Evisse the Blue 01-31-2004 05:03 AM

He sought to wrench away my precious treasure
I sent him to his doom: measure for measure.
he lost yet won,
I gained naught, yet gave in
Pride and anger brought about my end
The ones most dear to me I lost
But this time to a friend.

Eorl of Rohan 01-31-2004 05:10 AM

Deagol first came to my mind, who found the ring and lost it to a friend, but then pride and anger does not fit.

Maybe precious treasure is a silmaril or Naugrafarig, not the one ring? I'd have to think about this one.

Precious ONES... MAybe it signifies Feanor? But then, Morgoth Bauglir was his greatest enemy, so the last line doesn't fit.

Thorongil 01-31-2004 05:22 AM

Maybe it was Thingol.

Beren wanted Luthien, his precious treasure.
He sent Beren to Angband
Beren lost his arm, but won Luthien
And his pride and anger made the Dwarves kill him.

I can't get the rest to fit in.

Denethor II, steward of gondor? maybe?

Evisse the Blue 02-03-2004 08:28 AM

Thingol it was.

. try it! not that hard at all - you got most of it already!

Thorongil 02-06-2004 03:33 AM

I still can't get it to fit, but here is the next one:

I have a bad reputation
And a hurting nose,
I'm not very friendly,
especially not with the husband of Rose.

Who am I?

Shouldn't be too difficult.

luthien-elvenprincess 02-06-2004 06:54 AM

It is Bill Ferny.
Sam hit him on the nose with an apple when the hobbits left Bree with Strider. Bill was a mean hombre

Thorongil 02-06-2004 07:09 AM

Yes, you couldn't exactly call him Mr. Nice guy...

YOur turn Luthien.

luthien-elvenprincess 02-06-2004 07:13 AM

This is probably pretty easy...but I'm still rubbing the sleep out of my eyes
Taking leave of elves
Four instead of two
Heavily burdened
Yet, I'm not depressed
Who Am I?

Elentarimir 02-06-2004 09:31 AM

Is it Frodo?

Taking leave of elves - Leaving Rivendell

Four instead of two - Merry and Pippin coming too, instead of just him and Sam?

Heavily burdened - He carries the weight of the ring.

Yet, I'm not depressed - He's happy to have his friends with him?

Arestevana 02-06-2004 09:44 AM

I will guess Bill the pony:

Taking leave of elves- he left Rivendell with the fellowship
Four instead of two- He has four legs instead of two
Heavily burdened
Yet, I'm not depressed-
Quote:

So Bill was going as the beast of burden, yet he was the only member of the Company who did not seem depressed.

luthien-elvenprincess 02-06-2004 05:07 PM

You are correct, Arestevana
Your turn.

Why is no one posting for the last few days?

That would be because I forgot, entirely, that I had posted on this thread. I am very sorry, everyone. Here is a new riddle.

I am the Silverlode, yet lack speech in wrath.
A chief of the East walks the edge in my path.
A craftsman am I, whose craft, in the West,
Was seen by one carrying a craft of my best,
This craft I had given, (this craft, one of three)
To a lord of the coast, who then gave it to he.
At the hand of a craftsman like myself I would die-
Yet his craft mocked my own, you must note. Who am I?

Estanesse 02-13-2004 07:18 AM

Are you Celebrimbor,

Celeb the Sindarin word for silver. The chief of the east is Sauron who later killed Celebrimbor, and mocked him by making the one ring.
Gandalf has seen his craft in the west ( ;) ) and is in posession of one of the three (Narya) given by Cirdan a lord of the coast.

Arestevana 02-14-2004 10:40 AM

Yes, I am! Correct on almost every point, Estanesse: Please continue. :)

For those who like to know these things, The first two lines were merely meant to be a cryptic clue to the name: Silverlode = Celebrant - (speech in wrath = rant) = celeb + (edge = rim) + (Cheif of the east = Bor) = Celebrimbor.

Estanesse 02-22-2004 01:21 PM

a new riddle

Thanks Arestevana :smokin: ,

Seven hundred and twenty legs against many,
Fearless we fight against Darkness
one of many in the days too come,
Six hundred and forty-two legs left the battleground victories,
I was left behind Afraid in darkness
with only the comfort of my legacy,
Bringer of speed for he who is in need
the lost who knows the way.

Gil-Galad 02-22-2004 05:29 PM

I haev big feeling its Gandalf, but i'm probaly wrong as usual...

NightKnight 02-22-2004 06:01 PM

Something with eored...not sure what though.

Estanesse 02-23-2004 07:25 AM

No sorry it isn’t Gandalf .
Hint: There are two straight clues, :smokin:

NightKnight aims his arrows in the right direction.

Finwe 02-23-2004 06:32 PM

Is it Theoden?

Arvedui III 02-23-2004 08:31 PM

Herm...Eomer, maybe?

Gil-Galad 02-24-2004 04:14 PM

Theodred? we could use a hint

Sleepy Ranger 02-25-2004 02:52 AM

Helm Hammerhand

Estanesse 02-26-2004 08:45 AM

No right answer yet but Arvedui is warm,
Hint: Look at the numbers

BTW: I would like the reason, it makes it easier to give a hint.

Sleepy Ranger 02-26-2004 10:08 AM

The numbers? Lets see. 720. Hmm. Has to do with Rohirrim. So there'd be horses. Now lets see. A horse has 4 legs a man has 2. Now lets see, A horse for every man. A total of 6 legs. 120. So that would be 60 men 60 horses. Then 642 left the battleground. So that gives 107. 53.5 Men and horses so making it even I'd say 54 men 53 horses. Then 78 legs died. 13 died. so 6 men and 7 horses. Now what do I do? Am I on the right track? Do any of these numbers actually mean something? :(

Arvedui III 02-26-2004 12:28 PM

Ack! Too many big numbers! The legacy bit makes me think of Eomund, though.

luthien-elvenprincess 02-27-2004 07:09 AM

I am stuck...here is what I have so far.

Eomer said he lost 15 men and 12 horses in the battle with the orcs beside Fangorn forest. This loss totals 78 legs. Seven hundred and twenty minus 78 equals the 642 legs that Estanesse said left the battleground victorious.
I can't figure out the 720 exactly though...Legalas sees 105 riders of Rohan coming in the distance and it is mentioned that there are 3 horseless riders (which matches perfectly with the fact of 15 men and 12 horses lost in battle). But 105 riders and 3 riderless horses equals 702 legs instead of 720. Possible typo, Estanesse??? I am at a loss to account for the extra 18 legs.

I have spun the rest of the riddle in so many ways trying to figure it out...I am dizzy. Another hint, please!;)

I am also thinking that one of the songs about the Rangers said something about 'The lost who knows the way'. But, I can't find it. Does this sound familiar to anyone???

Estanesse 02-27-2004 11:41 AM

There is no typo error :D.
120* 4= 480
120*2 = 240

equals 720

But I'm impressed good work. To find out who I'm isn’t so hard now :smokin:

Finwe 02-28-2004 04:44 PM

Theoden?

Arvedui III 02-28-2004 05:15 PM

Gah! I can't find this number nonsense anywhere. Time to guess.

Umm...Erkenbrand? Or Hama, maybe?

Nirvana II 02-28-2004 07:14 PM

im gonna say Theodred

cause no one has said that yet

Nirvana II:smokin:

Gil-Galad 02-28-2004 10:33 PM

Burninating the countryside

<--------------*bing bing bing* i said Theodred, if you scroll up...

Nirvana II 02-28-2004 10:46 PM

i feel kinda dumb when i do that....and is it...Eomund?

luthien-elvenprincess 02-29-2004 08:40 AM

Ack...I also am reduced to merely guessing...Merry or Pippen. I am too embarrassed to explain my line of thinking to bring me to these guesses...it is probably way stupid!

Gil-Galad 02-29-2004 09:59 AM

Sorry, but I said Eomund as well, if you'll scroll up...

Herm...I don't know. Eowyn? The left behind bit struck me as being her, but the rest of it doesn't make sense.

Estanesse 02-29-2004 01:40 PM

Quote:

Aragorn? because the lost who knows the way part was kidna like the Dead army of Dunharrow
No it has nothing to do with the Dead army of Dunharrow :smokin:

Hint: I'm( ;) )not a member of the royal family

Gil-Galad 02-29-2004 08:20 PM

but which royal family are you refering to?
