Hail!
I´ll have a try posting a quiz question about the, IMHO,most fascinating aspect of Middle-Earth, the side of Evil:
Name at least seven orcs mentioned in LOTR (Uruk and Snaga do not count as they are not real names!) !

What does the word imlad mean? Give at least two examples of the word in use as a person, place or thing.

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

Imlad means &quot;Deep Valley&quot; (Im- deep Lad-plain, valley) Such as in Imlad Morgul (Deep Valley of the Morgul) and Imladris (Deep Dale of the Cleft, or Rivendell.)

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

Alright...
Here's an easy one...
What are the Three Themes of Iluvatar, and what are the dischords raised by Melkor? Name only two of the dischords.

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

Hmm, it is almost vague guessing, but I think the themes were first Éa itself, then the Elves, then mankind. Melkor´s dischords were, I think, the orcs, and another one maybe the wolves?

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

You have all but the last part right, but because of the question's vagueness, I'll give it to you. The orcs were one dischord, meant to mock the Elves, and the others were Goblins to mock Men, and Utumno to mock Almaren, where the Valar first dwelt.
At any rate, your turn Old Man.

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

So did I, Mr Kittle. I always thought that Goblins was just an expression for the smaller and sun-fearing orcs of the first age and those snagas living in the Misty Mountains. They were bred from Elves which did not make it to Valinor, but were captured by Melkor and corrupted; and as the breeds got better, and human blood joined the Elvish blood, so did the orcs grow stronger, from Goblins to Orcs. This division is still very common in other fantasy worlds, but I think Tolkien himself said that Goblins was just another word for orcs which he only used in The Hobbit and the early chapters of The Lord Of the Rings... where, in turn, Melkor corrupted dogs to wolves in mockery of the creation of Éru and the Ainur...
But alright, I´m not too sure about this anyway.

As for my question...hmmm...what was the constellation of the Big Dipper called by the Elves, and what by the dwarves?

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

Hmmm..none of you bold enough to even try, or what? To be honest, I must admit that it was the Big Bear (Ursa Maior) and not only the Big Dipper I´m asking for...

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

I was holding off to see who else might try ...

The Elves called it Valacirca...the Hobbits called it The Sickle.

Re: Orcs and other dwellers in the night

Almost. I´m not sure if it is explicitly written in one of the books, but I think the dwarves gave the constellation a name of their own. If I´m just making this up, then I´m fine with your two answers.

The road goes ever on and on

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day...

Upon the hearth the fire is red...

Eärendil was a mariner

the song/poem he made for the dunadan

I sit beside the fire and think...

then the changed version of &quot;the road goes ever..&quot; at the end of the story

that ok?

Re: Borormir

Hmm, since &quot; The road goes ever on and on&quot; is counted as only one song in the index, no matter in what version the song is, I´d only give you six out of seven.

BUT since I discovered a minute ago that &quot;Ho! Ho! To the bottle I go!&quot; was not written by Bilbo (as I had thought before when making up this question), I can only expect six right ones anyway. The last - the needed margin of tolerance - would be &quot; There is an inn, an old merry inn...&quot;.

Alright, your turn, Balin.

Gandalf, when reporting to the Council of Elrond.
He called Butterbur an *** and a fool because Butterbur was afraid to let the Hobbits go with Strider, where, in turn, this was good news to Gandalf (therefore he´s happy <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)"> ) that Barliman did not hinder Aragorn.

Easy question to get this thread going...

Who was the orc that (with his troops) attacked Éomer's éored from behind and caused most of their losses?

Eomer of the Rohirrim 04-12-2007 07:46 AM

Was that Mauhur?

Thinlómien 04-14-2007 06:19 PM

Of course it was, please take the thread. :)

Eomer of the Rohirrim 04-16-2007 04:20 AM

Has anyone heard 'Trollhammaren' by Finntroll? It sparked debate about whether it was wielded by the Trolls or against them. Regardless, with that in mind, please give me the name of the Orchammaren.
