surprised, doubtful (they took a great deal of convincing), unfriendly (they had wanted to live in his hole), generally rude about the whole affair

I was looking for something slightly more specific

Lindolirian 10-27-2002 08:43 PM

They were in a mood for stealing silver spoons.... hehehe

Childlike Empress 10-27-2002 08:45 PM

That too , but not what I'm looking for...

TolkienGurl 10-27-2002 08:46 PM

Quote:

In short Bilbo was "Presumed Dead", and not everybody that said so was sorry to find the presumption wrong.

Quote:

On their side they never admitted that the returned Baggins was genuine, and they were not on friendly terms with Bilbo ever after.
This last quote referring to the Sackville-Bagginses, of course.

Which of the Dwarves insisted hearing the Gollum story all over again after Bilbo had explained it once?

Childlike Empress 10-27-2002 08:55 PM

Balin!

Childlike Empress 10-27-2002 09:04 PM

Why did Bilbo lie to the Dwarves about the Ring in the first place?

LadyElbereth 10-28-2002 08:45 AM

Bilbo decided not to tell them about the ring because they (the dwarves)praised him for his skill and they finally had no doubt that he was a first-class burglar.

TolkienGurl 10-28-2002 09:13 AM

Yeah, he didn't want them to know that he had "outside help." Bilbo wanted the Dwarves to think that it was his skill and intuitiveness that did it. GOOD IDEA LadyElbereth!

Susan Delgado 10-28-2002 08:40 PM

Close enough I guess Lady Elbereth can go now

LadyElbereth 10-28-2002 08:43 PM

o ok.
err..I don't know if this question has been asked or not.

What are moon-letters?

Susan Delgado 10-28-2002 11:12 PM

Letters which only appear when the light of the full moon shines on them. There were some on Thorin's map; they told where and how the side-door could be found.

LadyElbereth 10-29-2002 08:45 AM

Correct! your go

TolkienGurl 11-02-2002 02:42 PM

Well, since no one has posted, and today's day 5, I'm gonna go.

What is a polite thing to say among Eagles?

LadyElbereth 11-03-2002 08:54 AM

Farewell! wherever you fare, till your eyeries recieve you at the journey's end.

hobbitlass 11-03-2002 08:59 AM

Thank you, LadyElbereth. May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks.

LadyElbereth 11-03-2002 09:16 PM

Thankyou!

What did Bilbo wish for over and over again?

hobbitlass 11-05-2002 07:15 AM

Always to be back home, by the fire, eating something. Not for the last time.

LadyElbereth 11-05-2002 07:59 AM

Correct! Your go.

hobbitlass 11-05-2002 09:14 PM

What is "insulting to anybody"?

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-09-2002 09:54 PM

Tomnoddy, what Bilbo said to the giant spiders.

More than a year since my last Tolkien reading spell... and just about since my last post here, I believe.

hobbitlass 11-09-2002 10:19 PM

Well done. And welcome back.
Your turn.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-10-2002 03:30 AM

Thanks.

In what style did Dain's Dwarven soldiers wear their beards?

LadyElbereth 11-11-2002 07:06 PM

Their beards were forked and plaited and thrust into their belts.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-12-2002 03:37 AM

Correct of course, your turn.

LadyElbereth 11-12-2002 07:50 AM

What were the names of all three trolls?

TolkienGurl 11-12-2002 03:50 PM

Bert, William, and Tom

LadyElbereth 11-12-2002 07:13 PM

correct! Your go.

TolkienGurl 11-13-2002 11:32 AM

Ok, thanks!

This concerns the battle in The Hobbit.
*Which armies turned up for battle?
*Who were the chiefs of the armies?
*What was the outcome?

Answer all three correctly and you may proceed!

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-13-2002 04:18 PM

Wood-Elves: Thranduil
Lakemen: Bard
Eagles: Gwaihir
Orcs: Bolg
Dwarves: Dain/Thorin

Everyone onto the Goblins. The allies won.

TolkienGurl 11-13-2002 07:10 PM

You may proceed, Gwaihir.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-14-2002 12:21 AM

Thankyou.

When did Thorin attack a lakeman?

hobbitlass 11-17-2002 08:16 AM

When the banner-bearers and trumpeters returned to see if Thorin repented of his words. He did not and shot an arrow at the main speaker.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-18-2002 04:14 AM

correct

hobbitlass 11-19-2002 01:07 PM

Which would Bilbo have liked better?
A. a loaf and butter
B. meat toasted on sticks

Liriodendron 11-19-2002 01:27 PM

A loaf and butter, the eagles fare was not his fave!

hobbitlass 11-20-2002 03:45 PM

That's right and please pass some over here! Although I wouldn't say no to some steak on a stick. Your turn...

Liriodendron 11-20-2002 08:29 PM

Who greeted Bilbo with his hand on his breast?
