Lord Elessar 03-05-2003 06:42 PM

I too think it is Fangorn Forrest because the ents look after it and Saruman tried to destroy it and cut down all the trees for his industry

gralin musicteeth 03-05-2003 06:59 PM

Not a very decisive question, probably something I would ask.

Beren87 03-05-2003 07:01 PM

True, narrowing it down would be nice

The Saucepan Man 03-05-2003 08:31 PM

How about the Old Forest, with Tom Bombadil and Goldberry representing love and Old Man Willow representing hate?

Annunfuiniel 03-06-2003 12:22 AM

All the forests are soon guessed so someone ought to get it right! But how about Nan Elmoth? Those feelings weren't really directed to the forest itself but were born inside of it: the great love of Melian and Thingol but later the hatred of Eöl the Dark Elf.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 03-06-2003 04:18 PM

Well...how about the forest that Sam and Frodo were in when they were captured by Faramir? Sorry, I'm not sure if it is Ithilien or not. But, it could be Faramir and his rangers representing love for the forest and valley and then the Orcs and evil creatures around it representing hate.

Pallando B.C 03-06-2003 07:25 PM

Yeah, I probably should have narrowed it down a bit more. It was Nan Elmoth becuase of the love (Elwë and Melian) and Hate (Eöl).

Can there be a Tie-Breaker?

10) How is Elrond related to Túrin? In two steps

alaklondewen ->4
Horse-Maiden of the Shire ->1
Tar-Palantir ->1
Annunfuiniel ->3

alaklondewen 03-06-2003 09:35 PM

I don't know if you want one or two people in the middle, so here goes nothing.

Elrond -- Huor -- Turin

or

Elrond -- Huor -- Hurin -- Turin

Tar-Palantir 03-06-2003 09:41 PM

Túrin - Tuor - Eärendil - Elrond

Is that 3 steps or two?

Annunfuiniel 03-07-2003 02:33 AM

Túrin -- Galdor -- Elrond

Well, at least I tried...

Pallando B.C 03-07-2003 06:32 PM

I'll give it to Tar-Palantir since he was on the righ track. If you left out Eärendil, it would be more correct.

Final Score:

alaklondewen ->4
Horse-Maiden of the Shire ->1
Tar-Palantir ->2
Annunfuiniel ->3

Which Means alakondewen is the winner. Please proceed.

3) What is the name of the first month after the 'yule' in Bree?

Score:
Annunfuiniel-1
Horse-Maiden of the Shire-1

[ March 09, 2003: Message edited by: alaklondewen ]

Annunfuiniel 03-09-2003 11:42 PM

That would be Afteryule, I believe that they used Shire calendar in Bree also.

[ March 10, 2003: Message edited by: Annunfuiniel ]

alaklondewen 03-10-2003 07:28 AM

Actually, Bree did have a different name for it.

Annunfuiniel 03-10-2003 08:06 AM

Would it happen to be Narvinyë then?

Eruanna 03-10-2003 09:32 AM

I think that in Bree the name was Frery (I hope it's ok to leap in here....I'm a newbie)

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 03-10-2003 04:49 PM

Off-topic, but welcome to the Barrow-Downs, Eruanna!

alaklondewen 03-11-2003 03:08 PM

Yes, well done, Eruanna, and welcome to the Downs!

4) What family kept the Red Book after the passing of Sam Gamgee from the Grey Havens?

Score:
Annunfuiniel-1
Horse-Maiden of the Shire-1
Eruanna-1

Annunfuiniel 03-11-2003 03:20 PM

The Fairbairn family?

Eruanna 03-11-2003 03:21 PM

When Samwise went to the Grey Havens he gave the book to his daughter Elanor and afterwards it was kept by the Fairbairns (of the Tower) who made several copies. (thanks for the welcome....this is a very interesting game....It's made me dig out my very ancient copies of the books)

alaklondewen 03-12-2003 08:12 AM

You are both correct, but Annunfuiniel was first.

5) Who was the Door Warden at Meduseld?

Score:
Annunfuiniel-2
Horse-Maiden of the Shire-1
Eruanna-1

Annunfuiniel 03-12-2003 08:15 AM

Háma. Was I first again, was I??

alaklondewen 03-13-2003 08:02 AM

Yes, well done.

6) What is the name of the pass in the White Mountains between Morthond Vale and Lamedon?

Score:
Annunfuiniel-3
Horse-Maiden of the Shire-1

Annunfuiniel 03-13-2003 08:30 AM

Paths of the Dead.

alaklondewen 03-13-2003 10:48 PM

Nope, this is in the south.

Eruanna 03-14-2003 03:53 PM

Would that be Tarlang's Neck?

alaklondewen 03-15-2003 09:36 PM

Yes, Eruanna , you got it.

7) Who was the only female Dwarf mentioned? What was her name, and how is she related in Tolkien's works?

Score:
Annunfuiniel-3
Horse-Maiden of the Shire-1
Eruanna-2

Gil-Galad 03-15-2003 10:23 PM

Diris i belvie and she went too Ered Luin with her people

alaklondewen 03-16-2003 12:36 PM

Sorry, no.

gilraën 03-16-2003 01:38 PM

Dis, mother of Fili and Kiri, sister of Thrain?

alaklondewen 03-16-2003 03:47 PM

Yes, Dis is right, but she was Thorin's sister not Thrain's. Which leads me to my next question...

8) Why was Thorin Oakenshield called 'Oakenshield'?

Score:
Annunfuiniel-3
Horse-Maiden of the Shire-1
Eruanna-2
gilraën-1

Eruanna 03-16-2003 03:56 PM

At the Battle of Azanulbizar, Thorin's shield was broken so he chopped off a branch from an oak tree to use instead. Hence the name Thorin Oakenshield.

gilraën 03-16-2003 05:25 PM

Quote:

Yes, Dis is right, but she was Thorin's sister not Thrain's.
Thanks, I wasn't sure I had remembered it right, obviously not.

alaklondewen 03-16-2003 05:57 PM

You are quite welcome, gilraën. Eruanna is correct and gets another point.

9) Who is known for always having an umbrella handy?

Score:

Score:
Annunfuiniel-3

Hmm...we may need a tie-breaker.
