So do we. Cows outnumber people in my hometown. You should have seen the city kids I rode home with on break as we drove further away from "civilization". They were distraught to learn that hardly anybody has cable internet connections. They couldn't believe that you have to drive more than five minutes to go shopping anywhere. It was a hoot.

Mithalwen 10-23-2005 10:43 AM

Yes but some states do dwarf our green and pleasant land..... in area if not population....

Don't ask me - I really have no idea, because basically all the time I spend in New Jersey, I was bored. But still, good memories... (and I could see the Empire State Building from my bedroom window, which always temporarily made me forget I was in a suburb).

Thumbs up from the Dead Hand

I think this is entirely neccercery.

This website enables us to veiw a map (using Google Map or something like that) that has little pointy things that allow you to see where different forum members are if they wish to disclose this.
So, add yourselves and we can have a little collection.

Rune Son of Bjarne 10-25-2005 12:35 PM

you are absolutely correct Hoobill, how did we ever live without? :D

(The map only has one part of copenhagen and it is not the one i live in)

Hookbill the Goomba 10-25-2005 12:41 PM

That's the thing about these mapping programs. America and England are really detailed, but it seems that they regard the rest of the world as a barren wasteland. Why don't they just write "Here there be Dragons" and be done with it?

the guy who be short 10-25-2005 01:14 PM

The website keeps claiming that the major town I live in - con Airport, mind you - doesn't exist. So I tried a few nearby cities. They don't exist. So I tried London. It doesn't exist. So I tried England, which isn't a city anyway, before getting frustrated and deciding to try again later.

Other than that, jolly good show. :D

Hookbill the Goomba 10-25-2005 01:16 PM

Try "London, England (United Kingdom)" A list should appear as you type anyway.

Gothmog 10-25-2005 01:19 PM

Great Hookbill! I was second Downer on the map :D

And yeah, the people not living in USA or England seem forgotten. But I'm used to it. I'm impressed my town was even there! Usually Sweden is just that land in the Alps that makes great chocolat and watches. Or is that Switzerland? Well, who cares anyway... ;)

the guy who be short 10-25-2005 01:20 PM

Ah, it was merely a question of disabling my firewall.

wilwarin538 10-25-2005 01:56 PM

Cool, first girl on the map. :D Very cool idea Hookbill. ;)

Glirdan 10-25-2005 03:05 PM

Good idea Hookbill. Now you guys know how me and Wilwa know each other so well.

Hey Wilwa, we're the only Canadians on there so far, eh?

Gil-Galad 10-25-2005 06:09 PM

Correction Dear Glirdan, i have made the site famous by adding myself...

Celuien 10-25-2005 07:10 PM

Great idea! I'm on there now, all alone in the northeast US. :)

Hookbill the Goomba 10-27-2005 03:15 AM

*Shock* only three Britons! Come now, people! For King and country! :p
At least now we can see where the Down's members are concentrated. It seems mainly to be across the pond.

Wow, Lhunardawen, they really have your country detailed don't they? :D

Thinlómien 10-27-2005 06:20 AM

Absolutely great!

Though I'm Thinlómien there  Well, I suppose you still know me...

Gothmog 10-27-2005 06:35 AM

There's some sort of bug on the site! Sometimes small red pins appear totally out of place. I found myself and Hookbill freezing on the shores of Greenland a minute ago. And it doesn't end with a bad cold! We must have a severe case of split personalities too! We were both represented both in Greenland and our native country! Whoa, I've got more issues than I knew...

Hookbill the Goomba 10-27-2005 06:41 AM

The pins that appear usually near the top of the map (which sometimes is Greenland) is, I think, the last person you looked at.

The Saucepan Man 10-27-2005 06:53 AM

Nice idea, Hookbill. :)

There used to be a similar map somewhere on the Downs (there may even be a link back in the mists of this thread), but it only had a limited capacity. So, after a while, every time that someone added themselves, another disappeared. I hope it's not the same with this map.

A question before I add myself, as I plan on moving house soon. Can people edit their details or location once they have added themselves?

Also, I notice that zip codes can be entered for US addresses. I would counsel care in using this facility as I suspect that it may pinpoint locations with rather too much accuracy, given that the US and UK maps zoom down to street name level.

... which, incidentally, reveals that Hookbill lives in the middle of a river. :D

Sleepy Ranger 10-27-2005 06:56 AM

Yes I believe you can edit your location.
Also I do not live in Delhi in fact I have never lived in India my whole life but the evil map refuses to accept my current location. >:U

I agree with this sentiment. There's a reason I'm not on the map. I don't even carry a cell phone, that's how out-of-reach I like to remain. :) And much as I like the map, I'm quite content with people knowing only that I live in upstate NY.

It's actual rather nice! The fish are friendly! :D

The river marks the furthest boundary of Parbold village. So that’s where it shows the marker.

You can change any aspect of it! Area, avatar, shout out, whatever. But if you want to change your name ask me to delete you’re old name and you’ll have to start again.

Nope, that's not it. I haven't looked at my own pin since I created it and saw that it worked. Can it be the first pins created? Cuz I was second on the map and Hookbill, of course, was the first.

Hookbill the Goomba 10-27-2005 07:44 AM

That must be it. I always assumed it was the last one you looked at. Might be a glitch.

Estelyn Telcontar 10-27-2005 07:59 AM

The link to the map froze my PC, so I will not be looking at it nor entering my location. For those who do not remember, the pinhead on which I am dancing is in Germany...

Lalaith 10-27-2005 08:04 AM

I only found out quite recently about Madame Spawn's nationality, and I was quite awestruck...it's almost impossible to believe that she isn't a native English speaker.

She is very good in english it seems... I know she's Finnish (like me), but sometimes she makes me wonder where/how has she learned such fluent english... Maybe she'll pop up in this thread and inform us... :)

Feanor of the Peredhil 10-27-2005 08:39 AM

I can't help but to express my constant amazement and impressed feelings toward all of you who are bi- or multi-lingual. On a regular basis, you all seem to have better grammer and knowledge of more words than I do, and I've been speaking English since before I can remember, reading since before primary school, and writing soon after. My only foreign language is Spanish, and if I were a member of a Spanish speaking forum, I would be absolutely lost. Once again... amazing.

Tigerlily Gamgee 10-27-2005 09:56 AM

Oh, that map thing is neat! I have added myself :-)

Amanaduial the archer 10-27-2005 10:02 AM

Try it sometime. I go on a French speaking forum sometimes. Utterly bewildering experience.

...I didn't actually realise that; I just put down Manchester, United Kingdom, as it is the largest big city near me - and it seems to have just placed me pretty much wherever it liked. I shall now have to find out exactly where Slater Wharf, my apparent new home, actually is ;)

*blushes* Thank you so much for saying that! You know, I never studied for my English exams in high school because I had already learnt the difficult words and complex grammar structures here at Downs. You guys use so rich language that two years aback I was constantly browsing a dictionary while reading your posts.

To stay on topic: Great idea, Hookbill! It's nice to actually see, how far from each other everyone lives and yet we all flock here into the same Barrow (almost) every day.

wilwarin538 10-27-2005 01:45 PM

Its really strange this map thing. My little balloon is right in the middle of a forest. :D Plus, my brothers is on the opposite site of down, in the middle of one of our parks. Glirdan actually got a house. Though its very far from where he actually lives. ;)

Very cool Hookbill.

Hookbill the Goomba 10-27-2005 01:52 PM

Well, if nothing else, you get the general idea. But enough of this cat-like talking. We don't want to go to Mount Doom!

Glirdan 10-27-2005 02:08 PM

WOW!!!I don't live all the way over there!!! Sheez!!! And what's with Wilwa and Wayne not living in the same house?

Lalwendë 10-27-2005 03:03 PM

I might have to fiddle with the markers I've put on. It has me down as living in the proximity of Sheffield Uni's highly scary Arts Tower (which may double the value of my house...if only...), while it has davem down as living near the big tyre centre which backs onto the municipal tip. :p

Tis very distracting though, as I love maps!

The Saucepan Man 10-27-2005 06:04 PM

I was interested to see where my pin would fall on the map and, happily, it placed me astonishingly close to where I work. I am now resident in the very beautiful Church of St Brides, just off Fleet Street. :smokin:

Rimbaud 10-27-2005 06:22 PM

Didn't put me near work or home. I know a fine pub or seven around there though, and it's not too far from an old office of mine.

Amanaduial the archer 10-28-2005 05:05 AM

I'm close enough to the Bridgewater Hall and a little further from the BBC, which is where I 'work', you might say - I spend enough of my free time there anyway, that I do seem to live there sometimes. So I suppose the map wasn't too far off then...;)

Thinlómien 10-28-2005 08:08 AM

I think I've somehow 'swallowed' spawn. She used to be there on the map near my spot (Helsinki, Uusimaa, Finland) in (Espoo, Uusimaa, Finland), but after I put myself there, she's been lost - or at least I can't "find" her - can you?

Hookbill the Goomba 10-28-2005 08:14 AM

If you click on her icon on the right hand side, then it goes to her. I think since you are both in the same place it just goes alphabetically.
