Sapphire_Flame 03-24-2003 05:13 PM

That would be Gimli, talking to Merry and Pippin at the gates of Isengard.

Elanor 03-25-2003 01:02 AM

That's the one Sapphire.

Tinuviel the Nightingale 03-25-2003 04:34 AM

Um sorry if i am butting in but, is that Merry to Pippin just before Pippin looks into the Palantir?

Tinuviel the Nightingale 03-25-2003 04:35 AM

Hold on ... wrong room sorry

Sapphire_Flame 03-25-2003 03:50 PM

So I pick a quote now, right? Hm....

"You may well be putting your thinking cap on, if you've got one."

Good luck...

Dondagnirion 03-28-2003 10:33 AM

Is that Gandalf? It sounds like Gandalf.

Dondagnirion
"There is no spoon."
"No one ever suspects the butterfly!" - B. Simpson

Sapphire_Flame 03-28-2003 05:29 PM

Not by a long shot! Try again!

Narduewen 03-28-2003 11:12 PM

Sounds alot like Gandalf to me. I just can't seem to find it in the book. Let me keep looking.

Narduewen 03-28-2003 11:16 PM

Oops, I meant to say Sam.

Lostgaeriel 03-29-2003 01:41 AM

It's Gorbag to Shagrat from The Choices of Master Samwise.

Quote:

'Who cut the cords she'd put round him, Shagrat? Same one as cut the web. Didn't you see that? And who stuck a pin into Her Ladyship? Same one, I reckon. And where is he? Where is he, Shagrat?'

Shagrat made no reply.

'You may well put your thinking cap on, if you've got one. It's no laughing matter. No one, no one has ever stuck a pin in Shelob before, as you should know well enough. There's no grief in that; but think—there’s someone loose hereabouts as is more dangerous than any other damned rebel that ever walked since the bad old times, since the Great Siege. Something has slipped.’

Sapphire_Flame 03-29-2003 12:27 PM

You got it, Lostgaeriel! Mae carnen!

Your turn.

Lostgaeriel 03-29-2003 01:29 PM

I just love Gorbag's description of our Samwise as the greatest hero since the Last Alliance.

Sorry, my Elvish isn't very good, but what is 'Mae carnen!'? 'Well done!'? I thought 'Carnen' translated as 'Redwater' (the river flowing down from the Iron Hills to join the River Running).

OK. New quote.

Quote:

I read the signs aright

Firondoiel 03-29-2003 02:34 PM

Aragorn when they were tracking Merry and Pippin?

Lostgaeriel 03-29-2003 02:45 PM

No.

Arvedui III 03-30-2003 07:33 PM

um, maybe Frodo/Sam in Eymn Muil(can't spell, sorry)

Lostgaeriel 03-30-2003 10:55 PM

Sorry, Arvedui III, but you're colder than was Firondoiel. Firondoiel was almost correct.

The spirits and wights that haunt this barrow and know me, know that I'm very particular. I want the speaker's name, the person(s) spoken to, and the situation (place or time or chapter).

HINT: Open your copy of The Two Towers.

Narduewen 03-30-2003 11:00 PM

That quote is on the first page of TTT. Aragorn says it about Frodo at Amon Hen. I don't think he said it to anyone but himself.

Lostgaeriel 03-30-2003 11:04 PM

Yes! It's Aragorn the quintessential loner talking to himself.

I thought some might forget that The Departure of Boromir is in The Two Towers (unlike the movie).

Well done, Narduewen. Your turn.

Narduewen 03-30-2003 11:24 PM

Okay let me find one:

"That is not surprising, for it is an art hich we have not practised for more than a few generations."

Lostgaeriel 03-30-2003 11:27 PM

Ooh, that's easy. I know that one without looking it up. But I'll leave it to some one else - maybe a newcomer to the BD.

Sapphire_Flame 03-31-2003 11:44 AM

That would be Merry, speaking to Theoden at the gates of Isengard.

BTW, great job figuring out Lostgaeriel's quote, Narduewen! I couldn't for the life of me figure out who it was.

And, Lostgaeriel, "Mae carnen" does mean "Well done". It was in the Movie.

Narduewen 03-31-2003 02:20 PM

Right Sapphire Flame! Merry was talking about how Pipe weed came to be right before Gandalf stopped him, because he knew it go on for a long time. Your turn.

Sapphire_Flame 04-01-2003 01:36 PM

Okay, here's mine:

"They hate us, and they are glad; for our doom seems certain to them."

Good luck...

Beren87 04-01-2003 03:17 PM

The leader of the wildmen to Eomer?

Sapphire_Flame 04-01-2003 03:34 PM

Close, but no dice! Try again!

gilraën 04-01-2003 03:40 PM

Was it not Eomer about the Wildmen?

Sapphire_Flame 04-01-2003 04:06 PM

Very good, gilraen! Your turn!!!

gilraën 04-01-2003 04:33 PM

Quote:

"I should hate to lose mine"

Narduewen 04-01-2003 05:53 PM

Merry to Pippen sometime after Pippen dropped his leaf of Lorien.

gilraën 04-02-2003 12:44 AM

Yes, your go.

Narduewen 04-02-2003 08:32 PM

Okay, since all of my other quotes seemed to be really easy I will try to find somethiing a little harder.

"And set us a pretty riddle."

I hope this is a challenge, but I don't know, I flipped open a page and found a quote.

Dondagnirion 04-03-2003 10:51 AM

Was it Sam to Frodo when they were in the Emen Muil? (Not quite shure how to spell that, sorry =/)

Dondagnirion

Sapphire_Flame 04-03-2003 01:43 PM

That was Legolas, to Merry and Pippin as they told of their escape from the Uruk-hai. It was one of my favorite parts in the Books!

(BTW, Dondagnirion, it's Emyn Muil.)

That's correct Sapphire Flame. At least I stumped one person! Your turn now!

Sapphire_Flame 04-08-2003 10:32 AM

I don't know whether this is from Towers or not, but.....

"He who breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom."

Good luck...

Dondagnirion 04-08-2003 12:40 PM

That would be Gandalf to Saruman when they were arguing at the parley with Saruman after The Battle Of Helms Deep I think.

Dondagnirion

Lostgaeriel 04-08-2003 08:06 PM

No, no, no. That quote is NOT from The Two Towers - the Voice of Saruman; it's from The Fellowship of the Ring - The Council of Elrond. It is Gandalf quoting himself while reporting his conversation with the traitor Saruman.

By the way, the quote is not
"He who breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom."
but rather
'And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.'

Just me being nit-picky - again.

I think Sapphire_Flame ought to go back to the book and find us a quote from The Two Towers.

In either case I have got it first. =)

Dondagnirion

Sapphire_Flame 04-09-2003 12:43 PM

Sorry, my friend gave me that quote, and I didn't know where it was from.

Hang on, I'll go find a new one...

Uh, Dondagnirion ... how do you figure that?

I correctly identified the quote. And I say Sapphire_Flame should give us one from The Two Towers.
