NightKnight 03-18-2004 12:33 PM

Bregolas was Beren's uncle, not his grandfather.

symestreem 03-18-2004 03:04 PM

NightKnight, you're right. I don't know how I missed that.
Despite my stupidity, Nilpaurion got it. Pray continue.

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-20-2004 02:47 AM

I'm having trouble...

So would you mind waiting for my next puzzle? :)

NightKnight 03-20-2004 04:04 AM

No problem, but we expect a real masterpiece. ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-22-2004 08:01 PM

A masterpiece? *gulp*

Here is my puzzle.
Prepare to be...well, not masterpiecified.

1/(Name for two old Elves, and new Wild Men) + (Sindarin for waters below the priest - (dead laughter - (Culúrien's epessë - (33rd tengwa + chorus of creation - (holy one + beside the Lonely Mountain))))) = a treacherous lover.

1/something = gnihtemos. Get it?

EDIT: Too many things wrong.

symestreem 03-23-2004 07:15 PM

33rd tehta ?

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-24-2004 12:48 AM

Hehe...

Sorry. Edited.

Finwe 03-24-2004 09:50 AM

Firing away from the cannon...

Could it be Maeglin?

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-25-2004 07:20 PM

Your cannon needs better fire-control...

It just missed... :)

Shout for hints...or confusing elements - like symestreem did. ;)

symestreem 03-27-2004 03:36 PM

Is "Sindarin for waters below the priest" a cryptic clue?
And
did it say "wasters below the priest" before, or am I losing my mind (more)?

Arithmetic question:
Does
1/(Name for two old elves, and new Wild Men) mean
(1/Name for two old elves) + (1/New Wild Men), (1/[Name for two old elves + new Wild Men]), are the elves and the Wild Men the same answer, or am I totally missing the point?

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-28-2004 07:43 PM

Edited that. And yea, verily 'tis cryptic.

1/(Name for two old elves, and new Wild Men)
There are two "old" - note the quotation marks; they're not old due to age - Elves, and "new" Wild Men, that share a single name.

Hope that cleared things up. :)

Nilpaurion Felagund 03-31-2004 09:52 PM

Anyone, please?

The Perky Ent 04-03-2004 10:08 AM

It is sooo obvious! I can't believe you didn't get it! It is obviously....hint?

Finwe 04-03-2004 11:07 AM

Gorlim? Sauron?

symestreem 04-04-2004 06:21 PM

Lomion?

Nilpaurion Felagund 04-04-2004 09:40 PM

Let's set a few things straight here...

1. If you give an answer, all variables in the equation must be given their value.

2. "a treacherous lover" is not evil.

3. "old" and "new" has something to do with BoLT and the rest of the canon.

There, Perks! Two hints.

And as for all your guesses... :p

Nilpaurion Felagund 04-25-2004 07:18 PM

Please, please, please!

Somebody guess!!!

I'm begging you!!!

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-05-2004 03:26 AM

Hi!

I just want this thread resuscitated.

Reposting question:

1/(Name for two old Elves, and new Wild Men) + (Sindarin for waters below the priest - (dead laughter - (Culúrien's epessë - 33rd tengwa - (chorus of creation - holy one - beside the Lonely Mountain)))) = a treacherous lover.

Note: I just modified it a bit to remove a set of parentheses, and to lessen confusion. But it still yields the same result.

Now, anyone?

NightKnight 11-05-2004 03:51 PM

Hmm, I got the last part.

"(chorus of creation - holy one - beside the Lonely Mountain)"

Ainulindale - Ainu - Dale = Lin

I can't really find the epesse of Culurien/Laurelin, since I can't find one with an H in it... Oh well. Hope this helps someone.

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-08-2004 09:23 PM

Nk,

Culúrien's epesse is Laurelin!

I'll give away one more clue . . .

Name for two old Elves, and new Wild Men is Rog. Hope that helps . . .

NightKnight 11-09-2004 12:06 PM

But isn't the 33rd tengwa H?

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-10-2004 12:41 AM

Mr. Nightknight:

I was referring to the name of the 33rd tengwa. ;)

Evisse the Blue 11-10-2004 09:50 AM

The name of the 33rd letter (h) is hyarmen. Is this the one you had in mind?
Is 'dead laughter' Lalaith?
This is one tough riddle. Me very confused...

Nilpaurion Felagund 11-10-2004 06:12 PM

Aaaaah!!!

It should have been "36th tengwa", not "33rd". Major syntax error.

And yes, Ms. Evisse, Lalaith is the "dead laugher".

Urwen 03-16-2010 07:44 AM

I know it! Gorlim!

I think you're right, Urwen– if I understand how these puzzles work, which I'm not sure I do.

The question is, does Nilp himself remember what the answer was, after all this time?

Galadriel55 09-01-2011 08:24 AM

I like rebuses, so I attempted this.

([named by shapeshifter] - [elvish noble] - stone) + ([where an unlikely pair ended their days] - island - g) + ([a jolly dancer] - [and anon]) + ([elvish winter] - ([blue water!?] - blue - R2)) + ([quenya for a hidden rock] - action! - song) = between a great one and an iron one in days past

Pitchwife 09-11-2011 04:33 PM

Kicking a spambot off the main page:

([named by shapeshifter] - [elvish noble] - stone)
Carrock - ar - rock = C

([where an unlikely pair ended their days] - island - g)
Tol Galen - tol - g = alen

([a jolly dancer] - [and anon])
(no idea)

([elvish winter] - ([blue water!?] - blue - R2))
(no idea; 'winter' in Elvish would be Q hrívë, S rhîw IIRC, and 'blue water' something like luinen, but what do droids have to do with either?)

([quenya for a hidden rock] - action! - song)
Gondolin* - go! - lin = ndo

= between a great one and an iron one in days past

= Calen - ? - ? - ndo?
__________________________________________________ __

*but I think that's actually Sindarin, and Q would be Ondolindë.

Galadriel55 09-11-2011 04:46 PM

Woohoo!!! I get to tell what's right and what's not! :D

That's correct!

"Water" is not the best description, but it would have been way too easy if I was clearer... You're correct with hrive.

Yes, it's Ondolinde in Q. Try working with that.

Pitchwife 09-20-2011 07:42 AM

Methinks me gots it!

(... and I get to kick another spambot. Hooray!)

([named by shapeshifter] - [elvish noble] - stone)
Carrock - ar - rock = C

([where an unlikely pair ended their days] - island - g)
Tol Galen - tol - g = alen

([a jolly dancer] - [and anon])
Everard - ever = ard

([elvish winter] - ([blue water!?] - blue - R2))
hrívë - (river - r2) = h

([quenya for a hidden rock] - action! - song)
Ondolindë - do - lindë = on

= between a great one and an iron one in days past

= Calenardhon!
(between the Great River = Anduin and the Iron River = Angren, I suppose)

Galadriel55 09-20-2011 06:27 PM

Methinks you got it too!

Your turn! :D
