Gandalf sings this out loud to himself when he and Pippin are on the way to Minas Tirith.

Melephelwen 11-18-2002 10:00 AM

Yes. You're on

hobbitlass 11-19-2002 12:40 PM

Quote:

The stars are in blossom, the moon is in flower
And bright are the windows of Night in her tower
Just a couple of lines to start off.

Joy 11-22-2002 12:33 AM

Quote:

Sing all ye joyful, now sing all together!
The wind's in the tree-top, the wind's in the heather;
The stars are in blossom, the moon is in flower,
And bright are the windows of Night in her tower.

Dance all ye joyful, now dance all together!
Soft is the grass, and let foot be like feather!
The river is silver, the shadows are fleeting;
Merry is May-time, and merry our meeting.
Sing we now softly, and dreams let us weave him!
Wind him is slumber and there let us leave him!
The wanderer sleepeth. Now soft be his pillow!
Lullaby! Lullaby! Alder and Willow!
Sigh no more Pine, till the wind of the morn!
Fall Moon! Dark be the land!
Hush! Hush! Oak, Ash and Thorn!
Hushed be all water, till dawn is at hand!
It is sung in Rivendell in the "Hobbit" The chapter The Last Stage.

hobbitlass 11-22-2002 11:06 AM

yep, that's it, Joy. I like to sing that to my girls. Your go.

busybee 12-27-2002 09:14 AM

Since Joy isn't going pleeze can i go?pleeze?pretty pleeze

hobbitlass 12-27-2002 10:53 AM

I beleive the rules are to give a person a week to proceed and then it's up for grabs. And since it has been, definitely go on.

busybee 12-28-2002 05:32 AM

Yeah!Ok here u go

When dawn came dim the land was lost,
The mountains sinking grey
Beyond the heaving waves that tossed
Their plumes of blinding spray

Good luck!

Bruce MacCulloch 12-30-2002 10:44 AM

Legolas singing of Nimrodel.

busybee 01-02-2003 11:07 AM

Yes I do believe we have the correct answer!Congratulations Bruce MacCulloch you have won 1st prize which is the chance to quote the next quote!

Bruce MacCulloch 01-03-2003 12:24 AM

Quote:

Till in the sky the stars were pale,
and dawn was in the air.

hobbitlass 01-03-2003 07:27 AM

Quote:

The Man in the Moon took another mug,
and then rolled beneath his chair;
And there he dozed and dreamed of ale,
till in the sky the stars were pale,
and dawn was in the air.
-Frodo singing at the Prancing Pony

Bruce MacCulloch 01-03-2003 11:04 PM

Very good, hobbitlass!

hobbitlass 01-04-2003 07:51 AM

Quote:

And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with weary feet,
Until it joins some larger way,

Bruce MacCulloch 01-04-2003 02:30 PM

Both Bilbo and Frodo sang that.

hobbitlass 01-04-2003 07:13 PM

Actually, only Frodo sang that exact part. Bilbo sang 'eager feet', Frodo said 'weary feet'. Your turn.

Bruce MacCulloch 01-06-2003 08:07 PM

Thank you!

This is not exactly a quote of someone singing, but it fits:
Quote:

a song of staying, resisting, battling against power

Nevolosse Maehayanda 01-15-2003 02:43 PM

A Elbereh Galadriel Gilthoniel!

Morgoth Bauglir 01-15-2003 08:01 PM

didnt fingolfin sing that "against" sauron?

Bruce MacCulloch 01-19-2003 11:31 PM

That is correct, Morgoth Bauglir.
Your turn.

Firondoiel 03-30-2003 08:13 PM

I'd like to revive this thread.

Quote:

The world was fair, the mountains tall
In Eldar Days begore the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.

alaklondewen 03-30-2003 08:55 PM

This is Gimli singing In Moria, in Kazad-dum.

Firondoiel 03-31-2003 02:01 PM

Ya got it!

alaklondewen 03-31-2003 04:04 PM

Great!

deep they delved us,
fair they wrought us,
high they builded us;
but they are gone.

Narduewen 03-31-2003 04:23 PM

I think thats from the Hobbit.

alaklondewen 03-31-2003 04:24 PM

nope

Narduewen 03-31-2003 04:25 PM

It is part of the Riddle Game. Gollum said it.

alaklondewen 03-31-2003 06:50 PM

Still no, but keep trying.

Narduewen 03-31-2003 10:38 PM

It sounds so familier to me. I don't think it is in the lotr, because I have checked all of the poems and songs(I have them all marked). But I have only read a little in the Silmarillion and Unfinished tales. Hmmmm . . . I will just have to find it.

hobbitlass 04-01-2003 02:05 AM

It IS in LotR. The ground is singing/saying it about the elves that once lived there. Legolas heard it and told Aragorn and Gimli. That's all I remember off the top of my head.

alaklondewen 04-01-2003 04:14 PM

You are quite right, hobbitlass. It is the ground/rocks of Hollin. Legolas is the one who sings it. Please, carry on.

hobbitlass 04-05-2003 12:33 AM

Something sort of difficult.

Now call....,
'Come back..'!
Here at....,
His hands....

Narduewen 05-09-2003 04:12 PM

The second line does appear in one of Treebeard's songs.

Narduewen 06-22-2003 10:12 PM

It's been really long since anyone posted here, so I guess I will try to start it back up with a new song, These are all from the same song, but they might not be anywhere near each other,

Quote:

'...loud it cried,'
'...mantle white...'
'...come no word,'
'When golden...'

Narduewen 06-25-2003 09:27 PM

Need any hints?

TolkienGurl 07-07-2003 01:57 PM

Narduewen, yours is from The Song of Nimrodel which Legolas sang in FotR.

Hobbitlass, yours was so hard! The dwarves sang it in The Hobbit (Chapter XV) about Thorin. Here is the whole verse of that song:

Now call we over mountains cold,
"Come back unto the caverns old!"
Here at the Gates the king awaits,
His hands are rich with gems and gold.

Narduewen 07-08-2003 07:40 PM

That is correct for my song. You may proceed with the next quote.

TolkienGurl 07-08-2003 10:46 PM

Thank you, Narduewen.

Here is the next quote!

Quote:

Or there maybe...
and swaying...
the Elven-stars...
amid their...

I hope this one isn't too easy.

Guinevere 07-09-2003 07:47 AM

I can't resist answering that one - it's one of my favourites...
It's part of Sam's song in the tower of Cirith Ungol
Quote:

In western lands beneath the sun
The flowers may rise in spring
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

TolkienGurl 07-09-2003 03:10 PM

Yes! Good job, Guinevere. That is also one of my favorites.

'Tis your turn.
