Samwise_Gamgee 12-18-2002 05:37 PM

It hatches like a bird, yet grows as fast as evil, it makes the earth quake, yet it stays still 4ever...what is it?

That's one of my lamest riddles. The most obvious one actually But oh well...

Aragorn_The_King 12-18-2002 07:30 PM

Time?

Nuranar 12-18-2002 09:40 PM

Many thanks, Gandalf. I shall post a riddle as soon as I think of one (which may or may not take a while) and as soon as I can get to a computer (which may be from several days to several weeks.)

Samwise_Gamgee , thank you for your riddle! I have not cracked it yet...

Susan Delgado 12-19-2002 02:23 AM

Is it a tree, Samwise Gamgee?

bombur 12-19-2002 09:16 AM

"It hatches like a bird, yet grows as fast as evil, it makes the earth quake, yet it stays still 4ever...what is it?"

River?

It hatches from between the rocks as a tiny stream. It grows fast into a river though you cannot point out exactly when it becomes that. It makes the earth quake as a waterfall. The RIVER never moves, only the water.

It comes in, It goes out.
To let it go for good is to die
Hold it too tight and it never returns

bombur, is it one's breath?

bombur 12-20-2002 07:02 AM

Yep. Lame, aint it...

I'm better at solving them then inventing them.

I'd rather just solve those I can without asking any in turn...

WarBringer 12-20-2002 09:12 AM

who is next?please go!!!

Garen LiLorian 12-21-2002 08:33 AM

Well, in the absence of anyone else...
Here's something short, that I wrote today. Seems pretty obvious to me, but then again, I wrote it

Armies march at my command,
Yet I speak in no tongue of Man,
I shiver, though not from fear,
Though I carry it to those who hear,
Grond I command, and orcish host,
Hear my voice sounding Deep, and know you are lost.

Have fun!

Is it Evil? I first thought either Melkor or Sauron, but then I thought evil would be a better answer for a riddle.

Garen LiLorian 12-21-2002 09:19 PM

Not evil, although that's a good guess.

It in itself is neither good nor evil, it simply is.

Tigerlily Gamgee 12-22-2002 12:36 AM

Susan, I'm here! Whew!

OK... my guess at this latest riddle is "thunder".

Tigerlily Gamgee 12-22-2002 12:38 AM

...or perhaps a war horn?

Susan Delgado 12-22-2002 01:07 AM

Yay!

"Horn" sounds good to me too.

Garen LiLorian 12-22-2002 01:24 AM

No, no and no. Although, as a hint, I was inspired by Gandalf_theGrey's riddle.(to which the answer was "horn") Also, there is one hint in the riddle itself that you might be able to find, although it isn't obvious.

Garen LiLorian 12-22-2002 09:35 PM

Do you need another hint?

Aragorn_Protector 12-24-2002 03:24 PM

I'm new. I'd lke to make one.

You could say I sing
Yet voice I have not
I kill at my masters order
an outstreched arm.

Tigerlily Gamgee 12-24-2002 11:45 PM

Yes, a hint, Garen. I am guessing that the capitalization of "Deep" may be a clue, but I am having a dumb streak.

Aragorn... is the answer to yours a sword?

Garen LiLorian 12-25-2002 01:21 AM

Aragorn, my guess at yours is an arrow, or maybe a bow and arrows or something along those lines.

You are quite right to think the capitalization of Deep a clue, though it refers not to Helm's Deep. In fact, it is capitalized merely to draw attention, and is not where I drew that part from in the books. It is a double-entandre (sp?). While in LotR, it is always the forebearer of evil, (except for one place, and then it is imitated and not actual) although in RL, it is merely part of life.

That's all the hint you get for now.
Let me know if you need more.

Susan Delgado 12-25-2002 01:57 AM

Is it a drum, Garen?

Garen LiLorian 12-25-2002 09:12 AM

It is indeed. Congrats. Out of curiousity, what tipped you off?

Your turn.

[ December 25, 2002: Message edited by: Garen LiLorian ]

Susan Delgado 12-25-2002 11:03 AM

Well, drums are often used to herald a marching army--that's the first two lines. And the "shivering" line; the drumskin vibrates every time it's struck.

I'll be back with my own riddle in a little while.

Aragorn_Protector 12-25-2002 02:50 PM

You got it Garen, A bow and Arrows it is.

Aragorn_Protector 12-26-2002 11:44 AM

Where is everyone, it's been days

Susan Delgado 12-26-2002 12:36 PM

It's Christmas, Aragorn. People want to be with their families; you have to be patient.

Taure Leafsilver 12-27-2002 10:07 AM

I know one! may I post?

Aragorn_Protector 12-27-2002 12:51 PM

Go on Taren Leavesilver take Garens place. And I know it's the holidays I was tired when I wrote that sorry Susan.

Taure Leafsilver 12-27-2002 04:41 PM

Thank you.

A poor man has it,
A rich man does not.
It''s more evil than evil,
more powerful than God.
If you eat it you will die.

Susan Delgado 12-28-2002 12:19 AM

Ahh, nuttin'

Taure Leafsilver 12-28-2002 07:52 AM

Correct! well sorta. Nothing is the answer

Garen LiLorian 12-28-2002 10:40 AM

Apologies, Aragorn_Protector. As Susan guessed my riddle at the same time as I guessed yours, I simply thought I'd let her go ahead, and we could keep it to one at a time. Since, however, the thread is empty at the moment, and with the gracious permission of Miz. Delgado, I'll go ahead and post another one.

Tiptoes, but there's a loud sound,
You may think I'm white, but you'd be wrong.
Thunder charge, lightning speed,
Measure power by me.

What am I?

hobbitlass 12-28-2002 12:27 PM

electricity.

Aragorn_Protector 12-28-2002 12:44 PM

SHADOWFAX

By the way, do you like my quote below??

Garen LiLorian 12-28-2002 10:49 PM

Nice quote .

Close enough. The answer is just "horse," but I'll accept Shadowfax. Your turn

Susan Delgado 12-28-2002 11:22 PM

Sorry, been busy. Family, you know. No reason we can't have more than one going at a time.

I run smoother than any rhyme.
I love to fall but cannot climb.
I can the heaviest burdens bear,
yet tremble at each breath of air.

Gandalf_theGrey 12-29-2002 12:43 AM

Water?

Susan Delgado 12-29-2002 02:08 AM

Correct.

Aragorn_Protector 12-29-2002 03:00 PM

Heres mine and by the way another good answer to Susans would be an eagle. I know it is already answered but pretty good eh.

I live in dark
Two glowing orbs have I that say I'm neer
As I admit the stink of fear
