tolkien's works, is welcome.

To start it off, what was the original purpose of Hithaeglir?

Well, the mountains slowed down the march of the elves from Cuiviénen into the west, but in the Silmarillion there is stated &quot;[the Hithaeglir] were reared by Melkor to hinder the riding of Oromé.&quot;

The Riding of Orome simply meant that Orome lead the Elves. The purpose of the Misty Mountains was actually to hinder the Elves who were with Orome, not Orome himself.
So I accept the 'Riding of Orome' as an answer, but not simply Orome.

Now you can ask!

And on his wife's, 'Luthien'.

<img src="http://www.barrowdowns.com/images/posticons/wight.jpg" align=absmiddle> Re: Both

Alright, I should have explained in more detail.

The river Rhine plays a prominent role in the saga of Siegfried and the Nibelungs. There is one river in Middle-Earth which played a role similar to the Rhine in the course of the Fall of Doriath. This means, they both were involved in a special event which occurred in both legends.
Just think of the second part of Wagner“s opera...

You know, Sharku, this question has been bugging me since I first read it. It seems to me that for any river in ME to play the role of the Rhein, it would have to be source of the Silmarils and set all of the fatal business in motion as the Rhein was the source of das Rheingold. Now I'm even less informed about the Silmarillion than I am about the Ring des Nibelungen, but I didn't think that the Silamrils were linked to any river in the same meaningful way that das Rheingold was.
Nor even if the Nauglamir was the intended parallel do
I quite understand it, for I thought that its material came out of Tirion rather than a river. I'm baffled!

Galpsi came close, but bear in mind that, originally, the Rhine is not the _source_ of the Nibelungen-hoard, but, well...and there“s a river in ME who had the same function after Doriath fell.

Are you thinking of the Ascar, where most of Doriath`s treasure came to rest? It was renamed Rathloriel, which I think means Goldenbed.

To give it away so that this doesn't turn into a discussion of sexuality, I think Sharku may be asking where JRRT might have described someone's actions as having been done gayly of someone that might have been described as gay (cheerful). I don't recall these exact references, but I know they exist.
