Terrible curse makes me think of Noldor... Still, oldest and strongest... Treebeard?

Fingolfin II 10-30-2004 07:33 PM

Keep thinking of the Noldor ;).

luthien-elvenprincess 10-31-2004 07:40 AM

Galadriel?

Fingolfin II 11-01-2004 12:27 AM

Nope. Keep trying :).

Rimbaud 11-04-2004 08:35 AM

Fëanor?

Fingolfin II 11-04-2004 05:39 PM

Hmm....it was Maedhros but I realised the same thing could apply to Feanor too, so it would be awfully pedantic for me to deny you the thread....*evil grin*. You're up :).

Rimbaud 11-18-2004 09:45 AM

Righto

Judas to oath lords
Follower of the fourth son
He sounds swift, but who?

NightKnight 11-19-2004 01:02 PM

Ulfast?

Rimbaud 11-21-2004 06:53 AM

Quite correct, well done. All yours!

Rimbaud 11-23-2004 10:54 AM

Lifted

The riddler's riddle deriddled let's riddle another riddle, eh.

NightKnight 11-28-2004 11:36 AM

Eh... That was too riddling for me. ;)

Another riddle, yes.

The greatest challenge
By the high king of noldor
Against a dark king

I know it's too easy, but I'm tired.

Evisse the Blue 11-30-2004 08:01 AM

Finrod?

NightKnight 12-04-2004 03:54 PM

Nope.

Fingolfin II 12-04-2004 06:13 PM

Myself (Fingolfin)? :)

NightKnight 12-05-2004 02:16 PM

Of course.

Fingolfin II 01-02-2005 10:10 PM

Sorry for the slow response, forgot about this thread:

Melted in the Fire,
Corrupter of the mighty,
Item of desire.

Evisse the Blue 01-03-2005 01:30 PM

The One Ring?

Fingolfin II 01-03-2005 06:25 PM

Yep.

Evisse the Blue 01-04-2005 07:13 AM

Ok for this you'll also have to say the situation. :)

As the First Elves once
Beheld the land of Arda,
So they looked around.

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-04-2005 10:35 AM

The awakening of the firstborn (Elves) at Cuivienen.

Evisse the Blue 01-04-2005 02:49 PM

Nope. The event is said to be similar to that one, but it's not it.

(btw, cute avvie you got :D )

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-05-2005 02:37 PM

Thank you!

The return of the Noldor to Middle-Earth?

Evisse the Blue 01-05-2005 03:03 PM

Nope.
Hint: check LOTR. The persons in questions are likened to the 'first Elves awaking...'

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-05-2005 03:13 PM

I'm sorry if i'm such a failure but I lent out my copy of LOTR to a friend, so I'm guessing now.

The fellowship looking at Moria, specifically Dwarrowdelf? (The big city)

Evisse the Blue 01-05-2005 03:53 PM

Nope!

Another hint: it's in TTT

Evisse the Blue 01-19-2005 07:13 AM

up, thread!

Big hint: It happens near a forest.

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-19-2005 09:54 AM

Merry pippin and fangorn?

Evisse the Blue 01-19-2005 03:39 PM

Exactly! :)

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-19-2005 04:28 PM

Oh my gosh I finally got it! Took me long enough... you know the ironic thing about that is that was one of my first guesses but I didn't think it was right so I didn't put it! Hmmm... that means I have to write a haiku...

Shining as sunlight,
and with the light of the stars,
now kept in the deep

Hope it's not too confusing!

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-24-2005 07:20 PM

reviving quiz threads...

hello?? Anybody?

Shelob 01-24-2005 09:21 PM

I've got it...

I know it, and I didn't think it was too confusing.

It's the Arkenstone

"It was like a globe with a thousand faces; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon!" (The Hobbit, Chapter XII Inside Information)

so it is "Shining as sunlight,/and with the light of the stars,"
and

"They buried Thorin deep beneath the Mountain, and Bard laid the Arkenstone upon his breast." (The Hobbit, Chapter XVIII The Return Journey)

so that it's "now kept in the deep"

hmm...I guess this means I've got to come up with a Haiku...give me a day or so, I'll have one by then.

Many Thanks.

Shelob 01-25-2005 04:54 AM

hmm..

On second thought I guess it was rather hasty to assume I'm right. Sorry about that, it just seemed so clear that doubt (and common sense) couldn't make themselves heared over "Eurika!".

I apologise for assuming myself correct, and I'll wait for you to respond.

Many Thanks

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-25-2005 07:48 AM

Well you're right, go ahead Shelob the thread is yours.

Shelob 01-25-2005 04:23 PM

Alrighty then...

Thanks.

Well...keeping with the string of potentially confusing Haikus, I feel this one to be a bit criptic...the only clue I feel I should give is that a lot of the phrases come straight from the book.

Gnawed, maimed, mocked are you
By the violent maggot-folk
As day sinks you rise

Good Luck!

Keeper of Dol Guldur 01-25-2005 04:26 PM

Re:

Could it be a Troll?

Shelob 01-25-2005 05:03 PM

Sorry, but it's not a troll.

Keep Guessing.

Shelob 01-30-2005 12:36 PM

hello...*echo* 'ello...*echo* 'lo...

It's been almost five days and no more guesses.

Do you guys want a clue? Because if you want one just ask, I'll gladly give you it.

Evisse the Blue 01-31-2005 07:03 AM

A red sun rises...

The Sun? That's probably not it though, so I asks for a hint. And if that isn't nice enough I begs. :D

Shelob 01-31-2005 02:30 PM

A hint

No need to beg, but it makes me feel powerful :D

Alright for I hint I'll tell you that it A) the first two lines refer to an object B) the third line refers to an event (yes you probably could guess this...but still) and C) both are known/associated with a place

It may not help a lot...but the three (object, event, place) are so usually spoken of as one that they're almost indistinguishable from each other...so if you hear the place name you'll probably immediately think of the object and event and likewise should you hear of the object or event.

Perhaps this:

The old king statue, its severed head crowned with flowers . . .

Quote:

Standing there for a moment filled with dread Frodo became aware that a light was shining; he saw it glowing on Sam's face beside him. Turning towards it, he saw, beyond an arch of boughs, the road to Osgiliath running almost as straight, as a stretched ribbon down, down, into the West. There, far away beyond sad Gondor now overwhelmed in shade, the Sun was sinking, finding at last the hem of the great slow-rolling pall of cloud, and falling in an ominous fire towards the yet unsullied sea. The brief glow fell upon a huge sitting figure, still and solemn as the great stone kings at Argonath. The years had gnawed it, and violent hands had maimed it. Its head was gone, and in its place was set in mockery a round, rough-hewn stone, rudely painted by savage hands in the likeness of a grinning face with one large red eye in the midst of its forehead. Upon its knees and mighty chair, and all about the pedestal, were idle scrawls mixed with the foul symbols that the maggot-folk of Mordor used.

Suddenly, caught by the level beams, Frodo saw the old king's head: it was lying rolled away by the roadside. 'Look, Sam!' he cried, startled into speech. 'Look! The king has got a crown again!'
