Be gone for ever - ere the day

nor ever after shall be bond
of love twixt yours and Nargothrond.

correct!

Good work, Macalaure! (You're getting better and better at this.)

Macalaure 11-26-2006 04:10 AM

I'm always quick to solve them if there's a "Son of Feanor" in it. ;)

On we go:

Guinevere 11-30-2006 03:14 AM

Hm, this is hard going, since it's something I haven't read...
I can guess the first 11 words, but then....? And who might ----o the accursed be, if not Uldor?
(The second sentence seems to be about Thorondor, but I guess his name is not quite the same in Lost Tales?)

T please

(it's really fun to see along what tracks your thoughts are going :) )

Guinevere 11-30-2006 04:22 AM

How about M then ?

Macalaure 11-30-2006 04:25 AM

good choice

:D that's a good one! (I only noticed now)

Hm, is "Thornhoth" perhaps the plural of eagle (similar to Gaurhoth) ?

I'd like to see the L's to confirm some of my assumptions

Macalaure 11-30-2006 04:01 PM

ACDHLMNORSTU

... and/ -h-/ do/ th-/ sons/ o-/ th-/ No-dol-/ cr-/ out/ -n/ th-/ lo-/ -lac-s

Ar-s-/ O/ Thornhoth/, -hos-/ --a-s/ ar-/ o-/ st--l/ and/ -hos-/ talons/ s-ords!"

Guinevere 12-01-2006 03:58 AM

OK, I think I can now figure out the rest:
Quote:

...and why do the sons of the Noldoli cry out in the low places for fear of the children of Melko the accursed? Arise, o Thornhoth, whose beaks are of steel and whose talons swords!
You didn't answer my question about the plural, but only then "beaks" makes sense, and I can't see any other word there that would fit.
But I still don't know who says this and in what situation ...

Macalaure 12-01-2006 03:09 PM

That is correct! :)

It is said by Thor(o)ndor, during the Fall of Gondolin. When the escaping Gondolindrim under Glorfindel went through the Eagles' Cleft they were espied by orcs (before the Balrog came). The Eagles came to their help against these orcs.

Guinevere 12-02-2006 10:08 AM

Thank you, Macalaure! :)
(So the orcs are considered as the children of Melko - or is that only Thorondor's idea?)

Here's another quote:

"---/ --/ --/ -----/ ------/ ---/ ----/, ---/ ---/ ----/ --/ ---/ ----/? ----/ ---/. ----/ ---/ ---/ --/ --/ --------/. ---/ --/ ----/ ------/ ------/ ----/."

Macalaure 12-03-2006 09:56 AM

I guess Tolkien hadn't thought about that matter yet at the time.

Let's have some T, for the start.

Guinevere 12-03-2006 11:10 AM

only herbal tea, since it's already 6 o'clock ;)

"---/ --/ --/ t----/, -----t/ ---/ t---/, ---/ t--/ ----/ --/ ---/ ----/? T---/ ---/. T---/ ---/ --t/ t-/ --/ --------/. --t/ t-/ ----/ ------/ ------/ ----/."
