Apples
Anyone want to venture an opinion why there were so many scenes in the FOTR with an apple or two stuck somewhere in them?
Were they supposed to remind us that hobbits love to eat?
Were they symbols of the Fall of Man, reminders of the theme of good vs. evil/making the right choice?
Were they just a ploy on the part of the New Zealand Agricultural Society to focus on the desirability of their produce?
Was PJ just doing some sort of inside fan joke?
What's your opinion, and why?

I think they might of shown the apples, to show how carefree and innocent the hobbits are.
Take Pippin, they were travelling out in the wild, on destroying the ring, and all he was worried about was how many meals he was going to eat.
Could of also been a inside joke, but I would of loved to see Sam piffing an apple at Bill Ferny

Braeburns are apples from NZ that have recently (within the last couple of years) come into the markets in the US, maybe they are trying to push a little of their product. I noticed the apples too, and the peanut butter cookies Frodo had on his table.

Mmmmmm, Braeburns! My favorite apple (and I was raised on an orchard, so I should know.) We salute thee, NZ, for creating the Braeburn!
As for why: Apples are the perfect food. Portable, nutritious, delicious, and long-lasting without special storage. Any wayfarer in the wilderness should carry some apples. And they're great if you want to bop an obnoxious Breelander on the bean.
They are so perfect, that they became the subject of story and song, imbued with magic powers and various symbolisms.
I suppose they could have tossed Pippin a kiwi, but it wouldn't be the same.
[ June 07, 2002: Message edited by: Birdland ]

Many other fruits (that would have been around then) would spoil too quickly, pears, for instance.

Probably because there were no doctors in Middle Earth. And as we all know, an apple a day...
(But I do like Pio's idea about the NZ Department of Agriculture...
)
[ June 08, 2002: Message edited by: Evenstar1 ]
