Incanus? (not sure what it means )

Rochelle 03-26-2003 08:43 PM

Incánus meaning roughly "north-spy"

The Saucepan Man 03-26-2003 08:49 PM

Correct Rochelle. You are the first to get both name and meaning.

Incanus is said to have been the name given to Gandalf by the Haradrim, meaning "North-spy". But there is another explanation, too. Apparently, it is also said to mean "Mind-ruler" in Quenya.

Rochelle 03-26-2003 09:23 PM

Oh good Let's see here...

What was the name of the great ship built by Aldarion, also know as the Far-Wanderer?

anyone????

Beren87 04-07-2003 08:33 PM

That's the epithet [or title] of Idril, it means Silverfoot.

Faenaduial 04-07-2003 08:35 PM

Celebrindal means Silverfoot. She was Idril the daughter of Turgon and Elenwe. Married Tuor.

Faenaduial 04-07-2003 08:36 PM

Rats. Beren87 bet me to it. I need to type faster.

What about Eonwe, Tilion, Arien, and Ilmare? (and I don't suppose Sauron counts either, that's not his real name, though he was originally from Aule's people, wasn't he?)

[ April 08, 2003: Message edited by: Sophia the Thunder Mistress ]

Beren87 04-08-2003 05:20 AM

Sophia, I have to say something. I'm a great fool. I just saw she has the first couple and told her she was right, but she's not completely right.

It's Sophia's turn, sorry about that.

The 8 listed [named] Maiar: Ilmarë, Ossë, Eonwë, Uinen, Melian, Olorin, Arien and Tilion.

Now the Istari are not said [directly] to be Maiar, they only may be [but are presumed to be].

And Sauron was indeed one of the Maiar of Aulë, but his "Maiar name" is never given.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-08-2003 12:22 PM

Lol!ok, here goes a question...

What was Gabilgathol? (language, meaning, common name...)

Eruanna 04-08-2003 02:39 PM

Gabilgathol (Dwarvish) meaning Great Fortress also known as Belegost or Mickleburg. One of the strongholds of the Dwarves, in the Blue Mountains.

alaklondewen 04-11-2003 03:17 PM

Okay, I'm going to try this...

Sindarin/Gil - 'spark'; Estel - 'hope', so 'sparkling hope'?/My guess would be Aragorn.

Eruanna 04-11-2003 04:20 PM

[ April 11, 2003: Message edited by: elven maiden Earwen ]

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-11-2003 05:29 PM

Earrame (I'm too lazy to go get the accent marks) means Sea-Wing. It was the name of the ship in which Idril and Tuor went west.

-Sophia

Eruanna 04-11-2003 05:31 PM

It means Sea Wing and was the name of Tuor's ship, in which he and Idril Celebrindal sailed into the West.

Darn it....too slow!
Great minds think alike eh?
