lord of dor-lomin 01-23-2003 09:25 AM

If Luthien, Galadriel, and Earendil are getting close, I'm gonna guess one of their ancestors- Arwen.

the phantom 01-23-2003 09:28 AM

I had two guesses, but lord of dor-lomin just guessed one of them, so I'm down to one. You said that hope was kind of part of it, then how about Estel, aka Aragorn?

hobbit punk 01-23-2003 03:07 PM

Here's one: What is greater than heaven, more evil than hell, a poor man has it and a rich man needs it? This isn't too hard but I hope you enjoy!

Tigerlily Gamgee 01-24-2003 12:48 AM

As for a hint to mine...
It is not a character, but it is part of one. Think about a particular scene.

Manardariel 01-24-2003 03:58 AM

For Tigerlilly´s
The mirror of Galadriel (again?)
A silmaril?
Elven immortalness?????
just guessing...

edit: no, wait! The evenstar, from the movie? Or the Elessar?

[ January 24, 2003: Message edited by: Manardariel ]

Tigerlily Gamgee 01-24-2003 02:13 PM

Nope, nope , nope.

It is not an actual object, but it is what one sees in the other.

raci 01-24-2003 04:34 PM

*confused* Pity?

Manardariel 01-24-2003 04:40 PM

love, over all obstacles?
giving something up for someone you love?

Garen LiLorian 01-24-2003 10:46 PM

I'm guessing the chapter you're thinking about is Shelob's Lair, which might make the answer the light from the phial of Galadriel, or the light of Earendil. That's the only way I can make Galadriel and Earendil close to the answer, and the answer not be an object. If so, shame on you.

That's far too complicated for a riddle.

Tigerlily Gamgee 01-24-2003 11:05 PM

All riddles can't be easy...

And you are very close when you say the light of Earendil... you are thinking of the right two characters... but, breeze back up to the last clue I gave (just above your answer).
I guess this is one for those who have read the books many times, or those who love F&S, or those who just read carefully.

I didn't think it was that difficult.

Manardariel 01-25-2003 05:09 AM

light of Earendil...I keep thinking of hope... "our most beloved star"... um.... "light wenn all other lights go out"...help maybe?or something like that??

Garen LiLorian 01-25-2003 09:00 AM

I am determined to get this darn riddle. It's like an itch I can't scratch.
And, since some of us (read; me) are still stuck on dial-up, and it is frustrating to have to wait for the previous page to load, I thought I'd re-post the riddle, so I don't have to wait next time.

Glowing like a star so bright
Love and tenderness do I show
In the darkness of the night
I bring you memories of what you know
The light itself could fade very soon
But now is rest and forgotten is doom

My latest guess is the light that Gandalf and Sam see in Frodo. Something about
Quote:

He may become like a glass filled with light, for eyes to see that can.
and
Quote:

He's like that, and sometimes it shows through. But I love him, whether or no
Sorry if I got those quotes wrong. It's been a long day.

Tigerlily Gamgee 01-25-2003 12:44 PM

Quote:

*ding ding ding*
You are correct.

I figured it would be a little easier, but I guess not.
It is mainly the light that Sam sees in Frodo while he sleeps. Because in that scene it is said how he sees the face of his old master and he forgot about their danger for a short while.

Garen LiLorian 01-26-2003 05:26 AM

Woohoo!
Well. Now I've got to think of a riddle. Ummm... Off the top of my head;

My treachery leads to your great deeds,
I've broken your family, then protected you from harm.
Because of me you safely escaped, because of me you had to.
My protection lasts only tonight.

Who am I, and who am I talking to? Extra kudos if you can tell me when. (It is LotR related)

Manardariel 01-26-2003 04:02 PM

Grima Wormtounge?

Tigerlily Gamgee 01-27-2003 12:01 AM

I'm gonna guess Boromir, but since I am not totally agreeing with my answer I can't give you a when.

the phantom 01-27-2003 12:05 AM

Dang! Everyone keeps guessing mine! I was gonna say Boromir talking to Frodo at the breaking of the fellowship.

Garen LiLorian 01-27-2003 02:54 AM

Not Grima.
Hmm. Boromir almost works, but not quite.

I've broken your family is meant quite literally.

Think more abstractly. Phantom, you get one out of three, but I'm not going to tell you which.

Naurwen_of_Lothlorien 01-27-2003 07:29 AM

Is it the One Ring? It seems to work, but then I'm very tired. Hehehe.

the phantom 01-27-2003 10:06 AM

Here's my two guesses.

1)The ring talking to Frodo.

2)Saruman talking to Frodo.

[ January 27, 2003: Message edited by: the phantom ]

LePetitChoux 01-27-2003 03:32 PM

I'd have to say the Ring too.

Garen LiLorian 01-28-2003 01:12 AM

nope, nope and nope. The 'talking to Frodo' is right. Again, think more abstract, and everything is meant to be taken quite literally, including "my protection lasts only tonight" which is where the Ring as an answer breaks down.

Lady_Báin 01-28-2003 04:20 AM

garen hmmmmmmm maybe gollum or a nightmare hmmm that "i broke your family" is a toughy hmmm i can tell these are wrong.um faramir. is it a person?

Hobbit Punk the answer to yours is "nothing" am i right?

the phantom 01-28-2003 09:04 AM

The thing about breaking the family is kind of throwing me. How did Frodo's parents die? Were they the ones that died on the Brandywine? If so, I suppose I'd guess the Brandywine talking to Frodo (it also helped Frodo escape from the ringwraiths, protecting him from harm) but I'm not sure if it fits "because of me you had to" part.

If not that, how 'bout Bilbo to Frodo?

lord of dor-lomin 01-28-2003 09:12 AM

Boy, it seems like we're really getting out there. I guess I'll throw in a guess or two, and at least narrow the possibilities.

Gandalf to Frodo?
Tom to Frodo?
or perhaps Frodo to Frodo?
or Elrond to Frodo?
or maybe Galadriel to Frodo?

that ought to trim the list!!

[ January 28, 2003: Message edited by: lord of dor-lomin ]

Garen LiLorian 01-29-2003 03:16 AM

Phantom, you are the winner! The Brandywine river (or, of course, the Baranduin) speaking to Frodo.

The "because of me you had to" is pretty vague, I agree. But my thinking was that it was because of the river that Frodo was adopted by Bilbo, who gave Frodo the Ring, which made him have to escape. Congrats on figuring that out.

the phantom 01-29-2003 10:38 AM

Well, I guess I have to think of one now. Hmmm...I'm afraid this is rather easy, but oh well, I'll think of a better one next time.

Quick to pity, great in strength, among the mightiest in war,
Scarred by sorrow, barred by fate, marred by the curse I wore.

Manardariel 01-29-2003 10:52 AM

Túrin Turambar, Son of Hurin and Morwen?

the phantom 01-29-2003 01:01 PM

I'm disappointed. It took you an entire fourteen minutes to get that one! (ha ha)
Your turn Manardariel!!

Manardariel 01-29-2003 04:50 PM

14 minutes? The shame, the shame...... NM. Here´s mine:

Little things
becoming big
in a land
that was healed

little things
one of them gets fair
the only one
to find anywhere

Nuranar 01-29-2003 08:59 PM

Hobbits?

Little things, healing the Shire after the Scouring. Elanor the Fair, daughter of Samwise Gamgee, looked like an elf-maid and was one of the few hobbits (at her birth) to have golden hair.

the phantom 01-30-2003 10:08 AM

If not what Nuranar said, how about seeds? Little things that become big, right, and I'm assuming it means after the scouring of the Shire. And that would make the fair one the mallorn tree.

The phantom, well done!

the phantom 02-01-2003 11:05 AM

Thank you Manardariel.

Well, let's see if this one is slightly harder than my last one...

At my birth, hearts were high,
Banners were flowing in the sky,
At my end, lives were cost,
Tears were flowing and hope was lost.

[ February 01, 2003: Message edited by: the phantom ]

lord of dor-lomin 02-02-2003 02:15 PM

Umm... how about Feanor? Or Fingolfin maybe?

bombur 02-02-2003 03:48 PM

"At my birth, hearts were high,
Banners were flowing in the sky,
At my end, lives were cost,
Tears were flowing and hope was lost."

I think that is war.

Kind of the same as a finnish poem about our civil war three generations ago. Rough translation (as I think it went) would be something like:

"In a great square, in front of his troop
Long live liberty, shouted a man.

By his ditch, behind the woods
eyes covered by dirty rag or linen
Long live liberty, shouted a man.

Under the banners, with great dedication
Ended his speech, long live liberty, another man"

Definitely on the right track, Bombur, and I suppose it fits. However, I'm not looking for an answer that broad and general.

Lady_Báin 02-03-2003 06:44 AM

the atomic bomb

the phantom 02-03-2003 09:54 AM

Once again, the correct general idea, but I'm looking for something specific (LOTR related, of course).
