Welcome back! |
Welcome back, Daniel.
wow. I am a bit surprised by all those welcomes. I figured I would just slip in and blend in the background, but that is not possible anymore. Thanks for all your welcomes, I know I made the right decision by going back here. I hope the future will be as good as this, then there won't be any dark clouds on my sky. I just noticed there are an abundance of women on this site...I'm beginning to like this place more and more.
Ya, Ive found that there are a lot of women on this site(Im one of them) and a lot I usually think are guys!
Carlas~ Like who?
Daniel, you asked what thread it was. If I'm not mistaking, it was one of those talking about who the greatest elf was. (though, that probably doesn't narrow it down too much)
I have an inkling. The thread, where Luthien was discussed, and I argued against that people should not decide for themselves. It became quite famous, although I am not althogether proud of it
Yeh I know this isn't important but I'm a newbie here and i would just like to say... THIS IS THE BEST LOTR SITE THERE IS!!!! THE CREATORS SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF THEMSELVES!!!!!
*Tinuviel pats whoever created this site on the back - pat pat* |
You have just patted the Barrow-Wight! But, just call him BW. Welcome to the Downs, Tinuviel the Nightingale. Isn't it great to be dead and rotting? My words of advice to you are: never start a thread on the Oscars. I learned that was a bad idea last night.
My rating dropped from a 4.8 to a 4.36!! [ March 24, 2003: Message edited by: Eressië Ailin ] |
Well, Eressie, your rating should now be back up a bit.
That's right, Daniel! That's the thread! I posted on it a few times too, and agreed with most of your comments. You were right in saying that not everyone has the same definition of greatness. Some people weigh certain characteristics more heavily than others. I did a little chart a few months ago with all of the major characters on it (from Manwe to Melkor, Frodo to Turin). On this chart I weighed six major variables that I considered to be my definition of greatness (gave the characters points on each one depending on how much of the variable they displayed), and Feanor beat Luthien. Actually, I think I killed that thread. Well, maybe not, but I did have the last post (one defending Feanor). Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. So, Daniel, have you checked to see what you missed while you were away? We had a great thread going on the Vanyar and Noldor, I think you'd find it interesting. Here it is- http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin...=1&t=003009&p= |
Here's another one, Daniel. This one is a debate on the greatest man of ME. http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin...c&f=1&t=002467

There are also a few people here that I thought were younger than they actually are. I personally thought that The Saucepan Man was a young college student from the United States.

Young? Well, I'll take that as a compliment, Gorwingel. College student? Ah, if only. My student days are alas long gone. From the US? Well, don't get me wrong, but I'm very proud to be English. |

I found that out when he posted his photo |
Wow, I feel very young. I must be one of the only 13 year-olds on this site! But not for long. Three weeks and six days till my b-day. I still feel very little and imature... Dang, I feel like an annoying teenybopper! I'm not, am I? At least, not completely?
hey thats better than being one of the only 11 year olds here.
also I thought everyone on this site was pretty young but a lot are older than i thought. |
WOW! Earwen, you're pretty young. Congratulations on your blessing of intellect and taste, my dear . I wish I could have been that smart at eleven... *fumes*
Wow, you're eleven? I wish that I had been blessed with at least some particle of sense at eleven. But alas, it was not to be... Young BDrs unite!
Yeah, I have been amazed about how much knowledge some of the young LOTR fans have these days. When I attended Ringcon last month I participated in a trivia contest, and some of the participants were really young, there was one boy who I think was maybe 9 years old and he knew who Theoden was.
Hmmm, I was 11 when I read the LotR. My little sister is currently at that age and Ive only just managed to persuade her that no, Sarah, Aragorn is not related to Saruman.
You must be a very mature eleven, Earwen. I know fifteen year olds who can't get through LOTR. And I didn't even pick up LOTR until I was thirteen.
thank you and my little sister is 7 and she knows the name of everyone int the FOTR AND TTT books. you guys are pretty smart too.
Well maybe the movies help a little bit with remembering the names, and understanding the story (especially FOTR), it certainly helped me tell the difference between Saurman and Sauron (I was one of those people who read the books after I saw FOTR, the movie was what really got me interested)
Same here but Im glad I saw them or I would never have read the books. My little sister loves the movies and thinks shes Arwen( ) and thats how I got hooked. The movies help a lot because they kinda of show you what everything could have looked like.
You kiddies may be smart, but I can beat you up!
But seriously, I wish that I would've become a LOTR freak at a much earlier age. Before I was 16 I didn't have much of a social life (because I didn't have a car to go places), so I would've had time to read all of Tolkien's books several times during those years. Instead, I just watched TV. You kids don't fully realize how lucky you are to know Tolkien at an early age. |
Well, Earwen, you have won the title of youngest downer I think. Gimli Son Of Gloin was youngest before he was banned, and he was 12 I think. Man, I thought I was doing well at joining at 13...

Well, I was nine when I read LOTR, because my father had filled me with the Hobbit and made a LOTR-freak out of me.
Thanks for the links, phantom, checking them out now. Also thanks for your support in that other thread, most of our advesaries never realized that their two quotes contradicted each other, making their argumentation impossible. |
No problem. I hope you enjoy those links. They were a couple of my favorite threads. Oh, and if you want to read a great thread initiated by obloquy, check out this one- http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin...c&f=1&t=002488

"The Hobbit" was possibly one of the first books ever heard by myself, and one of my first chapter books. The cover has now fallen off from overuse. I recieved a copy of LotR for my ninth (I think it was ninth) birthday, tried it, and stopped reading within the first page. But, when I heard that FotR was coming out as a movie, I hurridly read the book, and convinced my poor mother to read the entire trilogy to the rest of my family, which she actually did! And for an even bigger surprise, they all listened, even my Dad! I take pride in telling people that I've "converted," my family.
