Its from the Folk of the Faraway Tree. I loved those books. Am I right?

Carlas 01-29-2003 03:33 PM

I'd like to nominate Mithadan, its such a nice name. And the guy who be short, it reminds me of all my friends(accept that most of them are girls)

Amanaduial the archer 01-29-2003 03:44 PM

the guy who be short? Cool name!

Mithadan...tis a good name, but has anyone else read the Artifacts of Power Quartet? Mithadans name reminds me of Miathan, the baddie. Sorry Mith. Mind you, he was a very cool bad guy...

Aylwen Dreamsong 01-29-2003 08:38 PM

I nominate Smith of the Word.

Spot on, eleanor. My favorite books before I read The Hobbit. I have just read them to my 5 year old daughter and she was absolutely captivated - can't wait to read Bilbo's adventures to her.

Gwaihir the Windlord 01-30-2003 01:51 AM

Yeah, I read the Faraway Tree books as a kid (I read a bit of one recently actually ). They are very good.

The best nick here has to be that of Tom Bombariffic. I like it anyway.

Birdland 01-30-2003 02:15 AM

Gwaihir - I started when I saw that name, since it reminded me of the "Tom Terrific" cartoon from the old Captain Kangaroo shows. Coincidence? Hmmmmm, we wonders, precious.

That's going wayyyyy back. Wonder if Tom qualifies for the "Tolkien Coming-of-Age" Club.

*Varda* 01-30-2003 04:50 AM

The Faraway Tree! That's where I knew it from!

Come to think of it, now I should have just looked at your location and that would have given it away..

Merri 01-30-2003 11:53 AM

I forgot to add *Varda* and Gorwingel

Do it as soon as you can! My dad read me the Hobbit when I was four, and I loved it! Just skip past some of the longer descriptive parts.

Balin999 02-06-2003 12:59 PM

Definitely Burrahobbit. Not just because I like his name, but also because we are at the same forum for nearly three years now.
Go, burra, go!

Mithadan 02-06-2003 01:14 PM

I've been nominated? That's a bit of a surprise. For my part, I've always been fond of the nicknames "Amanaduial the archer" and "Marileangorifurnimaluim" (has anyone tried to work out what it means?). "Durelen", "Mr. Underhill" and our inestimable "Squatter of Amon Rudh" are also among my favorites. Of course, for sheer truthfulness "Nonesuch" can't be beaten.

Hmm, well, she's trying out a bit of CS Lewis right now. Perhaps I'll try the Hobbit after that. But, I'm afraid that I couldn't bring myself to leave anything out.

Nevvasaiel 02-06-2003 01:30 PM

Always thought the imagery in Purplefluffychainsaw
was quite, well, stunning.....

eleanor_niphredil 02-06-2003 01:47 PM

I just saw a "bad things always happen to me" that I found rather amusing...

TolkienGurl 02-06-2003 02:39 PM

I nominate these here names...

InklingElf
Angry Hill Troll
Lalaith
the_raging_jackass
WarBringer

Just to name a few.

Diamond18 02-06-2003 02:48 PM

Ah, Eleanor, you beat me to it. But I'll second bad things always happen to me. How intriguing.

Funny you should mention that, Mith. But when it comes to names, I must agree. There is none such as Mithadan...

But honestly, thinking about the meaning of "Mith-adan" I simply refuse to believe that name fits! You're too young, sorry!

Wow...somehow I missed this thread until now. Thank you for the nominations, Doug and Maril - I'm flattered .

I tend to like the names which are a little out of the way and whose meanings aren't immediately obvious ... which would be about 99% of the names here...

LUSH: Because the word brings a whole host of images to mind at once, all of them vivid .

MARILEANGORIFURNIMALUIM (did I spell that right?): Because it's so friggin' long, it MUST mean something deeply important.

DOUG*PLATYPUS: Again, the reference is mysterious enough that there must be some heavy significance behind it. Doug, where does the platypus come from?

THE SAUCEPAN MAN: Just because it sounds cool.

BILL FERNY: As someone said before, just because it takes chutzpah to call yourself that. I'm still waiting to see someone sign up as "Slant-eyed Southerner".

RAEFINDEL: For having to courage to make a personal coinage in Elvish.

HERENISTARION: Just because it sounds cool.

And quite a few more that are on the tip of my tongue (or fingers) but which I can't quite remember right now...

Nuinatariel 02-16-2003 12:59 PM

I nominate Skippy the Nazgul. How can you not like a Nazgul named Skippy?

elven maiden Earwen 02-16-2003 01:32 PM

gosh there so many and lot of them have already been said.
Anything But Arwen
Skippy The Nazgul
Aylwen Dreamsong
Lush
The Barrow-Weight Beren 87
Im going to stop there but there are soooo many more good ones. Sorry to anyone if i spelled you nick wrong.

Hilde Bracegirdle 02-19-2003 11:42 AM

Did I see "Sauron999 member number 666" the other day. Yikes that is scary! Couldn't we have skipped over THAT member number?

Salix 02-19-2003 01:44 PM

Dang! I have a nomination, but I can't remember the name. Oh well. I like all the names mentioned. Seriously, I don't have a favorite.

Diamond18 02-19-2003 01:46 PM

Sauron999 is just Balin999's alter ego. I think he did it on purpose.

Carlas 02-19-2003 05:56 PM

I want to add Lush ! Its simple, sophisticated, and just fun!

P.S. Love your sig. Diamond

Wow, my 50th post! I'm so proud!

Found my nomination. Rec the Hedgehog. I thought that was an interesting name when I first saw it.

What is Balin999 member number ... 13?

Balin999 02-20-2003 12:45 PM

hey that was not done on purpose!
of course, I don't mind having the member number 666 as Sauron999, but I didn'T even notice until someone told me. Nevertheless I think it's cool
With Balin999 I was Member Number 3 or 5, but it has somehow risen to 61 and the same was the case with burrahobbit. They changed the numbers for some reason. (for the mods, I think)

Nuinatariel 02-20-2003 04:37 PM

I have found a new nominee. Balrog Skwerl. Creative, and it has the word 'skwerl' in it.

Hilde Bracegirdle 02-20-2003 06:17 PM

Well met Balin999/Sauron999. Glad that you don't seem too beastly!

You never know, Hilde Bracegirdle, you never know...

Hilde Bracegirdle 02-22-2003 01:08 PM

Hmmm...Well at least if you are a beast you are civilized enough to be able to type...and spell! (read "possibily not having cloven hooves and evidently having some form of formal education")

avarrogion 02-22-2003 06:50 PM

CAn i vote my own nick? ...nah just joking
Here`s my vote :

1. The Saucepan Man ( reminds me of a character from Legend of Mana )
2. WarBringer

Gorwingel 02-22-2003 08:49 PM

Merri, thank you for nominating me
That makes me so happy, I did not expect that

Gorothlammothiel 02-23-2003 12:53 PM

I'd like to add a nomination if I may.

Lady Aerowen has always impressed me, though I have not encounted her on the forum for quite some time now. Now I don't know that the name was created before the release of the films (or even that the ramble that follows is in anyway significant), if it was then it is an odd coincidence that the Lady Aerowen should be a play on the lady Arwen, and that she was portrayed by a certain very famous rock stars daughter, no?

Balin999 02-24-2003 03:03 PM

Hm, after your description, I'm not a beast (whew).
But you don't need to look like a beast, to be one. He he.
Well, I guess I'm rather a nice person, so you don't need to be afraid of corresponding with someone who's mad, Hilde Bracegirdle.

Hilde Bracegirdle 02-25-2003 11:56 AM

You’re not planning on taking over the world and enslaving the free peoples are you? Some people would call that a mad idea, some wouldn’t. All kidding aside, you are right, beasts don’t always look beastly and some who look beastly are quite often very nice, (not that I know any with hooves of course).

Sadbh 02-25-2003 01:32 PM

How can you choose who has the best nick? There are so many great ones!

1. Anything but Arwen
2. burrahobbit
3. Lush

And there are too many more to add. But I think the awards for the most unpronouncable nick go to Maril as well as the award for most syllables.

However, I would like to nominate myself for the strangest spelling. Sadbh is a name, and is pronouncable, just very confusing.

Don't listen to me, I've gone insane.

-Sadbh
