Should the Hobbit trilogy been a anthology trilogy?

For example if Del Toro didn't left, two first movies is The Hobbit and closer to the book directed by him. While the last movie, a anthology movie of War in The North by Peter Jackson. I feel he's more suited for stories that are grand. War in The North, Dol Guldur assault on Lorien, Mirkwood and Battle of Dale has that epic scale.

The Hobbit should have been two movies, and two short movies at that. The ultimate failure of the trilogy lay in not trusting viewers, and not trusting the strength of the source material. Peter Jackson should have been thrust into the Timeless Void with Mellor.
