Most definitely. And dry, cold weather and firmly frozen ground, after November had turned our garden into something resembling a Vietnamese rice field - you could almost surf in the mud.

It's not stopped snowing here for over three days now. We have to go shovel every few hours or risk being isolated from the road system. Alaska has no real road maintenance program, so if you do manage to make it to the roads, there's no guarantee you'll stay on them for long. We've gotten over 86 inches of snow in some places. I like rain better.

Hakon 12-17-2009 09:15 PM

I love the snow and the rain. We already had one snow day here in New York. As of now we have lots of ice all over the place that is slowly melting.

Hakon 12-19-2009 12:14 AM

I assign the movie Avatar. I got to see it tonight at the Directors Guild Theater in NYC and it is amazing. Cameron did a great job. The script is excellent and the special effects are awesome.

Feanor of the Peredhil 12-20-2009 02:22 PM

Using all your letters at once in Scrabble. With a 'q.' On a double word score.

Hakon 12-20-2009 07:35 PM

What was the word?

Feanor of the Peredhil 12-20-2009 07:47 PM

Torques.

Boromir88 12-20-2009 07:59 PM

Nice. The best I''ve been able to accomplish was Zombies...for 54 pts.

Hakon 12-21-2009 12:31 AM

Best I have done was making up a word. I think it was quzia. No one realized I had not spelled quiz until later in the game at which point it was too late for me to change my word. I hate scramble, in fact I hate almost every board game. Well I don't hate chess and I only kind of hate monopoly but still.

How can anyone hate Risk?

Also, nice work Fea.

PS. *whispers* it's "Scrabble"

Hakon 12-21-2009 01:38 PM

Sorry I wrote that about 1 am on a school night and I have a sinus infection so I am very out of it but still my usual pessimistic self.

*snickers* I'm sorry, but that's just hilarious. :p

EDIT: xed with Hakon

You know you're addicted to the 'Downs when you're trying to work out how this has anything to do with Bêthberry.:p

TheGreatElvenWarrior 12-22-2009 05:30 PM

I assign firstly being able to assign things to the Shire for the first time in a long while.
And secondly, having the temperature being over freezing, so I didn't have to wear a jacket today!:D

No kidding. It's beautiful! I don't think it got this warm all last winter! *is happy* :D

It is wonderful! We went out shopping and such. Everyday since Saturday, it was bloody cold until today. We still went shopping, but I took off my ski jacket the first place that we went to because there was a warm breeze. It was amazing, and quite a surprise.

How do you survive in such cold weather!?

Hibernation, of course. Haven't you ever watched nature documentaries? Everything in Alaska hibernates, including the sun.

That's not cold. I don't think anyone from southcentral Alaska has ever been in the 'cold'. You'd have to go up to Fairbanks or some such place.

Oh yes, we totally hibernate in the wintertime.;) That is how we are on the internet in December.

Eönwë 12-22-2009 06:55 PM

I suppose you must just get used to the constant below-freezing temperatures in winter after a while.

...it's nicer in the summer. But yeah, you do get used to that. It's not so bad. The bad part is the six hours of sunlight in the winter.

Steve, it's constantly below freezing in New York as well. So the freezing point really isn't a good measure of Alaska.

I mean, tomorrow's high here is supposed to be -6 C, with snow. Today's high was around -7 C. And while it's cold, I don't consider it really cold until it hits -26 C.

I'm totally with them: if it had been above freezing, I'd have been wearing a light jacket.

Well, I meant that freezing point is a good measure of the UK. We are really quite a warm country considering our latitude.

I finally got The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún this Christmas! Yay! Though it costs over a thousand pesos, I used all my savings, plus five hundred from my brother, because I just couldn't let it pass. And I couldn't wait for the softcover edition, which was what I did with Children of Húrin.

Also, I found a copy of Ibsen's major plays and The Little Book of Matisse in a second-hand bookshop, for just less than fifty each! :D

Good for you! I have had my eye on that book for a while. You just can't beat Northern Mythology!

Mnemosyne 12-28-2009 10:52 AM

Pajamas fresh out of the dryer.

Inziladun 12-28-2009 02:48 PM

Home-made chocolate cake and a week off at home with my 5 year old.

Loslote 01-09-2010 06:11 PM

For once, sparcely inhabited towns. Since mine was the only school in my district to try the Poetry Out Loud competition, I get to skip regionals and go straight to state! :D

Thinlómien 01-12-2010 07:49 AM

Snow!

There's incredible lots of it here, on the roadsides you can find piles taller than me and all the tree branches are white all over. It's so beautiful!

And besides, they say you can go walk on the sea now, the ice is solid enough. Gotta try that as soon as I finish my first BD check in two weeks!

*loves proper Finnish winter*

Feanor of the Peredhil 01-12-2010 08:48 AM

Triage.

I love me my triage.

As I was saying to Nienna last night - it was either her or Boro... then again, maybe it was my brother or cousin? - if you aren't bleeding, none of your bones are broken, you're not running a dangerous fever, you can breathe, you're not in labor, and none of your organs are failing, then you can suck it up and wait a few hours.

Laurinquë 01-14-2010 05:56 AM

Being done with my paper telephone artwork! At last! :D It's only 2:56 in the morning.

Theoretically speaking, yes. For me, no. I am moving to the Lower 48 (or the UK!) as soon as I can. But really it's the darkness that hurts you the most, it gets inside your soul and eats you. Not fun.

Which is, of course, why this is in the Shire thread...;)

But yeah. It's only five thirty and already it's been pitch black for an hour. It gets so depressing, and winter's not even half over yet. :(

Winter is lovely, isn't it?

Tea, I assign tea to The Shire!

Loslote 01-18-2010 09:30 PM

I assign 409. It smells awful in large quantities, but it shortened the time spent on scraping the carmalized apple chunks off of a random guy's fridge shelf from days to hours. Plus, it doesn't react horrible with Comet, which ended up being a Good Thing.

Mithalwen 01-19-2010 11:47 AM

Being in one piece . Thanks to a small miracle or a lot of luck.

Working even for a little while somewhere I really love.

Feanor of the Peredhil 01-19-2010 09:28 PM

Thick squishy plush wool socks. Dogs that get visibly embarrassed when you manage to ninja your way into the house without them noticing. Having a job you like with coworkers that like you. Remembering why you were in love with someone, even if you don't love them any more. Sweet potatoes. Cheesy broccoli. Generous people.

Good days.

Nienna 01-19-2010 09:53 PM

Love letters.

TheGreatElvenWarrior 01-20-2010 08:15 PM

At a birthday party earlier today, I played about five rounds of RL Mafia. I narrated the first game. It was an epic fail, because I accidentally used the last Mafia's name in the Night Kill narration. It was also funny, because I am never evil! Twelve games (that I can remember) and I've never been evil. I'm sure it means something. :Merisu:
