Nur, you got it, it's a dream. Well done, ask away.

Susan, is the answer to yours a match?

Belegfanaion 04-14-2002 10:13 PM

Here's one too, but it won't fool many of you:
Quote:

Read am I,
Thick is my skin,
What a good place to keep words in!
What am I?

Raefindel 04-14-2002 10:22 PM

The already-guessed riddle explained:

Time in a bottle, =an hourglass
the home of a king. =a sand castle
Sleep aide, =the sandman favorite
fun in a box. =sandbox

What am I?

Nuranar 04-14-2002 10:53 PM

Belegfanaion, is yours a book?

Thanks, Maril! I really need to think up a riddle of my own instead of guessing everyone elses...

Nuranar 04-15-2002 12:44 AM

Well, I came across this when I was reading tonight. This is NOT mine, and strictly speaking it's not a riddle, but some of you might be able to guess what the answer is...

"They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but they cannot see;
they have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but they cannot smell;
they have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but they cannot walk;
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them."

I will post the answer soon if no one guesses it, because it's really not mine and may be considered a trick because some of you might think it's similar to my "Shoes" riddle earlier...

Susan Delgado 04-15-2002 02:23 AM

That's right, Maril, a match

Amanruthiel 04-15-2002 05:26 AM

Nuranar

Is your's a Teddy bear?

Quote:

Read am I,

What am I?
Is it a dictionary?

A xx

Lady_Báin 04-15-2002 05:40 AM

This is probably way off but Nuranar is yours a statue?

Nuranar 04-15-2002 07:44 AM

No, it's not a teddy bear. In a manner of speaking it IS a statue; but in context...This really wasn't a fair riddle; I'll post the answer this evening (EST). Y'all are such good sports! My hat is off to you! *bows*

Bragolandune 04-15-2002 08:39 AM

Nuranar, is yours a shadow?

Susan Delgado 04-15-2002 02:43 PM

Nuranar, is it a religious idol?

Susan Delgado 04-15-2002 05:57 PM

Here's another that I wrote

I have two parts, a body and a hat,
Right now there is a third part, imagine that
I sit on fire hissing like a cat,
The third bubbles, the fire dies,
The hissing stops, and I am satisfied.

Bragolandune 04-15-2002 07:00 PM

wow, thats a hard one Susan. the only thing i can think of is a fire extinguisher, but that doesnt even sound right.. ill have to keep thinking about that.

Susan Delgado 04-15-2002 07:19 PM

No, that's not it, but good guess

Samwise 04-15-2002 07:21 PM

Susan, is it a tea kettle?
Quote:

He turned and saw that Sam was now standing beside him, looking round with a puzzled expresson, and rubbing his eyes as if he was not sure that he ws awake.
"It's sunlight and bright day, right enough." he said, I thought that Elves were all for moon and stars: but this is more elvish than I ever heard tell of. I feel as if I was inside a song, if you take my meaning. "

Samwise 04-15-2002 07:38 PM

Another simple one from Samwise:

I have a head, but no brain
generally, I have a smile on my face, but it dosen't necesarily mean that I'm happy.
I can have arms, but they are useless
With the rising of the sun, my life can end.
Quote:

"You don't need to tell me that!" said Sam. "I came without any, and I've been worried ever since. But I was wondering what these were made of, knowing a bit about rope-making: it's in the family as you might say. "

Kalimac 04-15-2002 08:36 PM

Nuranar, I was going to guess an idol but Susan beat me to it. How about a mummy?

Samwise, is yours a snowman?

How about this one? It's pretty basic.

Too much of me will kill
As will too little of me
In summer I am prayed for
But cursed if too oft I come.
What am I?

Samwise 04-15-2002 08:43 PM

Yes, Kalimac, it is.
Quote:

"I have indeed!" said Sam. "And I reckon there's Elves and there's Elves. They're all Elvish enough, but they're not all the same. Now these folk aren't wanderers or homeless, and seem a bit nearer to the likes of us: they seem to belong here, more even than Hobbits do in the Shire. Whether they've made the land, or the land's made them, it's hard to say, if you take my meaning."

Nuranar 04-15-2002 09:37 PM

Susan and Kalimac, you are both correct: It is an idol. Here is the quote in its entirety:

Quote:

Why do the nations say,
"Where is their God?"
Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever pleases him.
But their idols are silver and gold,
made by the hands of men.
They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but they cannot see;
they have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but they cannot smell;
they have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but they cannot walk;
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.
--Psalm 115:2-8 NIV
I'm so glad for the responses I got! I was afraid it was kind of a weird thing to post.

Kalimac, is yours rain?

Kalimac 04-15-2002 09:49 PM

You got it, Nuranar . Yours was really good [Kalimac smacks self on head] should have recognized that from the Psalms, eh? Actually the only Biblical phrase that came to mind on reading that was "Why do the Heathen rage?" but it was close enough, I guess. Susan, you're up for a riddle .

Belegfanaion 04-15-2002 09:49 PM

I believe that Kalimaks is is Rain or Water, Sarah's last one is a teakettle, and Nurambar is correct on mine, it's a book. (EZ One, eh?)

Kalimac 04-15-2002 09:50 PM

Susan Delgado 04-15-2002 10:24 PM

Sam and Beleg, you're half right. What is the teakettle doing?

Ok, here's one

What is dressed when night falls and undressed when day breaks?

Amanruthiel 04-16-2002 07:48 AM

Susan

Is you last one a bed?

A xx

Susan Delgado 04-16-2002 09:50 AM

Nope, that's not it.

Susan Delgado 04-16-2002 04:34 PM

Looking back over the list, I noticed two that were never answered (unless I just missed them ) I looked back through the thread, but couldn't find them to see if I had, in fact, missed the answers (I remember Stephanos and Samwise being the posters, respectively, but I could be wrong) Anyhoo, here they are. If they were answered, let me know, and if not, we have two more to guess (again) at if the posters are still watching this thread.

What goes through the door without pinching itself,
Sits on the stove without burning itself,
Sits on the table and is not ashamed
Quote:

Though precious it looks, a shiny stone,
It was not born in the earth.
It speaks all day, but no sound is heard,
And no matter how far it goes,
It will always end up in the same place.

Bragolandune 04-16-2002 04:39 PM

susan, i dont know about the second one but the answer to the first one was the sun.

Nuranar 04-16-2002 04:42 PM

Susan, I don't remember the first one, but the answer to the second is a goldfish.

Bragolandune, I think our memories compliment each other rather well!

Susan Delgado 04-16-2002 05:30 PM

Thank you both very much

Boiling over?
Quote:

Sam sat tapping the hilt of his sword as if he were counting on his fingers. "It's very strange," he murmured. "The moon's the same in the Shire and in Wilderland, or it ought to be. But either it's out of it's running or I'm all wrong in my reckoning. "

Susan Delgado 04-16-2002 08:45 PM

Exactly
One of my favorite quotes from The Hobbit

Samwise 04-16-2002 09:11 PM

Yay! LOL!!

(BTW, Sam, was the second riddle I asked about up there yours? the one where the answer is "a fish"? I'm just trying to confirm my memory)

I was going to post another, but then I looked in my book and realised I still have one out there...

The "Goldfish" one? No, that's Mr. Greenbow's.
Quote:

It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

Samwise 04-16-2002 09:38 PM

What is dressed night falls and undressed when day breaks?
---------------------------------------------
Mm...the sky?
Quote:

Sam eased the pack on his shoulders, and went over anxiously in his mind all the things which were stowed in it: his chief treasure, his cooking gear; and the little box of salt that he always carried and refilled when he could; woolen hose; linen; various small belongings of his master's that Frodo had forgotten and Sam had stowed to bring them all out in triumph when they were called for. He went through them all.

Samwise 04-16-2002 09:41 PM

Yet another from Samwise:
---------------------------------------------
I can be hot, or I can be cold
I can be held in the hand either way.
Sometimes liquid stays in me, sometimes it comes out.
What am I?
Quote:

"Bill, my lad, you ought'nt to have took up with us. You could have stayed here and et the best hay till the new grass comes. "

Oh. Well, I never said my memory is perfect.

The answer to mine is not the sky.

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 12:29 AM

Is it a coffee mug?

Samwise 04-17-2002 06:56 AM

LOL, Susan! Exactly! (Maybe you were thinking along the same lines I was last night....)
Not the sky, hm? Oy...it's too early in the morning to think....
Quote:

"But I'm beginning to think it's time we got sight of that Fiery Mountain, and saw the end of the Road, so to speak. I thought at first this here Redhorn, or whatever its name is, might be it, till Gimli spoke his peice. "
~Sam Gamgee

Lady_Báin 04-17-2002 10:02 AM
