Well, Hey! That's the best place to get one!
|
Now, I don't really know about that, sweet Rae, knowing the fact that most of my "man-made" nicks would be deleted immediately by the admins if I posted them here....
Ok, so I'm not always the nicest person to be around... But I know you guys wouldn't want me any other way! |
I like the name Faye and Pippin had been my favorite hobbit at the time.
|
I don't think a man has EVER given me a nickname.
|
Oh hush, pumpkin-dumpling-kins.
|
My rather lame nickname is taken from the appendix. I wanted something to do with Pippin that would be feminine (yet practical...) and which wouldn't be all over the board in various versions (like Arwen, there are hundreds of Arwen something-or-others registered).
The 18 is my age, which, ironically, I slapped on because just "Diamond" was already taken. Yes, I'm an idiot, but once I decided on it I had to have it. I wish I had made it more personal and clever and catchy, though. Boooo hoooo hoooo. Hmmmm, I hope you like your new nickname, Rae. I've amassed a few nicks from the opposite sex, but they're far too boring to share, and one is from my dad, so that doesn't count. |
Quote:
P.S. Rimbaud, you're a cutie. |
Oh, yes Lush, say that right after I said "I've amassed a few".
|
I just stuck my name into the generator on the main page.

Vanabaliel was what the good old name generator gave me (do I sense a pattern here?) and then I got the urge to find out what it meant. When looking up the prefix Vana, I found it was a Valar similar to Persephone, and I liked the description of her so much I decided to become her follower.
-'Vana |
I wanted to be at once silly, cryptic and ambiguous. Some may think that it's a fairly obvious choice, but those people don't know which character I had in mind.

Well,
I got my name from The Silmarillion. And the character..(er)..Eärendil. (Obvious, isn´t it?) He happens to be my favourite Tolkien-character. And reminds me of myself in a way. [ February 11, 2003: Message edited by: Eärendil ] |
Hurin and Turin are two of my three favorite characters, so I figured this name would cover them both.
And, Lush, you're dead on saying that you usually only get nick-names for bad rather than good qualities. I don't think I have ANY nicknames with good conotations! (and I can only think of one person, that *&^%@#, who only has good nicknames from the opposite sex) |
And who might that be??
(I wasn't going to say anything, but you left the door open, lord. And those nicknames are earned, you gotta give me that.) Here's an explanation of my BDs nick that I copied from a similar thread I posted on some time ago... In elementary school I used to do all sorts of things to entertain my friends. I would steal chalk from the chalk board and books from the inside of my teacher's desk, and I'd always do it while the teacher was in the room watching us. I was slick. One time I went up to talk to the teacher at her desk and stole a book, a pencil holder, and her glasses off the desk while she was looking right at me and talking to me. I would always place these items on the teacher's desk the following day when she wasn't in the room, and I'd always have a sticky note attached that read "from the Phantom". Eventually a classmate blew the whistle on me and I got in trouble. Later on, when I was in high school, the kids in my music theory and music composition courses started calling me 'phantom' because I was always singing or humming Phantom of the Opera tunes. (I love Phantom of the Opera) This nickname caught on with my friends because I was still known for doing all sorts of sneaky pranks and never getting caught. I really liked the sound of "The Phantom", it sounds so mysterious, so I let everybody call me that and have used that name for e-mail and stuff ever since. |
Long, long ago (before the Internet became the World Wide Web, or is that the other way around?) I wanted an Elvish translation of my name "Robert" which means "bright fame."
I didn't find anything that precisely corresponded (perhaps with today's resources it would be an easier task). I settled on Gilthalion: gil-star + thalion-stalwart. I thought it sounded cool and that I would not find a duplication. +20 years and no dopplegangers, duplicates, clones, secret evil twins, or coincidences yet! |
How's it happen that the usually super-conceited phantom didn't gleefully post his other nicknames??
|
Don't tempt me!!
And it seems to me that you've always been the one to brag about things (eg any time you win a game of Balderdash or Taboo, and that one time you beat me in basketball). |
*yawns* My nickname is pretty easy. It's from the fairy tale, of course. But it was given to me by a friend because everytime they came to my room, I was asleep! Speaking of sleep...it's time for my nap. Good night...
|
Eärwen is my favorite elf name so i figured that would make a good enough nick.
|
Yes, I like this nick. I am an incorrigible X Phile, the self appointed name for a fan of the show. Phial refers to the Phial of Galadriel, since I happen to really love that literary device.
|
I chose Nimrodel because Legolas sang of her and I like the idea of an Elf singing my name.
|
I got mine from the name generator here at the Barrow Downs. It is the female Elf version of my first name, though I realized I spelled it wrong, It should end -giel, NOT, -gel.
Oh well, it is still a cool nickname though |
My nick comes from a rather unusual source. I was looking through a Latin dictionary that I got for Christmas a couple of years ago, and for some reason (Mostly cause my name sounds kinda dumb in Latin) I looked up willow, (Which is a cool name and I had a friend named Willow once) and found a nickname that was decent. (As supposed to 'caelum')

"Horny Tom" (Thomas being my first name) by my classmates. That was rather unfair.... |
I got mine by flipping through a random book on my computer desk many years ago while looking for something that wasn't taken, so I could get an email address. Oh, how such trivial decisions are fateful. I have yet to find another person with this nick anywhere on the internet.
By the way, for the (faultless, mind you) ignorant, here is what it comes from: Quote:

Ok, I'm really not original on this, but.. When I first found this site, I looked at the Name Generator, thought "hey, that's cool!" and typed my name into it, getting "Gayahithwen" from it.. then, it just sort of stuck, and when I decided to sign up for the forum, I couldn't come up with a better name, so.. Yeah, I used it.
Later on, I found out that it meant "awe-inspiring misty maiden".. and I'm pretty happy with that.. Quote:
Varda - the Valier of the Stars.. Supposedly, her name means 'sublime' (in the sense of 'high' or 'lofty') mar - "earth".. this could also be már, meaning "home, house".. So, to me, your name seems to mean something more like "Of the house of Varda" or something like that.. As I already mentioned, I'm no expert.. |
I have absolutely no idea of where I got my nick, as I was half-asleep at the time I made it up, and desperate for ideas. I actually just wanted to bring this thread to the top, so that more people would post on it

Mine carries significance only to those of my friends who are as fanatical about soccer as I am. Lush might, with her love for Real now something about TIFO's, but UEFA has done much to eliminate them from the international football scene.
Anyway, the short definition of my nick is that TIFO is what I do for a hobby, GCS is who I am. I wanted to register as Jaws 'cause that's another nick I have, and one of my friends has taken to calling me Jorge de (insert something spanish-sounding here) every time I walk into the room. He usually thinks of something new daily... most of my other Dansih friends call me Georg, using the danish pronounciation, and at work they call me Junior.... seems like the fine name of George is going out of fashion these days... I wonder why... |
Silmarien after the ancester of Elendil, Isildur and Aragorn. Eldest daughter of a King of Numenor, before the law was changed that would have made her Queen. But she married the first Lord of Andunie(a bay on the west side of Numenor)and from her line came the Elf friends, the faithful. I also really like it because of its meaning - Lady of the light of the two trees or Lady of the light of the sun and the moon.
I was really suprised when I signed up to find that it had not been already used, but very glad. -Silmarien |
The last king of Arthedain. I was somewhat suprised the name wasn't already taken when I signed up last month.

Are you FoggyMan? as per my [alas un]humble person, I beat you all. (yes, even you, burra) For I'm 5 persons at once, and it suits me well. I'm wise like 5 wizards, but only 1/5 of me is working properly, one 1/5 is careless, 2/5 are straying no one knows were, and 1/5 is treacherous. The case for medical study, somehow I were Tar-Ancalime on BD forum for one day, for I liked her much, yet than it dawned onto me I was mistaken for a lady, which I'm not, and having tried to register as Olorin, which was already taken, I've decided to express my (than obvious, if now less so) schizophrenia into a nickname here we are, with Order of Wizards all in my head |
Disturbing...

Betho is my nickname all my friends in real life and online call me.
HOG (all caps) stands for House Of God, which is what my name, Bethany, means. |
Mine came from the Chris Wetherell hobbitname generator--because I liked the sound of it better than BD's--and used my maiden name because otherwise I would have been a Hardbottle --and "Peony Foxburr" was "of Loamsdowne." Which suits my avocation of digging in the dirt.
|
I suppose I chose mine because I like Yavanna, I like the sound of the name, and because I love the earth and its beauty. 228 are just some random numbers I tacked on the end, because 87, my birth year, just didn't look 'right' to me So there is the etymology of my nickname...hurrah!
Peace |
Simple explanation- I used it somewhere else and was in a rush to get posting!
In fact Lyra is from 'His Dark MAterials'- a fantastic trilogy by Philip Pullman which made me cry. And Lyra reminded me of me, in some ways, and I think it's a lovely naem. Greenleaf was pretty much a homage to Orlando Bloom, sad as it is to admit it! |
Mine came in two parts: _Flame, because I'm a pyro and Sapphire, because it went with my pen-name at FF.net, SapphireMeriadocTook.
