Rothinzil, another name for Earendil's ship Vingilot

The Perky Ent 09-07-2004 05:25 PM

Last King of the Second Line, aka Theoden, as he was the last king of teh second line :D

Gil-Galad 09-07-2004 05:29 PM

Ah better one

Elder King
Manwë Súlimo, first among the Valar

The Perky Ent 09-07-2004 05:40 PM

Grond, another name for the Hammer of the Underworld! I predict this category will take a while to burn out!

Yes, it's not really working is it, as the category (loosely interpreted, as it has been) basically allows people to name anything in Middle-earth which has more than one name ... which is practically everything in Middle-earth!

So, to prevent this category going on for another 10 pages, I'm going to have to get tough and exclude any name which is a principle name or a translation of a principal name (given that neither really counts as a nickname or an alias).

Which means that Grond is out, as it was, after all the weapon's name. Sorry Perky. :(

Actually, the same goes for Elder King and Last King of the Second Line, which are both titles rather than nicknames or aliases, but let's carry on with 'G' anyway.

Please folks, think whether your answer really is a nickname or an alias before posting. And if it's not, think of something else or don't post.

The Perky Ent 09-07-2004 06:12 PM

Right! How about Green-Elves, another name for the Laiquendi?

The Saucepan Man 09-07-2004 06:13 PM

Here's one

Grey, as in the nickname of Gandalf the Grey. :p

The Perky Ent 09-07-2004 06:14 PM

What about the Green-Elves?

The Saucepan Man 09-07-2004 06:15 PM

Darn, you beat me to it, Perky. :D

Yes, Green Elves falls squarely within the category.

Hmm ... Scattergold, as in Saradoc "Scattergold" Brandybuck.

The Perky Ent 09-07-2004 06:19 PM

Dwimordene, Rohan's name for Lorien!

The Saucepan Man 09-07-2004 06:28 PM

And therein lies the problem since, although Dwimordene is a nickname of sorts, meaning "haunted valley" it is the name commonly used in Rohan for the place. Which would let in a multitude of other words and thus promulgate the problem of the prolonged game.

Hmm, on consideration I think Dwimordene should stand. But no more titles, principal names or translations of principal names ...

The Saucepan Man 09-07-2004 06:33 PM

OK, how about Exiles, a name applied to the Noldor.

luthien-elvenprincess 09-11-2004 09:14 AM

Self-cursed, elvish nickname for man.
Hope this meets muster ;)

NightKnight 09-11-2004 09:25 AM

Deathless, a name given to Durin I.

Firefoot 09-11-2004 09:32 AM

Strawheads, the Dunlendish name for the Rohirrim.

Oh, yeah, congrats on 2,000 posts, NK!

NightKnight 09-11-2004 09:37 AM

Sorcerer - a title given to Sauron.

Thanks Firefoot. :)

The Saucepan Man 09-12-2004 12:14 PM

Wasn't that Necromancer?

Oh well, no matter.

River-woman, a poetic name for the river Withywindle, used by Tom Bombadil.

NightKnight 09-12-2004 01:17 PM

I think both were used...

Niniel.

Gil-Galad 09-12-2004 08:36 PM

Lindar, which are the Elven Idols of Teleri :smokin:

(if your confused, think American Idol, singers, Lindar meant singers, ta-da!)
