Now Diamond, did you even read the post I explained why dragons don't fly? Just think of it, have you ever seen a single picture of a dragon that could really fly? Unless it looks like some real animal, a bird or a bat... But that's not how dragons are described. Is it? And in the end, it was meant as joke...

Actually, of the contestants left, I think Gimli should win.

He already won...

I want dragons around more than I want eagles around, and both more than dwarves. Be that as it may....

Don't show your ignorance. Either listen to those who know or read about him yourself and make up your own mind.

Well, some of us have read about Chrys. Both Tolkien's version and the REB version. It is charicatures who can best be parodied, as Kuru so ably demonstrated, so enough of this noble character stuff, complex and fascinating.

Besides, I cannot decide who is more boring--Elbereth or Thorondor. ;)

Funny that one will have to purposefully "flame" a discussion here... But yes, it's looking much better now. For days and days we have just voted with all kinds of reasons and basically nonsensical-reasons. Firefoot made the case perfectly in saying:
Quote:

And I fail to see how "I've never heard of them" is a worse argument than "his name sounds funny," "just to save a different character," or the like.
Some people have tried to ignite the discussion to no avail. We have just sported a sentence in passing and voted, mainly on the same character daily (just a couple of interesting ties or "near cases").

So yes, let's keep up with this intensity, and make it better! Reasoning, argumenting, overdoing things and seeing if the others will note... That's more a game. :rolleyes:

PS. It's been years since I've read the Farmer Giles of Ham. But already now, with the help of some of the arguments made here, I've noticed myself thinking whether I should read it again. If that is not the noble "sub-raison d'etrê" for this kind of a game, then what is? :)

+ + Thorondor

It's time for the big guy to fly away.

mormegil 09-01-2006 12:31 PM

Voting is over.

Thorondor - 12
Chrysophylax Dives - 7
Gimli - 1
Smaug - 1

As the end of the day approached Gimli and the two dragons began to get rather hungry and proposed and idea to their companions. Elbereth was revolted and Thorondor petrified but before Throndor could escape and Elbereth complain the had captured Throrondor and defeathered the fine eagle. The last thing he ever heard was Gimli saying "I hope he tastes like chicken"

Remaining contestants:

From the Lord of the Rings Survivor
Gimli

From the Silmarillion Survivor
Elbereth

From the Hobbit Survivor
Smaug

From the Second Age Survivor

From the Minor Works Survivor
Chrysophylax Dives

New day begin voting. This is the final four!

Meneltarmacil 09-01-2006 12:36 PM

I'm willing to vote for either Gimli or Elbereth today. I'd like to see a Dragon win this game.

Just waiting for a good bandwagon to join...

Short people got
No reason.

Short people got NO, NO reason to live.

mormegil 09-01-2006 01:10 PM

++Elbereth

She has had absolutely no trouble up to this point. Plus since there aren't any elves or even Thorondor to adore her she has become bitter and nasty.

Meneltarmacil 09-01-2006 01:32 PM

Yeah, I think Elbereth should go. I mean, look at it.

Smaug: Evil.

Gimli: Much more into Aulë.

Chrysophylax: Probably not even from the same universe.

++Elbereth

Gil-Galad 09-01-2006 01:44 PM

now you vote her...

Glad I could help.

++ Elbereth

Does she ever really do...anything? I think she may hold the record for being the most inactive of the Valar. Manwe at least tried to do things every so often. Tulkas liked laying the smack down on things. Aule did stuff. Orome did stuff. Namo scared everybody silly. Elbereth is just sort of...there.

littlemanpoet 09-01-2006 03:16 PM

++ Gimli

Same reason.

Macalaure 09-01-2006 03:24 PM

Now, slowly there!

Most inactive of the Valar? Why then did the Elves, and every Man who had some sense, adore her and, more importantly, call upon her name when in peril - and, if I may add, successfully so?
Things don't always come with a bang...

Varda made Sam able to wipe the floor with Shelob. She could make Gimli wipe the floor with both Chrysophylax and Smaug. (After which Gimli will leave the victory to her for three locks of her hair)

She had no troubles so far, and I thought this was a very wise decision by everybody. However, you all seem to suddenly have fallen to the folly of wanting a dragon to win.

Firefoot 09-01-2006 03:25 PM

++Chrysophylax

Two dragons in the final three? Nah...

Bêthberry 09-01-2006 04:16 PM

It might be fun to see who goes down in a dragon showdown.

I bet they call upon Mommy too and with as much if not more success. C'mon. What would be more cruel than to leave her the survivor but with no one around to worship her?

I won't be around this weekend, so I'll miss the big finale. Have fun! It's been a blast. Thanks, Wilwa for moderating the game and morm for helping out.

I was talking in general, not about Lake Town. Also, Smaug's death was HIGHLY situational. He still destroyed Lake Town in his death and doomed any poor people still in the city regardless.

++Chrysophylax Dives. As stated, he is a smug Dark Age guy who won't share with the common folk, he has a Kevin Bacon factor to Puff the Magic Dragon, and finally, he really doesn't count as a dragon. Sure, dragons have been stereotyped, but the stereotype is basically the guidelines for dragons. Be Menacing, destroy towns, have pride in your race. Smaug fits those, while Chrys isn't menacing, doesn't destroy towns, and lacks the determined pride in his race. He's like a Sith Lord who doesn't act like a sith lord. That's messed up, and is negative to the balance of the world. (He also doesn't have any chance of a cool intro.)

Eagles are the good flying folk; dragons are the opposite. Such treason to one's race is unworthy of a championship.

(Hey guys, it would be pretty lame to have two dragons in the finale. Smaug is the better of the two, and it would make a good Dwarf/Dragon showdown if Elberth went off soon after.)

Celuien 09-01-2006 05:38 PM

How can you vote for Elbereth, Varda, Tintalle? Most beloved of the Elves, who kindled the stars in the sky? For shame!

I actually don't much care this round...I could go for Gimli or Elbereth. If it ends up close between those two & Chrys isn't going to be voted out then I'll probably switch my vote to one of them...

Compared to two dragons and a goddess, well... he just doesn't compare.

Volo 09-02-2006 01:20 AM

++Smaug

He made a fool of himself in the most unbelievable way. Lives for ages and then gets shot because a hobbit stole one of his golden mugs... Now that isn't something dragons do. Smaug is an example what dragons shouldn't be.

Nogrod 09-02-2006 01:30 AM

Sadly I'm in a hurry, so only a vote at this point...

The problem is that nobody goes down after this. It's the final three and we vote for who we want to win. It will be Elbereth and two dragons if Gimli goes. If Elbereth goes it's Gimli and two dragons. If Elbereth is here I can tell you who will win.... :( :mad:

I can't see why Elbereth should win, or even sweep, the final. To me it currently very much looks like Smaug, the little-dwarves-and-hobbits-scaring, war-of-wrath-deserting, can't-survive-three-chapters sorry-excuse-of-a dragon, is going to win.

I've read defenses of Smaug, of Elbereth, of Chrys... the only one I haven't read one of is Gimli. How did he get this far if no one actually cares about him? With all objectivity: He simply doesn't deserve to be in the final three.

++Gimli

wilwarin538 09-02-2006 11:57 AM

The votes at the end of the day are:

Gimli - 10
Elbereth - 4
Chrysophylax Dives - 5
Smaug - 1

Gimli is our finale character to be cast off the island. Since he was so upset that Smaug made it farther then him in the game, Gimli tried to attack him, but Smaug
had secretly hiered some bodyguards, who were able to fight off the insane dwarf.

Thus ends this day.

Your finale three are:

Elbereth from the Silmarillion tribe, Smaug from the Hobbit tribe and Chrysophylax Dives from the Minor Works tribe.

Everyone may now PM me the name of the character who they think should win. Please don't post in the thread, I don't want bandwagoning in this, I want everyone to just choose who they think deserves the title of All Star Survivor. I will check my PMs often so it shouldn't get full.

I will announce the winner in about 24 hours.

You may now start PMing!

wilwarin538 09-03-2006 11:45 AM

All the members of the Downs gathered excitedly into the Survivor stadium, waiting for the results of the votes, and the announcement of the All Star Survivor.

As everyone took their seats Wilwarin walked to the middle of the stadium, the finale three, Chrysophylax Dives, Elbereth and Smaug were standing behind her.

“First I would like to thank all those who participated in the game, I had a lot of fun, and I hope you did to. I would also like to thank Mormegil who covered for me a few times, it was much appreciated.” She paused. “So lets get to this. Now, there was a tie. Elbereth and Chrysophylax were tied with 6 votes each. But it is Smaug that is the winner with 7 votes!”

Smaug stood forward bowing to the crowd, as Elberth and Chrysophylax walked away slowly before being sucked into a black hole.

The crowd cheered happily, and unhappily for those that didn’t vote for Smaug , but most were happy. ;)

Thus ends Survivor All Star!

If I'd stayed with my original plan, I'd have voted for the winner. But it's more fitting this way, considering my record of Celeborn and Smith supporting. :D

I must admit, I'm not entirely dissatisfied with Smaug's victory.
