don't worry Rochelle, just a squirt of a water sprizter and some haunting will calm him down...

Finduilas 12-06-2004 10:13 AM

Hi, I'm new.... :D
Just needed a place to start posting, and thought this might be a good place. I'm a big fan (logically) and have been looking for good LoTRforums since the last I was a member of closed. This seems to be a great place, so I might pop in here from time to time.

Hugs

Gil-Galad 12-07-2004 06:28 PM

rutslegolas 12-08-2004 08:31 AM

Ah the little puns of Gil-Galad that make life on the Barrowdowns great .

Anyway's Welcome miller, Finduilas, and OldTomBombadil. May you enjoy deaths here as we do .

Ainaserkewen 12-08-2004 03:34 PM

Ever notice how no one says "enjoy being dead" anymore? I think that was my fault.

I was off doing the Anime/Manga forum thing for awhile there, but those forums get tiresome and though the material is constantly fresh, the people aren't as wonderful as they are here.

No where else is there such a strong bond between members, the maturity, the graceful ease from one thread to the next, THE LACK OF CHAT LINGO!!!
*glares at the phantom*
What are you trying to start here Oh Dark One?

The Saucepan Man 12-08-2004 05:23 PM

Seems that there's more welcomers than welcomed around here these days.

Which, I suppose, now includes me. Welcome to all the Newly Deceased! :)

Oh, and enjoy being dead. :D

Yes, Gil-Galad, you are useful.

Ahh, thank you. EDIT: And by thank you, I mean thanks for saying it, I know it wasn't directed at me, however I will enjoy it anyway.

Gil-Galad , can I just say how much I love your signature, I know this is neither the time or the place, but homestarruner fans are so few that it deserves to be noticed.

Newbies are fewer lately too, or is that just me? I haven't been around for awhile. It's funny, someone new replies here and everyone who frequently visits instantly befriends them, it's so loving...

Yay! I love it too! :D

Where are all the newbies? :(

the phantom 12-12-2004 02:03 PM

You people scared them all away.

Newbies are a bit like babies- this world (the Downs) is new and scary for them. You need to learn to be more gentle and nuturing like me.

:p

(unless they do something wrong- then you rip them to shreds)

No, phantom, I think that was you.....

Anyway, welcome to the seemingly non-existant newbies.

At least no one is forgetting the Decemberween joy... it has spread even to the downs...

Nimrodel_9 12-15-2004 06:12 PM

Gah! Still no newbies. Guess I`d better start dropping little slips of paper that say Do the wave for Boromir the Disco King!!! and my e-mail on them again... ;)

A_Brandybuck 12-16-2004 06:38 AM

OK, I am the first "newbie" for a long long time, I think. ;-)

I've seen this thread very late, but I will give you a short summary of my experiences with Tolkien.
My first experience with Tolkien was approx. 13 years ago with the sweet age of 10. As most of you (I assume) I started to read the other works concerning Middle-earth (a few times). Sadly I knew the English at this age as a not-native englishspeaker not very well, consequently I could read not all works from him. Only these, which were translated into my language (LotR, Hobbit, Sil, Unfinished Tales).
After a short break and some experiences with other Fantasy-novels and their own worlds, I have returned ruefully back to Tolkien with the insight, that these works don't have the depth of Middle-earth (resp. Arda ;-) ).
To my surprise I explored that my english-skills have been risen, so I could read all his works in the orginal.
After a short journey into the grammar of Quenya (and a shorter into Sindarin), I discovered the new world of HoME.
Because of very few time (being a student with children), I only read fragments of HoME. From all a bit, but not a whole book.
Now, I am hoping for good discussions. :-)
'Brandybuck

Ainaserkewen 12-16-2004 12:06 PM

A_Brandybuck, sounds like you know what you're doing. I look forward to seeing you in other threads.

My, my, my...there are a lot of Homestarrunner fans in here. If you don't know what we're talking about,

Thinlómien 12-17-2004 07:09 AM

Hello, everybody!

Hi, my name is Thinlómien (that's not, of course, my real name...). I´m a 14-year old (well, nearly 15) girl from Finland.
So if I write something strange, it may be because I'm not a native english-speaker... :)

I've been a LotR -fan since my father read it aloud to me and my little sister, when I was six years old. (I remember getting angry to my father, because he didn't read the chapter "The Voice of Saruman" to the end, but said "we´ll continue it tomorrow". I refused to go to my bed and declared, that I would read it myself, if my father didn´t read it aloud. My parents gave up and my father read it. So LotR was quite impressive to me, even then.)
By now I've read LotR 15 times, because I just love it. I've read all Tolkien's books concerning Arda, what have been translated into finnish (LotR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales).

I've also seen the movies. I have a hate-love -relationship with them. I like them very much, but in the other hand, I think they rape the book. Maybe it's the book behind them, what makes them so good. And I appreciate Peter Jackson; I can believe that the movies could have been much more horrible.
I'm a member of Finnish Tolkien Society and I play M.E.R.P. with my friends. I'm usually the GM and if the movies rape Middle-Earth, there's no word to what I do to it...

I live with my mom, liitle sister and tortoise in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. My hobbies are reading (mostly fantasy books), roleplaying, drawing, art club and playing kantele, the Finnish national instrument. I'm in a international school, in a half-english class.

And to the end I would like to tell that my favorite characters from LotR are Galadriel, Gandalf and Boromir.

Yes, all PJ had to do was add in a little scene with Arwen at Helm's Deep, that would have definately made TTT much worse :) .

That's an interesting story you have, welcome to the downs, hope I get to see some of your ideas on the many debated topics here. :)

Sapphire_Flame 12-17-2004 10:27 AM

Welcome A_Brandybuck, Mark of Cenla, and Thinlómien! *pokes the newbies* http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de//poke2.gif

elronds_daughter 12-17-2004 11:18 AM

Welcome to the 'Downs, Thinlómien! Your English sounds fine to me. It sounds better, actually, than some of the English I've been unfortunate enough to hear from native English-speakers. It's rather sad, really.

Gil-Galad 12-17-2004 03:55 PM

14-year old from Finland eh.... well i'm a 15 year-old (gasp) from Canada, i actually plan on travelling Europe in the upcoming years....don't mind me i'm just the pun-lord of the downs....that should so be my title!

Encaitare 12-17-2004 04:12 PM

Welcome, Thinlómien! :) Your English sounds great to me. In accord with what Lhunardawen said, it actually sounds better than some of what I hear on a daily basis.
