The Saucepan Man 10-15-2004 09:43 AM

Come on folks, it's not that difficult is it?

Well, I'm not giving another letter since that would give it away. And that, in a sense, is another clue.

arcticstorm 10-20-2004 06:32 PM

Nob?
worked at the prancing pony
"nob, he came and told me that two black men were at the door"--butterbur

a doorknob is used to open a door

The Saucepan Man 10-21-2004 02:48 AM

Bingo

You are most correct, arcticstorm. Well done. :)

The chronicler in question was Merry, whom Nob found after shouting at the black figures stooping over him. The other clues you got spot on.

The thread is yours ...

arcticstorm 10-23-2004 07:47 PM

B
This name is shared by man and beast, he chose the place of his abuse after being released at the black chasm

HerenIstarion 10-30-2004 02:29 AM

Bill the Pony, I suppose?

arcticstorm 10-31-2004 12:56 PM

quite correct HerenIstarion

HerenIstarion 11-01-2004 01:20 AM

L now, than

Thanks

L is the next.

Give me, please, the name of the one who made many refuse, father of the first of the three of the same name

Turambar 11-02-2004 10:41 AM

Lenwë?

He was the leader of the Nandor, part of the Avari ("refusers") who abandoned the Great Journey, and the father of Denethor, after whom two Edain were named.

HerenIstarion 11-02-2004 02:37 PM

Indeed :) As I can't recall no names starting with ë, I suggest you offer us a next test with a capital e

cheers

Turambar 11-02-2004 04:34 PM

E:

His lineage was questioned by some, though he sounds like one who rode an elf-coach.

HINT: Gondor

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-18-2004 10:09 PM

Eldacar?

Turambar 11-19-2004 11:45 AM

Correct - good job. http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-19-2004 11:32 PM

R

Between the seer and hearer, the taker of the repented, found in the longest.

HINT: Wait for it. :p

NightKnight 11-20-2004 10:19 AM

Rauros!

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-22-2004 12:54 AM

Right through the dot!

Your thread, NK. :)

Nilpaurion Felagund 12-06-2004 02:34 AM

*bump*

Herr NightKnight von Schweden, wo sind Sie jetzt?

NightKnight 12-18-2004 01:16 PM

Ich bin nicht hier, nicht viel, so jemand anderes sollen fortschreiten...

In English: Anyone can have it.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-10-2005 10:08 PM

S

In the twilight, Ainu-educated, with slumbering desire for the Sea.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 01-12-2005 11:14 PM

A guess...

Elwe Singollo?

In the twilight: leader of the Sindar- elves of the twilight
Ainu-educated: learned from Melian, his wife
Slumbering desire for the sea: Even though he had sea longings, he never sailed, finding enough of Valinor in the presence of Melian.

[edit] Since he's also Elu Thingol and that still begins with E I suppose I ought to include it. ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-13-2005 10:06 PM

Ummm . . .

The answer begins in S, which was the last letter of the previous puzzle.

But Elwë Singollo is eerily close. In fact, I think the correct answer is in your post somewhere.

Anywhen, welcome back!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 01-14-2005 12:30 AM

Blush

How could I be so silly  .

Well then, let me modify my answer to Sindar , for mostly the same reasons as above.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-16-2005 07:02 PM

And that is correct!

Take the thread, Thunder Mistress! :)

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 01-17-2005 03:40 PM

R, matey!

Lone blossom, love struck and erratically following.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-17-2005 09:57 PM

Rána!

Lone blossom: Last blossom of Telperion.
Love struck: Loves Arien, Maia of the Sun.
Erratically following: Erratically follows Arien, so sometimes they show up together.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 01-17-2005 11:00 PM

Very nice, O quick one! You may proceed.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-19-2005 11:10 PM

A

The black, the mightiest, the fallen (literally).

I daresay, this one's quite a piece of lembas. :smokin:

Nuranar 01-19-2005 11:22 PM

I'll take it!

Ancalagon:

Surnamed "the Black,"
Mightiest of the dragon-host,
Fell "upon the towers of Thangorodrim, and they were broken in his ruin."

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-19-2005 11:25 PM

You'll take it, indeed!

The thread is thine, fellow "Fall of the North" player!

Nuranar 01-19-2005 11:40 PM

N

Dearly-held payment, sheen of starlight, great in size.

*yawn* It's too late to be witty. :o

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-19-2005 11:52 PM

Nimphelos?

. . . Thingol rewarded [the Dwarves for their aid] with many fair pearls . . . One there was as great as a dove's egg., and its sheen was as starlight on the foam of the sea; Nimphelos it was named, and the chieftain of the Dwarves of Belegost prized it above a mountain of wealth.

Nuranar 01-20-2005 09:08 AM

Yep yep yep

Your go!

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-21-2005 12:12 AM

S

The taunter with broken teeth and broken neck.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-24-2005 09:51 PM

Ummmmmm . . .

Anyone? Anybody at all?

Nuranar 01-24-2005 10:25 PM

A clue?

Any one at all? ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-24-2005 10:39 PM

A clue!

He was an Elf.

OK, that was three clues.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 01-25-2005 02:52 AM

Eureka

Saeros, it is!

Quote:

Now one there was in Doriath, of the people of the Nandor, high in the counsels of the King; Saeros was his name. . . [H]e taunted him. . .Then Turin in great anger took up a drinking-vessel, and cast it at Saeros; and he was grievously hurt (perhaps broken teeth?).

*************

Then Saeros fleeing in terror before him fell into the chasm of a stream, and his body was broken (body including neck?) on a great rock in the water.
-From the Tale of Turin Turambar, modifications by, of course, yours truly.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-25-2005 09:02 PM

The gruesome details of which I speak . . .

. . . could be found in Narn i Hîn Húrin, in the Unfinished Tales.

Nonetheless, you are correct! :)

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 01-25-2005 11:26 PM

Thanks muchly.

My copy of UT is at my parents house. A serious impediment for me.

Divider of the Great who eases the crossing and must be well protected.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-26-2005 09:16 PM

A Wag.

Sirion?

Divider of the Great: It divided Beleriand (the Great Land of the First Age of the Sun) in two?

Eases the crossing: Errrrrrrrr . . .

Must be well protected: In it is one of passes through Beleriand that Morgoth wanted to take, so it was well protected--until Bragollach, that is.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 01-27-2005 06:15 PM

Nope. :D
