What is another name for the Seat of Amon Hen, and why was it called that?

Pallando B.C 04-06-2003 10:55 PM

The Seat of Seeing, but I can't find why it is called that.

Eruanna 04-07-2003 09:05 AM

I think Pallando is right, but I also found this:
Amon Hen was the Hill of the Eye, or Hill of Sight. Its partner, Amon Lhaw was the Hill of Hearing. Aragorn said (in FotR) that in the days of the Great Kings, high seats were placed there so that a watch could be kept all around.

Beren87 04-07-2003 01:44 PM

Eruanna basicly got it right. It was called that because you could see ffor miles around.

lathspell 04-10-2003 04:23 PM

Shouldn't Pallando get this?
After all you were asking for the Seat and not for the Hill.

greetings,
lathspell

lathspell 04-10-2003 04:24 PM

Sorry, missed the why-part of the question!

Well, anyway this thread has come to life

lathspell once more

Eruanna 04-10-2003 05:12 PM

I thought Pallando had it too.....I was just putting in my four pen'orth. (or is it two cents )

Beren87 04-11-2003 03:50 PM

No, Pallando didn't include why, and you did [more or less], so it is your turn Eruanna.

Eruanna 04-11-2003 05:06 PM

OK, thank you. Here's my question:

There were originally 7 Palantiri or Seeing Stones. The Master Stone was in Eressea in the Tower of Avallónë, where were the rest kept?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-11-2003 05:35 PM

Are you looking for their locations in M-E? or are you looking for where they were in Aman before they were given to the Numenoreans?

In M-E they were located at Elostirion in Emyn Beriad, Annuminas, Amon Sul, Orthanc, Minas Anor, Minas Ithil, and Osgiliath.

In Aman... *shrugs* I've not been able to find anything... I think if those locations are listed it must be in some part of the "sacred writings" that I don't have a copy of

-Sophia

Eruanna 04-11-2003 05:47 PM

Oh no, I meant in M.E. I have no idea about Aman either.

Well done (as usual )

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-11-2003 07:06 PM

What is Athrad Angren?

piosenniel 04-12-2003 03:38 AM

Singular form of Ethraid Engrin (Fords of the Isen), Sindarin

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-12-2003 01:45 PM

Exactly.

piosenniel 04-12-2003 01:52 PM

This special arrow belonged to Beleg.

What was its name?

And why was it special?

gilraën 04-12-2003 01:55 PM

Dailir, it never failed to be found, unharmed.

piosenniel 04-12-2003 02:17 PM

Correct! Carry on!

gilraën 04-12-2003 02:48 PM

What was Gorlim's 'shame' and why?

Eruanna 04-13-2003 08:17 AM

Gorlim's *shame* was that he betrayed his friend Barahir and his *gang* to the forces of Morgoth. Captured and tortured he would not give them up, until he was made to believe that his (in fact dead) wife would be restored to him if he told the whereabouts of their hiding place in Dorthonion. After the bargain was made Sauron revealed that what Gorlim had believed to be his wife, was actually a phantom, created by evil magic. Barahir and the rest were found and killed (the Orcs holding onto his hand bearing his ring, later recovered by Beren, his son) and Gorlim was "cruelly put to death" as his *reward* for his treachery........Will that do?

gilraën 04-13-2003 08:47 AM

Excellant and comprehensive answer.

Your go.

Eruanna 04-13-2003 02:34 PM

Thanks.....I didn't know quite when to stop!

Here's a new question: What were the names of the Lamps of the Valar and by whom were they made?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-13-2003 02:59 PM

The lamps were Ormal and Iluin, and they were set up by Aule on pillars in the north and south of Almaren.

Sophia

Eruanna 04-13-2003 06:03 PM

Correct!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-13-2003 06:54 PM

What was the name of the river that partially formed Thingol's halls of Menegroth?

The Saucepan Man 04-13-2003 06:56 PM

Was it the Esgalduin?

[ April 13, 2003: Message edited by: The Saucepan Man ]

Eruanna 04-13-2003 06:57 PM

That would be the River Esgalduin.

It's a conspiracy!

[ April 13, 2003: Message edited by: Eruanna ]

The Saucepan Man 04-13-2003 07:04 PM

Hmm, that looks like I may have edited it to give the correct answer first. Honest, I didn't.

Eruanna 04-13-2003 07:09 PM

I didn't mean anything like that. I had just been pipped at the post on another thread too!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-13-2003 08:02 PM

*laughs at Eruanna and Saucepan Man's battle* Technically, The Saucepan Man had it first, but if you two want to fight it out...

Sophia

Eruanna 04-14-2003 12:52 PM

No, first one gets it

The Saucepan Man 04-14-2003 04:38 PM

Thank you, Eruanna.

How did Bilbo refer to the Undying Lands in There and Back Again?

[ April 14, 2003: Message edited by: The Saucepan Man ]

Eruanna 04-18-2003 12:53 PM

I don't have my copy of "The Hobbit" to hand, but I seem to remember Bilbo called it Faerie or something like that.

The Saucepan Man 04-22-2003 08:55 PM

It is indeed Faerie, Eruanna. The floor is yours.

Eruanna 04-23-2003 12:42 PM

Okey-dokey

What was Mereth Aderthad?

Lindolirian 04-23-2003 03:59 PM

It was a large feast in which all the leaders of the Elves in Beleriand (minus Thingol) got together and ate order out pizza (I mean good food) and discussed the future.

Eruanna 04-23-2003 04:26 PM

Yep...it means The Feast of Reuniting.

You're up.

Lindolirian 04-23-2003 04:32 PM

What marriage took place on a famous island right before an attack? Hint: the island is not Numenor.

Bonus, name the island and what attacked what.

lathspell 04-24-2003 12:07 PM

A guess: The isand was Aman, and it was the marriage of Finarfin and his wife (forgot her name and I don't have the books).
The Battle was the Kinslaying at Alqualonde.

Lindolirian 04-24-2003 03:07 PM

Nope. I wouldn't really consider Aman to be an island, rather a large continent. Also, I didn't say battle, but attack...

Beren87 04-24-2003 10:44 PM

Was it the marriage of Dior Eluchil to Nimloth upon the island of Tol Galen [where Dior's parents, Beren and Luthein, lived], right before the Dwarves of Nogrod attempted to assail the same island? [they were, of course, defeated bv Beren and co.]
