A place of sight
a few there were like- Resting place of a Palantir?
guess which one am I

Elven roots -One built by Gil-Galad?
eye of men -And used by Elendil?
a path to past -A palantir that looked over the sea?
now blind again. -but has now been taken there?

My guess is Elostirion, the tallest of the Towers of Emyn Beriad.

Perfect reasoning for perfect answer; I have nothing to add except please carry on, Sophia.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-26-2003 01:46 PM

ok... here goes:

Tall I was once,
and home of The Tall
Small I am now,
No longer a home of battles
Only birds live here now
And the sad sigh of waters

yuck, no rhyme at all, I'm terrible at making these up.

Sophia

Annunfuiniel 04-26-2003 03:07 PM

It could be Himring, the hill where Maedhros' fortress stood (which obviously was tall, and Tall is also Maedhros' nickname). After the drowning of Beleriand it became considerably smaller in stature and was renamed Himling (an island where the "sigh of waters" is always present).

The Saucepan Man 04-26-2003 08:13 PM

OK, I'll go for Meneltarma which, being the Pillar of the Heavens and the tallest Mountain of Numenor (island of the tall Men), was certainly once tall. Following the Downfall, it too became considerably shorter.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-27-2003 12:41 AM

Himring/Himling it was! Maedhros the Tall was supposed to be the clue (and battles, I don't recall much battling on the Meneltarma), although, Saucepan Man, as always, your solution works nicely. Carry on Annunfuiniel

Thanks, Sophia!
Hmm, I don't seem to rhyme today so this next task will come out in prose for a change:
give the route through which the sweet galenas came to the Shire.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-29-2003 01:40 PM

Quote:

it was, I suspect, originally brought over Sea by the men of Westernesse. It grows abundantly in Gondor, and there is richer and larger than in the North, where it is never found wild, and flourishes only in warm sheltered places like Longbottom. The men of Gondor call it sweet galenas and esteem it only for the fragrance of its flowers. From that land it must have been carried up the Greenway during the long centuries between the coming of Elendil and our own days. But even the Dunedain of Gondor allow us this credit: Hobbits first put it into pipes. Not even the Wizards first thought of that before we did. Though one Wizard that I knew took up the art long ago, and became as skilful in it as in all other things that he put his mind to. (Prologue to LOTR)
Found it!

Sophia

Annunfuiniel 04-29-2003 02:57 PM

Well, well found, Sophia!
And thank you for that quote; I still don't hold an English copy of the books so at the moment I'm collecting all the quotes I can find from here... *copies and pastes*

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-30-2003 08:27 AM

What was the name of the river that ran through the valley where Feanor's house, Formenos, stood?

piosenniel 04-30-2003 09:29 AM

The River Híri.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-30-2003 11:54 AM

That wasn't the name I was looking for...

piosenniel 04-30-2003 04:05 PM

Let me try this:

Sirnúmen

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-02-2003 12:09 AM

That's it

piosenniel 05-02-2003 05:07 PM

A forest there was, that held the ancient tomb of Elendil: it's name, pray tell.

Estanesse 05-02-2003 05:58 PM

Firien Wood

piosenniel 05-02-2003 07:10 PM

Your turn! Carry on!

Estanesse 05-05-2003 02:37 PM

In the Land of the free
wide and far,
Big meets little,
Side on side
splendour and might hold with pride,

Behold a wonder some parts actually rhyme

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-05-2003 02:46 PM

Bree perhaps? where hobbits and big-folk lived together?

Estanesse 05-05-2003 02:48 PM

Nope, sorry

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-05-2003 11:27 PM

Alright, lets try again. This one much more thoroughly considered. The Gap of Maglor: it's a wide gap between Big and Little Gelion, defense of it keeps the free lands free, and the defenders are splendid and proud, being the Sons of Feanor.

Sophia

Estanesse 05-06-2003 02:59 AM

No that’s not it. but you are in the right continent

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-17-2003 07:46 PM

Ach! This is driving me Bonkers! Just a small hint?

Estanesse 05-18-2003 05:23 AM

In the Land of the free
wide and far,
Big meets little,
Side on side
splendour and might hold with pride,

Hint: there is only one big and there are more than one little

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-18-2003 02:27 PM

Amon Rudh where Turin met the Petty Dwarves?

Estanesse 05-18-2003 02:29 PM

No that's not it

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-19-2003 09:46 PM

Emyn Beriad- There are several towers, of which Elostirion is chief?

Estanesse 05-20-2003 11:31 PM

It seems to fit but it is not what I had in mind.
Hint: big is very big but not high

Lindolirian 05-27-2003 03:30 PM

River Gelion and its six tributaries in Ossiriand. It's big, but not high, there's only one big and many littles, and it's in a free land that is wide and far

Estanesse 05-29-2003 04:19 PM

Your right, it is a river but Gelion is not the right river, sorry.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-29-2003 06:35 PM

Sirion, then? It's the other very important river in Beleriand.

Estanesse 05-30-2003 04:18 AM

Sirion is the big but that is not the entire answer
I know it is lame of me, but could you please give the whole answer.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-30-2003 05:31 PM

I would guess that you means Sirion and Narog, where Nargothrond was holding splendid and pridefully...

But Mindeb, Esgalduin, Teiglin, and Aros all flow into Sirion.

Sophia

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-06-2003 02:01 AM

Estanesse?

Estanesse 06-06-2003 12:37 PM

Sorry for this late reply. Your right about Sirion and the other smaller rivers but Nargothrond is not correct still your close enough
The whole answer I had in mind was:

In the Land of the free
wide and far,- Beleriand

Big meets little,- Sirion the great river, the little are Esgalduin, Teiglin, and Aros

Side on side
splendor and might hold with pride,- Doriath

please carry on Sophia,

Alright, after much delay, here is the next question:

The inland sea,
The reaching arm,
The Gates of Stone,
The Water-Town,
The Elfking's Halls,
The Water Dim,
The hills of Stone,
The Mountain Grim,
Atop the spine,
I am the head,
but followed down,
Where am I led?

Sophia

Estanesse 06-13-2003 06:36 PM

I'm not sure but is the answer Isengard

The inland sea, (Sea of Nurnen)
The reaching arm, (Barad Dûr)
The Gates of Stone,(morannon)
The Water-Town, (dale)
The Elfking's Halls,(the Elvenking’s halls)
The Water Dim,(forest river)
The hills of Stone,(Grey mountains?)
The Mountain Grim,(misty mountains)
Atop the spine,(Methedras)
I am the head,( Orthanc)
but followed down,
Where am I led? (Isengard?)

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-13-2003 07:03 PM

Not correct, Estanesse, but the right idea. What I want is the path of a journey, from the correct beginning, through the correct places to the correct ending. I think I just broke a record on the number of times one can use "correct" in a post correctly (ooh, bad joke).

Sophia

The Saucepan Man 07-06-2003 06:38 PM

Well, I think that we could all do with another little hint here, Sophia.

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-07-2003 02:38 AM

The Sea of Rhun (The inland sea)
The Gates of Argonath (The reaching arm)
Minas Tirith (The Gates of Stone)
Dale/Lake-town (The Water-Town)
Thranduil's caves in Mirkwood (The Elfking's Halls)
The Enchanted River (The Water Dim)
Misty Mountains OR The Carrack (The hills of Stone)
Mount Gundabad (The Mountain Grim)
Head of the 'spine' of the Hithaeglir (Atop the spine)
See above (I am the head)
Followed down the line of Mountains OR down into Eriador (but followed down)
Where am I led? = Rohan OR Eriador

Alternatively,

Caradhras/Fanuidhol the Grey Mountain (The Mountain Grim)
On top of the Mountains (Atop the spine)
On the peak of Cradhras/Fanuidhol -- Cloudy'head' mountain (I am the head)
Down the Redhorn pass/High pass (but followed down)
Where am I led? = Eriador/Rivendell

Hmm I would say that the first version is my best guess.
