Hooray! I wasn't actually too sure, Raefindel, just thought that was an answer that worked . Happy Easter to you and all others who may be reading this as well; I said as much to Samwise earlier but it occurred to me rather belatedly that I should spread the joy, so to speak.

Samwise - he did indeed read that chapter before bedtime, but if I remember correctly he did tell us ahead of time that there was a really scary part coming up and we could wait until tomorrow afternoon, which of course none of us were having for a second; we wanted too much to find out what happened next. It's true that it took me a while to sleep after that, though.

For a riddle...I can't really think of any good straight-up riddles right now. Here's one which is sort of a "Who Am I" riddle; read the poem and identify what figure (real or literary) it's about (or whose epitaph could have read like this). Best I can come up with for the moment, I'm afraid:

If he'd have a happy life
Man should not obey his wife
Aspire to a higher post
Nor help a friend give up the ghost.

BTW I'm terrible with numbers so I'll just tell my age - 22.

But math is my worst subject!!!
Sigh...
Okay, if Gollum had fish to eat over 3 days, and ate 10 one day, 10 the next, and 11 the next, and one got away, how many did he have to begin with?
(Sorry, YUCK, but that was the first thing to come to my head).

Raefindel 03-30-2002 10:04 PM

Yikes! Kalimac! Did you pull that one out of your noggin? I've been getting mine off the internet. I think I'd be better off with the math...

Raefindel has been mrried for 17 years, if she waited 5 years to have her first child and...

Ok stupid idea

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:04 PM

Ahh! I said math was my worst subject. It should have only been 10 all three days....

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:08 PM

Kalimac, is it MacBeth?

Kalimac 03-30-2002 10:11 PM

Raefindel - Um, actually I did make it up . Thanks. Hope it's not *too* vague. The figure it's about is someone pretty much every English-speaking person has probably heard of/read about. And like I said, they could be real or literary.

Samwise, since when is 31 embarrassingly old? Maybe if you lived 500 centures ago when the average life expectancy was about 19, but then hey, we'd both be crones together .

Kalimac 03-30-2002 10:12 PM

Samwise got it while I was making my last post (and if she doesn't want a cigar, how about a nice packet of seeds?)

Your turn .

Raefindel 03-30-2002 10:13 PM

ooOOoohh, so I'm the old one here! I'm36

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:18 PM

*Sam, calm down, it's virtual....*
*Sigh* Well take the seeds, Pat--whoops, wrong place--I mean, Kalimac.

Kalimac 03-30-2002 10:21 PM

Certainly you can have the seeds, Samwise. What kind? (Are you a flower or vegetable planter?)

Raefindel, does that mean you got married when you were 19? And here I've had people tell me that *I'm* too young yet...

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:22 PM

Hm....

Number one she would be
the fair one for all to see
a prize for her husband she has been
she is now in service of the Queen.

Yeah, easy. (At least, I hope easier than my other one...)

Raefindel 03-30-2002 10:25 PM

Gee wiz I'm never gonna get any of these historical ones!

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:25 PM

*Sam, I said they're VIRTUAL!* Agh...if you've got Hollyhocks, we'll take 'em.

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:27 PM

Eh...if it helps, Rae, in the case of my riddle, it's MIDDLE EARTH history.

Raefindel 03-30-2002 10:27 PM

Yes, Dearest, I was ALMOST 19!

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:30 PM

When my parents got married, mom was 19 and dad was 21. To me, too young to get married is 16 and down. But that's me and I haven't got kids.

I think I'll post a riddle while I'm sitting here.

I soar without wings, I see without eyes.
I've traveled the universe to and fro.
I've conquered the world ,
yet I've never been anywhere but home.

Kalimac 03-30-2002 10:32 PM

Samwise...um...Elanor, maybe, since she was "the Fair" and waited on Queen Arwen? I feel like I'm missing it completely. (One of those things where after you know the answer you slap yourself on the head - "Should have known that!")

Raefindel, neat - belated congratulations . Waiting until you're twenty-five, forsooth. No one rule will fit everyone.

Yep, Kalimac, Elanor!

Samwise 03-30-2002 10:40 PM

Aw, man....I think I've even read that one, before, Rae, and I still don't know it!

"And Bill could take a bit more, couldn't you, lad?" said Sam. The pony looked at him mournfully.

Raefindel 03-30-2002 10:43 PM

Are you married Samwise? If you tell me your address in a private message I'll send you some seeds- real seeds. Do you grow flowersZ

Raefindel 04-05-2002 07:27 PM

Much better, Thank You Samwise. She has pneumonia.

Samwise 04-05-2002 07:45 PM

Oh, good. So then she's at home now?
*Sam, would you calm down, for crying out loud.....*

It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

Alchrivëwen 04-05-2002 08:06 PM

awww Rae I hope she gets better soon, Im not feeling to hot myself

Raefindel 04-05-2002 08:12 PM

I sent you a private message about it. Thanks for asking.

Kalimac 04-06-2002 01:39 AM

Stephanos, you are correct - the answer is money. (Though Samwise, your answer fits nicely as well - hadn't thought of it, though ).

Raefindel - ouch, I'm sorry to hear that. That must have been miserable for you, not to mention your daughter. How old is she? I do hope she's mending quickly.

Everyone - your riddles are fantastic but unfortunately my brain is pretty much a vacuum right now; worked far too late this evening and have a split shift coming up tomorrow morning. I'll try to come up with some more guesses and riddles tomorrow evening, though . See you then! Time for this girl to go to bed.

Stephanos, the answer is indeed money (though Samwise, I like your answer too - and it does fit rather nicely ).

Raefindel - I'm sorry to hear it.

Kalimac 04-06-2002 01:48 AM

Sorry, just testing - I hope I haven't just posted 4 identical replies to this topic because for some reason I'm not *seeing* any of my posts...grr....
