do not go to the elves for advice for they will say both yes and no??? *the book's downstairs* Frodo to Haldir in Fellowship

Voronwe 01-29-2002 03:02 AM

Correct. Your turn.

this isn't technically a "mistranslation" coz I didn't translate anything...so if it doesn't count then someone else can go
the dog that barks may prove a friend

HerenIstarion 02-01-2002 10:51 AM

that must be something about Aragorn in Bree

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-01-2002 04:46 PM

certainly something to do with Aragorn...

HerenIstarion 02-02-2002 10:30 AM

uh huh
wild guess - all that is gold does not glitter?

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-02-2002 04:20 PM

mmhmm

HerenIstarion 02-03-2002 12:52 PM

well, something about foul looks and fair behavior?

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-03-2002 02:54 PM

lol sorry, "mmhmm" meant "yes, you're right...plz continue"

HerenIstarion 02-04-2002 10:03 AM

heh

ok, next one

come on, you brute! come on, I’ll pay the debts for my friend. Then we will go on, but first I’ll pay my debt to you! come here, and Ill entertain you with this again!

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-05-2002 05:43 AM

it's Sam in Moria when his blood's up after Frodo's been attacked

HerenIstarion 02-07-2002 03:23 AM

aye, correct.

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-08-2002 06:49 AM

when I'm "home" I'm no longer awake; no longer truly alive; but simply in a kind of stupor

KayQy 02-08-2002 01:34 PM

Is that the next quote or a comment on your current mental state?

Assuming it's the first, I'm going to day it sounds like Frodo to Sam, either on the way to Mount Doom with the Ring taking more control, or after they go back to the Shire. I'm probably completely wrong, but I hope not. I need to redeem myself! I can't believe I forgot about a thread for nearly a year! (and if anyone's still curious, the original of that quote I put on page 2 is Pip saying to Merry, "It's coming out in a minute," when Frodo's about to spill the beans)

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-08-2002 03:17 PM

lol that was my mistranslation...and no, not Frodo to Sam

HerenIstarion 02-09-2002 03:39 AM

maybe Bilbo to Gandalf? this one:

Quote:

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean: like butter that has been scraped over too much bread. That can’t be right. I need a change, or something

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-09-2002 06:04 AM

no should I give a hint???

KayQy 02-09-2002 10:18 AM

pretty please

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-09-2002 03:45 PM

this is the way I feel about what Frodo says at one point, and I guess kinda my interpretation...maybe if you ignore the last part (the stupor part)it'll be easier

Joy 02-10-2002 12:37 AM

Is it Bilbo to Frodo at Rivendell?

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-10-2002 05:23 AM

Frodo says it in ROTK-come on guys

KayQy 02-11-2002 01:10 PM

"Not to me," said Frodo. "To me it feels like falling asleep again."

No wonder I didn't get it earlier, he's replying to Merry, not Sam.

Eowyn of Ithilien 02-14-2002 04:50 AM

yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy your turn

KayQy 02-14-2002 06:18 PM

Time to redeem myself...

I don't know if I have to put the direct quote or not, but here's my guess about the quote. It is speaking of Sam and the gift " of RotK. He had planted a garden all across the Shire and put the dust of Lorien over it. In the place of Bilbo's Party grew a Mallorn Tree.

KayQy 02-16-2002 05:24 PM

Good guess, but nope.

HerenIstarion 02-17-2002 04:41 AM

maybe it's a description of Galadriel's and Celeborn's palace?

Quote:

Upon it, as a double crown, grew two circles of trees: the outer had bark of snowy white, and were leafless but beautiful in their shapely nakedness; the inner were mallorn-trees of great height, still arrayed in pale gold

KayQy 02-17-2002 06:55 AM

A bit closer, but still no.

'Dream' should be capitalized, if that helps any.

Bruce MacCulloch 02-17-2002 07:56 AM

It's Aragorn to Legolas and Gimli when they find the traces of Pippin and Merry eating lembas near the eaves of Fangorn.
(It was the word crumb that gave it away, although where the word gram comes from in that quote, I have no idea.)

KayQy 02-18-2002 07:47 AM

That's it! I don't know how grass got turned to gram either, but it makes it sound like something fattening! (Knew there had to be a catch to lembas...)

Have at it, I'm going to disappear for a while into schoolwork...

Quote:

You deform in the following mark, and then do not be they of another attack.

Joy 02-19-2002 10:00 PM

Gandalf to Frodo talking about the Morgul blade trying to pierce his heart. He said that
Quote:

If they succeded, you would have become like they are, only weaker and under their command. You would have become a wraith under the dominion of the Dark Lord...

Bruce MacCulloch 02-19-2002 10:39 PM

Nope!
Only thing I will say is that it was English to German to French and back again to English.

HerenIstarion 02-20-2002 01:58 AM

may it be description of 3 hobbits' jorney through the Shire?

Quote:

Yet since that far cry they had seen and heard no sign that the enemy had marked their flight or followed them

Bruce MacCulloch 02-20-2002 10:38 AM

Still no!
(This is one of my favorite quotes, by the way!)

Bruce! Dude, you are crazy!! English to German to French back to English??? aaaahhhhh!!! ithink i'm gonna go hide in hole. Its too much for me.

HerenIstarion 02-21-2002 10:44 AM

well. may that be Beregond to Pippin on the walls of Minath-Tirith looking down at Nazgul and Faramir's troop?:

Quote:

? See how they wheel and swoop, always down to that point over there!
"point over there" would be "following mark, "amd swooping - "another attack". But I can't make out "be no they of".

Bruce MacCulloch 02-21-2002 12:18 PM

It might be helpful if I expanded the quote a bit and also quoted the next sentence.
Quote:

You deform in the following mark, and then do not be they of another attack. You are now calm!
There, maybe that will help someone.

Mat_Heathertoes 02-21-2002 05:09 PM

Gah! - The answer was there all the time ..

Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance. Now be quiet!

Too simple for a learned lore-master in these suspicious days .....

Bruce MacCulloch 02-21-2002 10:53 PM

Heh heh - I said all along that it was one of my favorite quotes!
Very well done, Mr. Heathertoes! You are correct, as usual.
