O! See the waters break upon the prow,
Their shimmering mists leap up to limn the trees,
That mast-like stand behind its rocky bow -
No sails to move the ship to salty seas.

And let the fires burn at Amon Dīn,
Should shadow breach the way and enter in.

Let's take the riddle apart a little:

O! See the waters break upon the prow,
Their shimmering mists leap up to limn the trees,
That mast-like stand behind its rocky bow -
No sails to move the ship to salty seas.

These lines give the definite image of a land structure shaped like a ship. The waters break against the front (prow) of the ship - their mists rising up to the trees that stand along the top of this land structure like masts. The last line of this stanza indicates it is not found in the sea.

So, we have something shaped like a ship, in fresh water (obviously a river, since the waters break against the front of it.)

Now the final clue:

And let the fires burn at Amon Dīn,
Should shadow breach the way and enter in.

Amon Dīn is the first watchtower north of Minas Anor(Tirith), used to alert Gondor to an invasion of the enemy from the north or east. This geographic structure must be near there and must be important as a defense against invasion across the river from the north and east.

So, we've got an important land mass in a river north of Minas Anor that is shaped like a ship and would be a place that Gondor would want to make sure enemies did not capture and then enter into Gondor.

Quote:

In 455 (First Age), at the Dagor Bragollach, Finrod Felagund found himself cut off ... with a small host. He seemed lost, but was rescued with great loss by Barahir and escaped back to Nargothrond.
Quote is from the Encyclopedia of Arda, simply because it's convenient...

Question: where does this rescue take place? What two rivers come together there?

alquadae 04-08-2003 06:44 PM

Fen of Serech

Oops! That'll be me, then. Sorry.

Scramble along the Ered Tatagoras from Drenville towards Tol Mindh for 110 miles.

Where are you?

Annunfuiniel 04-15-2003 02:51 PM

And what a scramble that is! Ok, if you stroll from Rivendell along the Great East Road towards Mithlond for 110 miles you should get somewhere near the Last Bridge.
Oh, wish I was already there! Long road ahead...(see my From:!)

The Saucepan Man 04-15-2003 04:39 PM

Ah, Annunfuiniel, no cryptic clue gets past you.

Please proceed ...

Annunfuiniel 04-23-2003 01:53 PM

Annunfuiniel 04-25-2003 10:26 AM

And here I finally am: Home sweet home!
Ok, here's the next riddle:

A place of sight
a few there were like

Elven roots
eye of men
a path to past
now blind again.

Can you tell my brains are still on vacation?
