Well, this looks to be a good game, especially since everyone seems so excited even before it starts! :D

I think I shall be a dockhand, some unsophisticated grunt worker who moves crates onto ships. Which means I'll be working for Master Saucepan. (I better have some good wages; I've got connections in the Union! ;) )

What's this about unions, young Gurthang my lad? Back in the days when I sailed on the tall ships from Numenor, we didn't have no truck with unions. Oh no. In those days, we knew that we would get an honest wage for an honest day's work. And I wouldn't have missed it for all the pipeweed in Eriador. The things we saw. Strange wondrous things. Oh yes, I could tell you such stories. Like the time that we were becalmed and heard strange siren voice calling from the mist. Harpies they were my lad. Harpies, I tell thee. Foul vultures, with the heads of old hags and the voices of angels. Voices like you have never heard. And if you heard them, my lad, then you'd be lost, just like we nearly were. Trying to draw us onto the rocks they were. The rocks, I tell thee. If it hadn't been for my quick thinking, binding the crew's ears with bandages an' all, we would all have been lost. Lost, I tell thee. Now they don't teach you that kind of thing in yon new-fangled unions, do they?

Unions! Tsk!

Young! Maybe I be only half your old age, but I've still have a good hunnard 'n thirty years in this harbour! More than you, with all your trapsin' across the sea! I'd have all your tales for my own if I'd ever had legs for the waves, but you can have 'em anyway! Tales of all this far off water and pipeweed! Tuh! pipeweed... who needs the foul tastin' stuff. You've plenty of ye own tales and rubbish, I'll give ya that, but I know more about this here harbour. In fact, I'd be your boss, if I weren't so good at heftin' crate. You may be my senior by a good margin, but I've been in this harbour longer then ye, and that's a fact!

The Saucepan Man 11-27-2005 09:41 PM

Note to mod

Gurthang is now an unemployed dockhand. :D

Aiwendil 11-27-2005 10:40 PM

I'm an old retired tutor for the children in wealthy families.

Yeah know, it may be a pretty long game if we do that kind of thing every post. I don't know if I could keep that up for more than a day. (Which is good, cause that's usually how long roleplaying lasts anyway!)

Boromir88 11-28-2005 05:55 AM

You two may be roleplayed out by the time this one actually starts.

Rune Son of Bjarne 11-28-2005 07:05 AM

What can I say, Gurthang and Saucepan have inspired me.

I will not be a religious leader, but a Union leader/boss or what they are called in english.

Mobster or tyrant is the normal

Fordim Hedgethistle 11-28-2005 08:19 AM

I shall be a lithesome Pearl Diver.

Holbytlass 11-28-2005 09:45 AM

I'll be the butcher.

Excellant. Rune, you and I need to go have a little chat with my employer, who is attempting to become my ex-employer. ;)

A Pearl Diver, eh? Now that takes me back to the days when we was sailing the seas far south, in the ocean that lies off Far Harad. The things that dwelt in those seas you wouldn't believe. Oysters as big as houses, there were. And the pearls! Larger than you could imagine they were. Dangerous they were to get hold of, mind you. Them oysters could take yer arm off. Happened to our second mate, it did. Took is arm right off it did. Took it off, I tell thee. I was more lucky mind. Managed to grab three of the beauties, I did. Three of them, I tell thee. Mind you, I lost them when we fell foul of them nasty Haradrim pirates some days later. Cast adrift we were. Those of us that they didn't toss to the sharks, that is. Tossed 'em to the sharks they did. And the size of them sharks! Well, you wouldn't believe it it you saw it. Cast adrift for eight weeks we were, with them bloomin' great sharks circling us every day. Eight days being circled by sharks the size of Oliphaunts, I tell thee. It was a wonder we survived. Many of us didn't, mind.

And you talk to me of Unions, young Gurthang me lad. We didn't have unions to help us grab them pearls or fight off them Haradrim pirates or ward off them flippin' great sharks. No, we didn't 'ave no unions in them days, I tell thee. Now get away with thee, and we'll have no more talk of Unions. Unions! Tsk. Them and their health and safety rules. There'll be no more diving for pearls if they have their way. We will be shipbuilding. With all the will in the world. Diving for dear life. When we could be diving for pearls.

Or maybe it's just a rumour that was spread around town.

Unions! Tsk! Whatever next?

Azaelia of Willowbottom 11-28-2005 03:34 PM

If space should suddenly by some miracle become available, I'd love to join in. If not, that's ok too, I can always wait for next time ;)

wilwarin538 11-28-2005 04:35 PM

I'll be the town fiddle player. Not sure if thats how you spell fiddle, I'm speeking of the stringed instrument. So would that be fiddler or fiddlelist or fidlist maybe? Also not sure of the proper title but that's what I'll be! :D

I need some sleep. ;)

Ah, the evocative sound of the lone fiddle. Puts me in mind of the time we was sailing ...

*The harbourmaster disappears under a hail of assorted lobster-pots, oars, lambs, oyster-shells, crabs, crates, fishing nets and union membership cards.*

TGWBS and Azaelia - and anyone else who wants to join a game - Sleepy Ranger is still recruiting for his game over on the Werewolf Junior thread.

Alcarillo 11-28-2005 09:39 PM

Great roles, everybody!

The Saucepan Man – harbormaster
Mormegil - repairman specializing in ships and docks.
Formendacil – disgruntled office clerk
Kath – bum
Dancing spawn of ungoliant
WaynetheGoblin - doctor
Rune Son of Bjarne – Union leader
Gurthang – (possibly unemployed) dockhand
Aiwendil – retired tutor
Folwren
Boromir88 – crab farmer
Wilwarin538 – fiddler
Lhunardawen – polite little shepherd girl
Holbytlass – butcher
Fordim Hedgethistle – pearl diver

Attention! If you have not yet chosen an occupation, I will make one up for you! And it'll be boring and unexciting! ;)

The game will start on 3 December, at midnight for those of you in England. So sorry to make some of you (like Rune) stay up so long into the wee hours of the morning, but that's the best time for me. The game will begin with a NIGHT phase, for the wolves to get to know one another and the seer to make a dream.

By the way, I shall be the local tax collector.

mormegil 11-28-2005 10:31 PM

Is that midnight EST?

Gurthang 11-28-2005 10:35 PM

So that would be...what exactly in my time? I'm guessing about 6:00 in the morning. But that's alright, I'll figure it out when the game starts, as I have every other time I've played. (BTW, I'm in Central Time, US, but I'm not sure what that exactly is compared to world time.)

Aiwendil 11-28-2005 11:18 PM

I believe EST is 5 hours behind GMT, so midnight in England should be 7 P.M. for those on the east U.S. coast and 6 P.M. central.

Gurthang 11-28-2005 11:32 PM

Oh, so I guessed right! Thank you very much Aiwendil.

Oh, and I be wonder'n' how big our harbour be? I been here long, tis true, but I've not been mindful of much but the crate that comes and goes. I can tell ya'll about any supplies, goods, and general freight, but not much else, except maybe the nature of hulls on various vessels. I'd wager Master Saucepan has my right answer for me, but I'd be pleased to not have another long winded tale asides his reply.

(Meaning, is our harbour bigger than a normal 15 villager town would have? It'd almost have to be, to have a Union leader person.)

Alcarillo 11-28-2005 11:35 PM

Aiwendil's got it!

So in America, the game will start at 4 PM on the West Coast to 7 PM on the East Coast, on the 3rd of December. In England the game will start at midnight. And in most of Europe the game will start at 1 AM on the 4th of December.

And Gurthang: It's just a tiny village, not a major port. The occasional deep-sea fisherman might stop by to patch up some leaks in his boat, but I see no reason why we'd need more than us 15 to populate our village.

Kath 11-29-2005 04:39 AM

If each Day is going to start as midnight then can we havesome sort of general rule that people from England won't be suspected on grounds of not being there for the first few hours. Those who live alone might be able to get on the computer at an ungodly hour but I can't!

Hear, hear! I'm not going to stay up till 2.00 am. just to try to appear innocent.

What happened to embarrassing? If it's not too late to choose an occupation, I'll be an embroider.

mormegil 11-29-2005 08:57 AM

You need not be the first to post or vote to appear innocent or not look guilty. We are all understanding of time zones and I don't think we are over concerned about it. Just stay as late as you can and participate actively and that's good enough for me :D Although I would stay up as late as I could to vote ;)

Oh, I wouldn't dream of doing anything else! Of course I'll suspect you! I'll just (probably) refrain from voting for you until you show up... that is unless I initiate the plan(insert creepy music)! ;) :D

Folwren 11-29-2005 11:20 AM

Ah shucks, people. . .I'm still torn as to whether I should play or not. I want to play. . .I really, really want to play, especially with Alcarillo modding, but I only have internet three days a week, and that is really bad while trying to play a WW game.

. . .

. . .

. . .

Okay, I've just decided that I'll play. Hopefully I'll be able to work my three days so that it'll be three days that are actually days in the game. Maybe. If it's possible.

I'll be a blacksmith and a farrier, both. I'll have a horse, and his name will be Nimrodel. He is grey with black mane and tail and stands no less than sixteen hands high at the whithers.

You all don't mind if I'm Jack in this game, do you? I played with that name in WWJ. It's something of a tradition with me, if you'll understand.

If anyone minds, then say so, but until then, in this game, I'm Jack.

-- Jack

Edit: Consequently (I'll bet that is mispelled), I won't be here the first day, seeing as it starts Dec. 3rd.

Thats a perfect time for me. The other games I have played in changed about 3-4 am and adicted as I was/am I stayed up not to miss anything.

Warning to Saucepan Man
: You better start treating your employees according to the collective agreement or you will have a strike on your hands.

Boromir88 11-29-2005 04:28 PM

Being a Crab Farmer, I'm sure I have invested in a boat from our local harbormaster, and my boat shall be my place of residence. :)

mormegil 11-29-2005 04:39 PM

I'm not really sure that this can be the subject of any hard and fast rule. As morm said, we just need to bear in mind that we live in different time zones - and also that RL committments can sometimes prevent us posting quite as frequently as we might like. One thing, though. Can everyone make sure to post their excuses for absence in this thread, rather than the game thread. The reason being that I regard anything said in the game thread as capable of being false (given the nature of the game), whereas everything posted here should be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Folwren, I will be delighted if you do play. But may I ask that you make absolutely sure that your schedule does not mean that you could go missing for days on end. Otherwise it could influence the game quite considerably, particuarly if you are a gifted or a werewolf. I don't want to dissuade you from playing, but I just want you to be sure that you will have time to participate sufficiently.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that we have a union boss in a village of only 16 people? I hope that young Gurthang hasn't been foolish enough to pay him a subscription or anything like that ... ;)

I was wondering that... I guess my union is basically me, although I'm surprised that you just attempted to fire your entire workforce. :p You'd be loading all those ships on your own! *stands there waiting for some long tail from Master Saucepan about loading crate on some far off shore.*

Lhunardawen 11-29-2005 11:58 PM

I'm a bit confused. Does the game start on December 3 or 4 midnight GMT?

And I think I'm a little lost. Now don't you all go picking on me because I'm just a polite little shepherd girl and you're all (well, most of you are) men of the sea.

Aiwendil, I haven't the pleasure of crossing your path (that I know of) so if you please, are you female or male? Thanks. And to be sure, Formendacil, you're male, right? Thanks.

The rest of you...let's just say I might know more than I care to! ;) :D

Aiwendil 11-30-2005 07:23 AM

I'm male.

I'm afraid I'm unsure of the sex of several people, but I'll try to catch on as the game proceeds. What I'd give for a decent neuter pronoun . . .

Holbytlass 11-30-2005 08:02 AM

Here's the females (everyone else is male)
Kath
Dancing spawn of ungoliant
Wilwarin538
Lhunardawen
Holbytlass

Jack is Folwren who is female but is the persona 'Jack' male?
