I support the use of negative rep when it is justified but I do not hold with the use of negative random rep.

Indeed, that was my point.

In your situation, I'd look to see if there was maybe a real reason you recieved the rep you got.

Meh, yea I know but come on didn't anyone find the word slimeball even slightly amusing? Anyway, I wouldn't have done it if there was a real reason which there wasn't.

Heres the post.
Heres what was written-
Go random-negative-reps!

And on another note I got a positive rep from Heren on that post, so the only real reason was randomosity. And even though thanks to the kindness of Morsul and Hookbill I got the points back I'd still like an apology. But I doubt the person who did will come front so I suppose we should let the matter drop unless it happens again.

Glirdan 11-15-2005 07:32 PM

Ouch Sleepy!! That's the strangest thing I've I've seen.

On a happier note, I'd like to say thanks to Gurth and TORE for getting me up onto cold Taniquetil. Thanks to everyone else who's repped me as well.

Glirdan 11-15-2005 08:59 PM

I just recieved a neg rep with this comment for my recent Crazy Captions post:

Quote:

For the overuse of both Monty Python and the horrible Mapquest jokes.
Obviously someone doesn't have a sense of humour. People really don't know how much of a pain MapQuest is, even when you're just fooling around with it.

Sounds to me like someone's rephrasing of "Random Neg Rep." Obviously everyone knows that Monty Python is used a lot, but it's nearly impossible to overuse it. And the Mapquest captions are right up there with the Gandalf uncloaking ones, they have to be done at least once per caption.

On a happier note, your welcome Glirdan (& Rune, belatedly). But that's about all I'm going to say because I don't want to get to personal in the open forums. ;)

Valesse 11-15-2005 10:43 PM

Call me under-educated in the ways of the Great greenblocks, but what does a grey/black box mean?

I've gotten red (I assumed was negitive being the opposite of green) but this is the first time a grey block has appeared. Could it be that there is some way to "rep" without being for or against the post? Or that the one giving rep is not quite at a high enough level to make any effect? The rep-giver left no name, so I am not able to message and get to the bottom of this without bothering you fine folks but she (I assume) did leave the message "sasparilla ... kewl!".

Anyway, if anyone can tell me what this mysterious new block is all about, I'll be very thankful, and you'll be my best friend. :D

the phantom 11-15-2005 11:24 PM

A grey block?

That means Gandalf repped you.

"But Gandalf isn't real!" I hear you say- but that just isn't true.

And I would warn you not to try and uncloak this grey mystery.

mormegil 11-16-2005 12:24 AM

Try this post for a wonderful explination about the grey box from The Barrow-Wight himself. Also reading over the first 2-4 pages of this thread can be very helpful in general rep questions, though I don't mind answering the ones I know. :D

Valesse 11-16-2005 12:01 PM

Ahh, thank you mormegil! I should have read back, but obvious things like that don't seem to occur to me. Thank you again for the post-link :D

TP:  Oh no!

Cailín 11-16-2005 03:01 PM

After a long time of strugglings, I am at last bound for the straight road. Which is a comforting thought, I suppose.

So, thank you all. :)

On another note - is there a possibility for anyone to see who has repped the post when it is done anonymously? Just to be on the safe side when the phantom or anyone else high up on the list suddenly goes all destructive and power-hungry and set up a random negative reputation giving-army?

I hope there isn't a way to find out. That would totally ruin my plans.

But seriously- I'd bet Admins could peek if they wanted.

Mithalwen 11-16-2005 03:09 PM

I am fairly sure that they can and would do to stop abuse ( but if I remember rightly from many pages back are, not to be bothered with trivial case when someone is merely, miffed, peeved of piqued).

Feanor of the Peredhil 11-16-2005 03:43 PM

I remember once reading stats saying that a certain percentage of reps were unsigned. How would you know that unless you could see what they say? Wish I remembered where I saw that though. I'll go look... after all... I really don't feel like writing my paper.

EDIT: I found it! Look at me, look at me!

Mithalwen 11-20-2005 11:26 AM

Has anyone else been watching with interest the "tussle" for second place in the Rep stakes that has been going on this weel? Perhaps even Lalawende's place is not as unassailable as I had assumed..

I don't think Lal needs to worry - I'm currently in second position on 7979 & she's about 650 points in front of me.....

Yes it has been rather interesting to watch the three switch back and forth. When Boromir88 first broke through it seemed so strange, not inappropriate however, but just weird to see somebody else beside SpM and Davem in the spot.

Yes I though they had got it stitched up between them .. but Fordim was top dog for a while ... and if we go by avatars probably still is.....

The Saucepan Man 11-20-2005 05:52 PM

I was rather hoping that 8000 points would mark the beginning of a new level. Alas, it has proven not to be. Can it be that we have reached the end of the line ...? :(

Well wouldn't that be boring. ;)

It'd end up being just like before (the reputation system), everyone being returned to an equal footing. Well, maybe not that, but we'd all have at least returned to Taniquetil, :D

Lhunardawen 11-21-2005 01:45 AM

So we'll just go up Taniquetil, come down again and do all sorts of crazy Middle-earth-and-BDers-related stuff, then climb up yet again? Wouldn't Lorien be a more appropriate resting place after all that mischief? :D

Oh, and I've just noticed that I'm currently dating myself.

Yes, I briefly usurped 2nd, but haven't been able to be on as much lately. With Christmas drawing near it becomes our second biggest fireworks selling season. Plus, I'm leaving Wednesday to see family. :D

Valesse 11-21-2005 01:18 PM

Speaking of Taniquetil, I just got there!

Goodness knows how, though... Perhaps I hitched a ride with someone or stowed away-- but anyway I would like to thank all of those people who have repped me to this point. I can see my house from here. ;)

Also, I don't think you'll stay "mounting Taniquetil again" for long, B88, BW will think of some more interesting ranks. :p

Maybe just Clapham Junction...... perhaps you have to hit 10K which considering how many points (lol I typed pints the first time!) you guys up there must be chucking out... may not be so very long... ( and 8K is a not even on my horizon yet).

At what point do I start getting 'cash back' or 'frequent poster miles?' ;)

Now Fordy you know that we aren't meant to post in other languages now ;)
And besides - if I translate correctly what you have just said is both, vulgar, religious and political..... :p

Morsul the Dark 11-22-2005 02:30 PM

I know nothing about the web or computers(im lucky i got this far) but i think as far as negative reps go we should choose what amount to give out of our given amount say I can give 15(im guessing i dont know) I should be able to choose a number between 1 and 15 to give because sometimes you just want to a warn a person about a post not punish them I just gave a negative rep where I felt half of my possbbile points would have been effective i almost feel guilty about it

Edit:actually if i calculated i have 14 rep points to give only one off from my guess thats not too shabby

Folwren 11-22-2005 03:01 PM

Someone recently gave me a rep (a possitively, happily, haha) and didn't sign. Thanks much whoever gave it, but I'm more than curious to know who it was. . .

Maybe Im the only self-centered one here but when I go to whos onlie and i see someones "giving peutation i automaticly check mine to see if it was given to me

anyone else do that?

Mithalwen 11-22-2005 03:08 PM

The secret admirer puzzle is so much more fun than the mystery heckler... and obviously nicer......

Apologies, m'dear Mith. Consider me chastened. Yip-yip-yip...

And you are not alone! I received my very first negative rep for that very post. Irony of ironies to be negatively repped in the Reputation thread! This rep was, I am happy to say, signed so I can't complain too much. Apparently, the poster found the post immature....

hmmmm....

You're imnature you big stupid stupid-face! Nyaaa, nyaaaaaa -- *thbbbbp* *THBBBBBBBBBBBP* Your mom wears pumpkins and your dad eats rotten turnips!!

Firefoot 11-22-2005 07:58 PM

I got a (positive, unsigned) rep today saying, "go random rep points!" for a post in the Best Locations thread. Thank you, I guess... At first I thought it might be the same person who neg repped Sleepy but I only gained about 5 points.

Don't think I'm complaining - I'm not - but random points aren't really the point of the system. It feels much better to get points for a well done post where you actually like what I said rather than just because I got pulled in a random draw, per se. But thank you.

And thank you to all of you who gave me rep to shove me off Taniquetil - it's rather fun to go and look when I get new rep points to find out whether I've hit a new level. :D

If you just want to warn somebody, not punish, why don't you send a pm?

EDIT: also the fact that I really really wanted to negative rep the post but for only like half my points

The way I understand neg rep to work is that you do only give half points. So let's say a BDowner who gives out 30 positive points neg reps me for this post, it will then take me down 15 points.

Gurthang 11-27-2005 08:01 PM

Too bad we can't rep ourselves. I'd give myself a negative just to see exactly how it works. (Not that I really want one, I'm just that curious.)
