Sorry, Tuor, wrong guess! No x ...
|
Well then, how about "f"s?
|
:D but of course !
"Mar-h/ the/ twenty_fifth/!" (......) "This/ day/ se-enteen/ years/ ag-/, R-se/ wife/, I/ didn't/ thin-/ I/ sh--ld/ e-er/ see/ thee/ again/. --t/ I/ -e-t/ -n/ h--ing/." |
"March the twenty-fifth!" said Sam?, "This day seventeen years ago, Rose wife, I didn't think I should ever see thee again. But I kept on hoping."
|
Exactly! :)
I just love this epilogue! I borrowed volume 9 just to read that. Otherwise I only have volume 10 (because I wanted to read about Finrod and Andreth), and volume 3 (the lays of Beleriand) |
Unfortunately, the next is from neither of those...
'-/ -------/ ----/ ---/ --,' he said. '---/ ----/, ---/ ---/. -----/ -----/, ----/ ----/. -----/ ----/ ---------'-/ ----/ --/ --/ ---/ ------/. ----/ ----/ -------/! --/ ----/ -------/! ----/ ----/ --/ --?' |

Well, then I must do without the "Aha!-effect" ;)
Let's have some T |
'-/ -t-----/ ----/ ---/ --,' he said. '---/ ----/, ---/ --t/.

:) My assumptions are confirmed!
Now I need some O's, please. (about 10, if I guess rightly...) |
SEAT FOR PI
'A/ stra--e/ fo--/ are/ -e,' he said. '-o-/ -o--/, -o-/ -ot/. First/ -rat-/, t-e-/ r-t-/. ---er/ -o-r/ --ieftai-'s/ feet/ or/ at/ --s/ t-roat/. -o--/ -it-/ -ar-a--/! -p/ -it-/ -a-t-or/! -i-t/ t-o-/ -o/ -p?' 12! Close enough. And I forgot an i.. :o |
:) So far I figured out this:
"A strange folk are we," he said. "now cold, now hot. First wrath, then ruth. Under your chieftain's feet or at his throat. Down with -ar-a--! Up with -a-t-or! Wilt thou go up?" I guess the two words I can't get are names? (I have no idea about whom this is) Do these names appear anywhere else than in HoME ? H perhaps?? |
AEFHIOPRST
'A/ stra--e/ fo--/ are/ -e,' he said. '-o-/ -o--/, -o-/ hot/. First/ -rath/, the-/ r-th/. ---er/ -o-r/ -hieftai-'s/ feet/ or/ at/ his/ throat/. -o--/ -ith/ Har-a--/! -p/ -ith/ -a-thor/! -i-t/ tho-/ -o/ -p?' They don't appear anywhere else, but they are closely related to some who do. The speaker is quite well-known. I have to say that there's one letter wrong in your solution. :p And I forgot another i! |
Well, perhaps Tuor will now recognise it, if he has the appropriate book :)
How about N ? |
AEFHINOPRST
'A/ stran-e/ fo--/ are/ -e,' he said. 'No-/ -o--/, no-/ hot/. First/ -rath/, then/ r-th/. -n-er/ -o-r/ -hieftain's/ feet/ or/ at/ his/ throat/. -o-n/ -ith/ Har-an-/! -p/ -ith/ -anthor/! -i-t/ tho-/ -o/ -p?' I originally only included the third line in order to make it easier for you and Tuor, because now there were actual names in it so you could maybe guess the origin... well, didn't work. If you can locate the one fault, I'll hold it solved. :) |
"A strange folk are ye" (instead of we) ? But wait and let Tuor have a guess when he's around.
|
No more waiting, I'm sorry...
'A strange folk are ye,' he said. 'now cold, now hot. First wrath, then ruth. Under your chieftain's feet or at his throat. Down with Hardang! Up with Manthor! Wilt thou go up?' It's from volume 11, The Wanderings of Húrin. When Húrin comes to Brethil he is less than unwelcome to Brandir's successor Hardang. Húrin is bitter and gets involved in an incident that gets him arrested. Manthor, relative of Hunthor, becomes his friend and defends him in the trial. The trial turns into a tumult and the Haladin revolt against their Halad. The sight of this makes Húrin speak this laconic statement. I'm not telling the end of the story, but it is sad to see what the Folk of Haleth has come to. :( So, your turn again, Guinevere! |
Thanks for the elucidation, Macalaure! :)
(Btw; Hardang is also a place in Norway, as well as an actual Norwegian familyname!) "----/ -----/, ----/ -----/! ---/ ----/ ---/ -------/, ---/ -------'-/ ------/ ----/ --/ ------/! -----/, -----/! ---/ --/ ---/ ----/ -----/ ------/ ---/ -----/ ----/." |
You're welcome. :)
