I second your assignment, Rikae! We finally have reached 80 down here. The gardeners are out in force, flowers are blooming, the rivers are overflowing, our cattle stock is overflowing with little heifers; spring is almost as fun as Autumn!:D

How do you not melt‽

I'm with Legate on this: 20 is good.

Feanor of the Peredhil 04-21-2009 10:25 AM

Macs with 18 inch screens, and high quality scanning equipment, and photo editing software that's 100% legal.

Sometimes I love my school.

Like when I'm holed up in the Mac lab...

Not really. My mother said that when she was a girl in Bethel, there was native kids running outside in t-shirts in 30 degree weather. Although I have been known to wear sandals and no jacket in the middle of December.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I made a Barrow-Downs mug to drink tea, in art class. I assign that to the Shire!

For those of us who feel life is too short ...

I heard this poem at a thing I went to on Saturday and thought it was wonderful and will pass it on:

Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better,
to paint a picture or write a letter,
bake a cake or plant a seed,
ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb,
music to hear and books to read, friends to
cherish and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world's out there
With the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain.
This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go - and go you must -
You, yourself, will make more dust!

I'd like to assign air popped popcorn with melted butter and hand grated parmesan cheese.

Mithalwen 05-04-2009 01:07 PM

Power breakers - I snipped the cord of my hedgecutters (again) and am happily (for me at least) a not electrocuted Mithalwen.

wilwarin538 05-05-2009 02:38 PM

I'd like to assign the sound of rain, it's quite lovely, especially that tapping sound against the window. Nature music is wonderful. :D

TheGreatElvenWarrior 05-05-2009 07:15 PM

I assign one of the seniors at our school. She's a Tom Bombadil fan too!!!!

Feanor of the Peredhil 05-05-2009 10:42 PM

The New England coast, and its lingering smell of dead crabs and seaweed.

Oh man do I love the ocean...

Thinlómien 05-06-2009 02:22 PM

I assign storytelling.

Can I be a professional stroyteller when I grow up... please? :D

Feanor of the Peredhil 05-10-2009 07:09 PM

Poetic justice.

Nienna 05-16-2009 03:04 PM

Thunderstorms.

TheOrcWithNoName 05-17-2009 11:22 AM

The music of Ralph Vaughan Williams and the artwork of John Constable.

Two wonderful facets that, for me, represent all that is The Shire

Sat-Navs

Thinlómien 05-28-2009 01:17 PM

Not having to study before Monday. *will rest and party* ;) :D

I assigned brushtail possums to Orthanc a few weeks ago... but now I think I have t assign them to the Shire– at least, the mother-and-child pair who live in the wall behind our stove. They come out at night to eat leftover catfood, plus any fruit I give them. Since their initial running-amok, they've been extraordinarily clean, quite and well-behaved. This is very un-possum like; I think they're trying to keep their new source of food a secret from the other possums.

The "baby" (half-grown, actually) is very friendly– he eats out of my hand and lets me stroke him*. (It only took me a day to tame him).

I fear for the future, though– the cat pretends to be asleep when they're around, but I believe she's biding her time until she can get the little one alone. When I say "possum" to her in the daytime she looks over at the stove and licks her lips...

*Or her. Hard to tell.

Eönwë 06-13-2009 04:43 AM

Having no more tests until next year.

Thinlómien 06-13-2009 07:12 AM

Aww Nerwen, that's cute. :D

I assign summer.

Pitchwife 06-13-2009 07:56 PM

I assign newly hatched chickens (especially after the recent fox-raid and after we've taken some precautions for the future). Watching them is more fun than anything on TV. They've discovered the food bowl only a short time ago. One of them is sleeping in it right now.:)

TheGreatElvenWarrior 06-18-2009 07:02 PM

I assign The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It be good!

Rune Son of Bjarne 06-26-2009 03:25 PM

Finally getting a job that is relevant for your education.

I am now employed by The Museum of Copenhagen! More specifickly in the picture archive.

What is less fun is that I was employed together with a guy named Sune. . . Very confusing for everybody else.

Lindale 06-27-2009 03:18 AM

I couldn't imagine a better job than that, Rune, unless it's the best job in the world (living in what's practically heaven and blogging about it).

Nerwen 07-11-2009 07:30 AM

I assign– getting my results back and learning that I'm now the proud owner of a shiny new postgraduate degree. (Or will be after the award ceremony, anyway.)

I mean, I didn't really expect to fail, but it's still a relief to know I passed everything and it's all over!

:):):)

Congratulations!!

Lindale 07-22-2009 04:41 AM

I assign getting to watch a solar eclipse! Yay! It's not the full eclipse here in Manila, as the full was seen in China and India, but even a partial eclipse is fine for me. :D

Brinniel 07-26-2009 04:39 PM

Late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms (so long as you're not caught outside in the middle of one). I think the one going on right now may be one of the loudest I've experienced. Not to mention the heavy rain and wind. It's amazing. :)

Ditto this. I had the amazing experience of waking up in the middle of the night last night to the feeling of mist/rain spraying at me through my open window. Through a gap in the window shade, I could see heat lightening flickering. There's something about watching a storm from bed, in the dark.

Nogrod 07-27-2009 01:46 PM

Congrats Nerwen!

And a solar eclipse is cool! We had one in -90 and even if it was cloudy the sudden darkening of everything, the silence of the birds, the settling down of the wind... that was awesome!

Also I would assign to Shire a hearty onion soup made with time and care! And some Chablis to go down with it. Just perfect for a summer evening!

Lindale 08-29-2009 05:02 AM

The perfect shade of red on my lips in my lovely graduation photos. Even without Photoshop, I think I look gorgeous! Even a Noldorin princess, perhaps. :D

Rune Son of Bjarne 08-30-2009 03:17 PM

Those are very good photos!

Feanor of the Peredhil 09-01-2009 07:45 AM

Bonding with unexpected family members over even more unexpected things. It shouldn't surprise me... I have a large family, and plenty of things to bond over...

But if I'd picked an aunt to end up talking to just about every day, it probably wouldn't have been this one. But that's quite all right with me. :)

Formendacil 09-04-2009 03:43 PM

Silent Retreats.

Not only is silence golden, but being told that the RULE is to avoid the Internet is about the only effective way to stop me grumbling under my breath that it isn't working.

Besides all of which, I've been waiting two-three months to detox a bit after the summer.

~*~*~

Unrelatedly save in terms of time:

Weather cooling off and the smell of rain simultaneously.

TheGreatElvenWarrior 09-05-2009 12:09 AM

I assign going to a Beatles Tribute Band tomorrow at the State Fair. I am sure that I will have a grand time. Though, I am not going with Laurinque, so that is saddening, but other than that, I get to have the best burgers in Alaska!

Feanor of the Peredhil 09-24-2009 06:07 PM

The incredibly soft and warm blanket I'm snuggled under which only cost me (or, rather, only cost my mom (thanks Mom!)) $4. It's green, too, which just makes it ten times more awesome.

There's nothing like cool nights combated with extreme coziness.

TheGreatElvenWarrior 09-24-2009 07:56 PM

I assign listening to the LotR soundtracks for the first time in a long while. Concerning Hobbits reminded me of my early days on the Downs, which made me extremely happy. Those were simpler, more puerile days.

Hakon 09-24-2009 09:00 PM

Having a night with homework in only one subject.

I feel like I can breathe again, it is great. I also assign getting to see a new episode of my favorite tv show without getting interrupted while watching it.

Inziladun 09-24-2009 09:04 PM

The coming weekend that I'm not on call and have no extra jobs to work.

You weren't also watching Grey's, were you?
