Next topic....is "plants" too hard? If so, then by all means switch it.
A is for Athelas, the Elven word for Kingsfoil, a common garden weed. |
I don't think an abc of plant-names in M-E is possible, but we might try of course.
B is for Blossoms, not exactly a name of a plant (as far as I know), but is has something to do with plants. Well, it's all I could come up with. |
C for Culumalda, a red-golden leaf tree that grew in the field of Cormallen, in North Ithilien.
|
D is for The Dead Tree - The last White Tree of Gondor, which died at the same time as Belecthor II the twenty-first Ruling Steward; for lack of a seedling, the dead tree was left standing in the courts of Minas Tirith. It was finally replaced by Aragorn, who with the help of Gandalf found the last remaining seedling on the slopes of Mount Mindolluin.
The Dead Tree was laid to rest in the catacombs of Rath Dínen. |
E is for Elbereth
|
Actually, Blue Pixie, the theme is plants, and you have to say the definition. I'll pick up the E and say...
Enting, a term used for the certain ents who were viewed as young in the eyes of the more mature ones. The ents kinda count as plants, don't they? |
Firs, the trees of the north highlands.
|
G is for Galathilion - The White Tree made by Yavanna for the Elves of the city of Tirion. From it came Celeborn, the White Tree of Tol Eressëa, through which it became the ancestor of all the White Trees of Númenor and Middle-earth.
The Dead Tree mentioned above is a descendent of Galathilion. |
H is for Herblore of the Shire, an herbology book written by Meriadoc Brandybuck. In it, he mentions the origin of Pipeweed.
Absolutely Ents count as plants! They are, after all, trees |
Iris, a colourful and distinctive flower found growing in Ithilien.
|
Strawberries - Wild berries found by Bilbo in the upper Vales of Anduin, as he journeyed eastward on the Quest of Erebor.
|
Stephanos - we are giving according to the alphabet. J is next. I haven't thought of a name yet, but that may come soon.
greetings, lathspell |
J is for Juniper, a sweet smelling, though prickly, bush used as a hedge in the Shire.
|
Kingsfoil, the other name for the athelas plant.
Sorry for the repetition, but there aren't any other Middle-earth trees or plants beginning with K. |
Laurelin the Golden Tree of Valinor
|
Mallorn (plural Mellyrn), the famed golden-leaved trees of Lothlórien
|
N is for Nicotiana, of which Pipeweed is reputedly a variety.
I just love your picture, Lindolirian. I put it as my wallpaper Agent Elrond....but the best part is the runes which take the place of the Matrix symbols. It's just great. [ May 02, 2002: Message edited by: Susan Delgado ] |
Oiolairë, a sweet-scented tree that grew in Númenor.
|
P is for Pipe-weed.
The description speaks for itself. I can only say that the Fellowship had lack of it for a long time. |
There are no plants that begin with Q. Skip it.
|
I guess I'll provide the R.
R is for Rowans, mountainous trees that grew on the western end of Fangorn and near Isengard. |
S is for Strawberries, wild red berries Bilbo found in the upper Vales of Anduin. (Does anybody know if they are the same as the "Strawberries" we know?)
|
T must be Telperion, the white tree of Valinor
|
U is for uilos a small white flower also called alfirin and simbelmynë.
|
V is for Valinor's white tree.
If not he I skip V for W W is for Wheat, an important cereal crop, used especially to be milled into flour. It is recorded as growing tall and golden in the land of Valinor. |

Y is for yavannamire - "Jewel of Yavanna", a fragrant evergreen tree with scarlet fruit, brought to Numenore by the Eldar of Eressëa. [ May 03, 2002: Message edited by: Lindolirian ] |
Alright, the next abc will be about names of Men (no elves, dwarves or any other races, just men).
With the A I was doubting between Aragorn and Ar-pharazon so I'll just do them both. Aragorn: he was a member of the Fellowship and he leaded it too for some time. He was leader of the Dunedain and he became King of both Gondor and Arnor. Ar-pharazon: the ruler of the Numenorians who broke the Ban of the Valar, seduced by whispers of Sauron. |
B is for Beren, who came upon Luthien singing in the forest. He is the ultimate ancestor of all the Numenorean Kings, and the Great-Grandfather of Arwen, Queen of the reunited Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.
You know, Aragorn and Arwen were some species of cousin.... |
ummm we're on C....
C is for Camlost meaning empty handed, the name taken by Beren when he lost the Silmaril. |
D is for Dorlas, one of Túrin's companions when he went to attack Glaurung
