Annunfuiniel 03-15-2003 02:55 AM

Manardariel 03-15-2003 03:11 AM

Hint, perhaps?

Lyra Greenleaf 03-15-2003 07:03 AM

this sounds silly, but it's not the White Tree is it?

lathspell 03-15-2003 11:08 AM

Treebeard perhaps

Tar-Palantir 03-15-2003 02:54 PM

a hint perhaps?
A hint? I don't give no stinkin' hints! Besides, tons of clues in there.

Lathspell has it, it's Treebeard.

Welcome precious earth bound child, we met you first in your father's songs
- Earth bound = no Valinor to go to. Father's song = Eru's song

and mother's smile by mountains wild, it's in this place you now belong.
- Mother = Yavanna (growing things). Place you belong = Fangorn

Sadly you know of all these things and remember the gardens of years gone by
you know of all these things = knows the old tales, was around at the waking of elves and men and dwarves. Gardens gone by = Entwives.

for you were born under silver sky to taste the land and breeze on high.
silver sky = before the sun and moon, under the stars. taste the land = tree. breeze = tall tree

So sing one day to all of us, the songs you learned in lost days fair,
sing the song of lost days fair = Treebeards song of the list of peoples (I forget what it's called right now)

bring legend to life and words to trust, with wisdom, patience and strength, all shared.
This whole section referes to the war of the Ring and the help at Isengard and Helm's.

I live in the dark,
not one little spark
can lighten my home,
where light cannot grow.

Annunfuiniel 03-16-2003 08:48 AM

Is it *shudders* Shelob?
Oh, and it's ME again, lathspell!

Gil-Galad 03-16-2003 08:56 AM

yah Shelob or Ungoliant

lathspell 03-16-2003 03:27 PM

Yes, it's you again, Annunfuiniel ... though you're not right this time :P

Gil-galad has it (but what do you want: playing against an old wise Elven-king)

greetings once again,
lathspell

Gil-Galad 03-17-2003 04:51 PM

My people lived in ours halls for many years

Lyra Greenleaf 03-18-2003 06:58 AM

Was it the petty dwarves, or Mim?

lathspell 03-18-2003 09:21 AM

ahemm, ahemm... I would like to point out to the great Elven lord in our midst that I am not a mortal fool, maybe not that wise after all

Gil-Galad 03-18-2003 05:42 PM

yes lyra it was Mim teh Petty Dwarf who betrayed Turin to his death but Hurin slay Mim

Lyra Greenleaf 03-21-2003 12:38 PM

Befoer you read this I just want to say: I am NOT a poet! Also, it's very easy.

In splendour I lived, in glory I died,
Tilion-bright was once my guide.
In defiance I came, for honour and pride,
For mistrust I left, my victory denied.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 03-21-2003 12:43 PM

Hm...is it Fingolfin?

Gil-Galad 03-21-2003 05:02 PM

Fingon? or Finrod?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 03-21-2003 05:24 PM

or maybe its Finarfin?

Lyra Greenleaf 03-22-2003 06:36 AM

The Horse Maiden has it- Fingolfin it is. Guessed on the first go, I'm ashamed of myself!

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 03-24-2003 06:00 PM

Oh no! I'm horribly at these! Oh well, this is going to be terribly easy, I'm afraid. Or will it?...yeah, it probably will.

From scoundrel to soldier
From wild child to warrior
From vexing to valiant
Who am I?

Eruanna 03-24-2003 06:09 PM

Is it Merry?

The Saucepan Man 03-24-2003 08:17 PM

... or Pippin?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 03-24-2003 10:07 PM

The Saucepan Man has it!

The Saucepan Man 03-25-2003 06:56 PM

Thanks, Horse-Maiden.

The first Eldar
Lines up next to the King of Beasts
Carrying the head of Curufin

I am one of three
Two wait for the King
While I vanquish the Lord
But am myself vanquished.

Who am I?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 03-25-2003 08:21 PM

Glaurung?

Annunfuiniel 03-26-2003 04:16 AM

It must be Ecthelion of the Fountain!
"The first Eldar" part confuses me (does it mean I have to take the first letter 'E'?) but "King of beasts" >> -lion
and -C- is there as "the head of Curufin". So: 'E+C+ the lion'
Ecthelion of the Fountain was one of the three Ecthelions mentioned in Tolkien's writings, the other two were Ruling Stewards, fitting the line "Two wait for the King". And Ecthelion was the one who slew Gothmog, the Lord of balrogs but got mortally wounded and died too.

The Saucepan Man 03-26-2003 08:02 AM

Yet again, Annunfuiniel, you are correct. Well done.

The answer is Ecthelion of the Fountain for the very reasons that you stated (yes, the first of Eldar was supposed to mean 'E').

Next time, I'll have to make it more devious ...

In the meantime, you're up.

Gil-Galad 03-27-2003 07:54 AM

There was another way to get Ecthelion, becasue he killed Glaurnag and then he died right after so he was vanguished

Annunfuiniel 03-27-2003 08:59 AM

*bows* Thank you, Saucepan! But please don't make them any more difficult or I'll loose my sleep pondering them!!

I'm less than the first king
but you have to guess which one
if he loses the head of his land
I am all that is left

My inspiration came from heaven
of it two were born
and the other brought death to many
long after I was gone.

Manardariel 03-27-2003 10:00 AM

Are you Tuor?

Annunfuiniel 03-27-2003 10:07 AM

No, I'm not.

lathspell 03-27-2003 05:05 PM

Earendil??

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2003 07:50 PM

That'll be Eol.

Eorl was the first king of Rohan and, losing the first letter of Rohan, becomes Eol. Of the two great swords that he made, Anglachel certainly brought death to many, including two who wielded it, not to mention Glaurung.

Annunfuiniel 03-28-2003 12:57 AM

Bravo, Saucepan man, you are correct as usual. Uh oh, now you have the chance to bring forth the MOST devious of all your riddles! Well, I'm ready!

The Saucepan Man 03-29-2003 09:00 AM

Well, thank you. Devious, eh. Well, I'll try.

Many names was I called
This one by those
Under my command
Not one that I chose

But I'm too hasty
All in a muddle
This unlocks
To answer this puzzle

Annunfuiniel 03-29-2003 09:16 AM

Well isn't it the good o' Sharkey (aka Saruman which name he probably prefers)!

"But I'm too hasty
All in a muddle" >> mix up Shar- and you get rash.
"This unlocks" >> -key!

The Saucepan Man 03-29-2003 09:43 AM

Wow, that was quick, Annunfuiniel. So much for devious.

Your turn again ...

Annunfuiniel 04-02-2003 12:47 AM

Oh thank you, Saucepan, I liked that one!
But sorry to inform you that I can't spare any time for these forums at the moment so anyone who's interested can take my turn.

Gil-Galad 04-02-2003 05:21 PM

i guess i will

I fought aganest the betraying one, you know the man of skill, but i was defeated so i headed back to my old kings fortress in the deep and where with help of men, elves and dwarf we suceeded in winning the battle for our allies needed our help since they gave us the land we now stand on

~~OR~~
I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know
I want to be able as days go by
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
i don't want to stand, with the setting sun
And hate myself for things i have done.
I don't want to keep on a shelf
A lot of secrets about myself
And fool myself, as i come and go
into thinking nobody else will know
the kind of man i really am;
I don't want to dress myself up in sham.
i want to go out with my head erect
i want to deserve all man's respect
And here in the struggle for fame and wealth,
i want to be able to like myself
i don't want to look at myself and know,
that i am a bluffer, an empty show
i can never hide myself from me
i see what others may never see
i know what others may never know

who am I?
