What is the star of the North?

If that would give it away, just ignore me.

Check the Riddle ME this -thread for the answer (the last post at the moment), there it's described quite well.

Tar-Palantir 02-28-2003 06:18 PM

All of the Items were kept in Imladris, except for the Elfstone (given by Galadriel).

Annunfuiniel 03-01-2003 12:35 AM

You're getting pretty close!

Gil-Galad 03-03-2003 07:16 PM

any pther guesses? if not annunfiniel gets to go again

Rochelle 03-03-2003 07:49 PM

I'm going to say Star of the North because it was not given to Aragorn II?

Annunfuiniel 03-04-2003 12:36 AM

Ok, I'll give it to Tar-Palantir 'cause he got the right item. The others were items Aragorn had a hereditary right to exept Elfstone which was given to him by Galadriel (obviously it became a heirloom but wasn't that for Aragorn).
Hope that clears it up!
Carry on, T-P!

Tar-Palantir 03-04-2003 02:30 AM

why thank you - that was a tough one! I already know this one has beings in addition to items, but I think you can handle it.

Belthronding
Mirror of Galadriel
Shadowfax
Ilúvatar
The One Ring

good luck players!

Valórin 03-04-2003 02:41 AM

Possibably the Mirror Of Galadriel because it is the only one on the list that isnt one thing. It is water in a dish with magical properties. The others are actual things: Ring, Horse, Spirit(Eru), and a Bow...

lathspell 03-04-2003 05:50 AM

I thought this was 'odd item out. I don't regard Shadowfax or Iluvatar as items, but maybe people disagree.

lathspell

Tar-Palantir 03-04-2003 01:46 PM

I thought I explained that, I will concede though I find it silly.

Elven cloaks
Three strands of hair
Golden belt
A Phial
Box of dirt
Elfstone
Mirror of Galadriel

[ March 04, 2003: Message edited by: Tar-Palantir ]

The Saucepan Man 03-04-2003 03:22 PM

The Mirror of Galadriel. It is the only one that was not a gift to others from Galadriel/her people.

Btw, what was the answer to the disallowed one?

[ March 04, 2003: Message edited by: The Saucepan Man ]

Tar-Palantir 03-04-2003 03:53 PM

You are correct TheSaucepanMan.

The answer to the other one was that they all had but one master, except Eru who had no master. I thought it was a neat one.

Valórin 03-05-2003 12:28 AM

Yes, very nice... Although it was a bit silly to ignore one just becuase its slightly modified from the topic...

The Saucepan Man 03-05-2003 07:51 AM

Here's the next list:

Palantir of Orthanc
Athelas
Pipe
Elven Brooch
Corsair's Boat

lathspell 03-05-2003 11:15 AM

Corsair's Boat, all the others have been in the hands of Aragorn

Annunfuiniel 03-05-2003 11:33 AM

Pipe? All others were useful to Aragorn during the War of the Rings but his pipe was just something he had for amusement.

Gil-Galad 03-05-2003 05:08 PM

Corsairs boat was made for evil purposes the rest were good or gifts

The Saucepan Man 03-05-2003 08:38 PM

Annunfuiniel has it.

All of them were used by, and useful to, Aragorn in the War of the Ring. The pipe was used by him, but played no specific role in the Quest of the Ring and the battle to defeat Sauron.

Annunfuiniel 03-07-2003 01:42 AM

Yeah! Ok, here's the next list of items:

Glamdring
Gúthwinë
Narsil
Orcrist
Sting

Estanesse 03-07-2003 02:45 AM

Narsil because it was forged by a dwarf all the others are forged by an elf.

[ March 07, 2003: Message edited by: Estanesse ]

Annunfuiniel 03-07-2003 03:28 AM

Maybe so (I can't be sure about Gúthwinë, was it forged by elves?), but that's not the answer I'm looking for...

Valórin 03-07-2003 05:04 AM

Sting - Bilbo game it that name, while the others gained their names from their creators/forgers.

lathspell 03-08-2003 10:00 PM

Orcrist is the only one that was worn by immortal and mortal folk. Once it belonged to the Elves of Gondolin, later to the Trolls, and after that to Thorin Oakenshield.

Annunfuiniel 03-09-2003 12:54 AM

No right answer yet...
I think that Sting was also borne by both immortal and mortal subjects.
Hint: think about their qualities

Tar-Palantir 03-09-2003 01:16 AM

Sting is just a knife?

Or is it that Gúthwinë was standard issue grade and the others were all special/magical?

[ March 09, 2003: Message edited by: Tar-Palantir ]

Annunfuiniel 03-09-2003 01:30 AM

Yes, finally! All the others had blades that gleamed or glowed or shimmered or whatsoever in a "magical" way but Gúthwinë was just an ordinary sword, no magic there.
Well done T-P (may I call you that? ), please go on.

lathspell 03-09-2003 09:05 AM

Did Narsil do that stuff as well?

Estanesse 03-09-2003 09:23 AM

No, because it was not a sword made by elves but dwarves. Only elf swords made in Gondolin glowed. But I think the answer is still correct because Gúthwinë was the only sword who had nothing magical.

Annunfuiniel 03-09-2003 09:51 AM

Yes, I believe it did based on the following description (from the Silmarillion):
Quote:

...and the sword of Elendil filled Orcs and Men with fear, for it shone with the light of the sun and of the moon, and it was named Narsil.
Narsil lost its glow when it was broken but gained it back after being re-forged to Anduril. That's at least how I have come to know it.

Tar-Palantir 03-09-2003 11:47 AM

There is another instance also where it is described as shining with a white light (or something similar) when Aragorn wielded it.

Eärrámë
Númerrámar
Vingilot
White Ship

bon voyage players.

Gil-Galad 03-09-2003 01:38 PM

VIngilot becasue it went up to the Skys and was shinign with a Silmaril

Tar-Palantir 03-09-2003 03:30 PM

Nope, nothing to do with flying or sinking.

Faenaduial 03-09-2003 05:03 PM

Numerramar. It sailed to Middle Earth, the others sailed out of Middle Earth.

Tar-Palantir 03-09-2003 05:46 PM

Hey good job, I guess I'll have to start making them really hard.

your turn Faenaduial.

Faenaduial 03-09-2003 09:38 PM

Thanks,

mallos
elanor
aeglos
alfirin

Estanesse 03-10-2003 03:43 AM

aeglos
Because it's the only white flower
all the others are golden flowers

lathspell 03-10-2003 05:39 AM

Aeglos - A weapon was also named so.

Elanor - Sam's daughter was named likewise.

Faenaduial 03-10-2003 08:49 AM

Estanesse, you are correct.

Your turn.

Estanesse 03-10-2003 12:34 PM

Thanks

shield
lance
Knife
sword
