Lothlorien - How do you imagine it?

Even after having read the Lord of the Rings for the seventh time I still find it hard to fix into my imagination the forest and elf city of Lorien. Tolkien's description is very brief and leaves a lot to the reader's imagination.

How do you perceive the Lorien and the Elfic city ( which I am afraid I have forgottent the name)?

Lothlorien to me is elevated to a level of the unimaginable. It is one of those places that is so beautiful and awe inspiring that my poor mortal mind cannot comprehend. And if this is true about Lothlorien...it is immeasurably true for Valinor. *sigh*

I always imagine the forest of Lothlorien as one of the more beautiful places in Middle-Earth. I envision the leaves of the mallorn trees, and teh soft blanket of grasses and leaves from years past coating the forest floor. I agree with gamegie though, i have a hard time envisioning Caras Galadon.

I could never really picture lorien in my mind. How the f can a tree be so large that very high upon it, there is 'a large house,nearly as large as a fortress by human standards.'

That painting representing Lothlorien with Galadriel's ship is indeed beautiful, but frankly it is but a beautiful river with trees in the Fall.

I somehow pictured the boat to be much much larger than that one, as more people were on it.

I can't wait to see how it will be shown in the film.

I'll put it this way:
If anyone ever goes to the Northern Virginia/Maryland area, I recommend going to a park called Great Falls. The first time I saw the falls and walked on the river trail, all I could think of was how it was a lesser version of my mind's eye of Middle Earth forests. It may be the closest real-life equivalent there is, if such a thing exists.

In the south of France, approx one hour drive from Nice, and behind Antibes lies a small moutainous area that we (my friends and I) liked to describe as the Moon. Its surface is a perfect representation of Tolkien's description of Mordor.
Rocks everywhere and no sign of life.

I think Tolkien inspired himself of the South of France landscapes to write some of the LOTR passages.

Moon?

Hmmm, the most desolate area in France I've seen were the north slopes of the Mont Ventoux... But even between the bare rocks of the moon-like south descent, there were patches of thyme... Is what you've seen anything like it gamegie? Or should I travel more?

But if you want real desolation, you've gotta come to Australia. Actually, it's not that desolated, but in summer, it's so hot you tend not to notice much in the way of life, other than flies.

I agree with the Mt Ventoux being desolate, but that area near Nice I described is worse. For I cannot remember there being anything else than rocks..

I always pictured the grey havens as a port in belgium I once visited, nieuwpoort (it must be sth. like newport in english). I rained really hard back then, and you could only see fog everywhere around you, though large ships were parting via the river the Ijzer.

lothlorien

i think lothlorien isn't that different from a real forest
like nature can be overwhelming as it is
but i also think that in the case of lothlorien
the senses of the fellowship are much sharpened by
their passed adventures and make them enjoy the beauty of the Forest in all peace, of course the way Elves are organized and benefit from natures resources
and the appearance of Galadriel contribute to their
experience.
i myself see this chapter as one of the most intense
and creative in lotr and never fail to read it!

I have always found Lorien to be easy to see in my mind. All is light and good is all I can say to sum it up.

The place I have most trouble with is Treebeards home that he take Merry and Pippin to. Trees on the side with a river running down the middle from what I remember. And a kindof spare room where the beds are, outside of which is a hole in the roof of the trees where Treebeards soaks up the mist that comes through. Very nice.. But hard to see in my mind.

lothlorien. . .

it is easy for me to imagine what lothlorien must have looked like. In early autumn, when the leaves start to turn - most especially after a light rain - I walk in the woods near my father's home. The golden canopy of maple trees, coupled with their dark gray bark, the carpet of freshly-fallen leaves, not yet dried and brown but still soft, their gold color enhanced by the wet ground, the crisp, clean air - all this reminds me of Lothlorien. Tolkien must have had the maple tree in mind when he described the mellorn. In the quiet of my father's woods, I can picture myself in his world, and I half expect to see the elves peering down at me from the golden treetops. This effect doesn't last long - the trees soon drop their leaves altogether, and the ones on the ground soon turn brown and dry up. Kind of like the way Lorien itself must've disappeared. But it's inspiring for a while - it lifts the spirit, and isn't that what Lothlorien is supposed to do anyway?

It's so very nice to read various people's impressions of places they have visited that remind them of Lothlorien or other places in Middle Earth. I was thinking the same thing, of a walk I did with my daughter through Epping Forest in England. And of another place on the Navajo reservation in Arizona that was so beautiful that it literally took my breath away. Keep looking for the beauty around you.
