His editor lived in Rivendell and it was getting way to expensive to ship that big ol' manuscript back and forth, so Bilbo moved there so it would be more convenient for everybody.
-------------------------------------
What was Bilbo's magnum opus?

(The Princess has a name? and, It's "Peach"? I had no idea.... :cool

(Hey, I made the 600th post on this thread! )

ElanorGamgee 06-11-2002 09:59 PM

He wrote a book for Hobbits who tended to spend a long time in the outhouse titled "Potty Ponderings with Bilbo Baggins" full of useless information and advice. It sold exactly 2 copies (Bilbo bought one and Sam bought on for the Gaffer).

Why don't Hobbits like to travel?

Brinniel 06-12-2002 12:01 AM

They tend to get car sick. Blech!

What happened to Boromir in the first chapter of TTT?

Thinhyandoiel 06-12-2002 12:47 AM

(Keeping with my Nintendo theme) He discovered a secret level that would lead him to one of the renowned Silmarils. Little did he know that Sauron (Bowser) was guarding it, but had conveniently placed bricks of gold in the air throughout the level. This way Boromir did not completely go away empty handed..oh wait, he ran out of lives and it was Game Over.
(And Princess Peach was named that only in the N64 versions, I think. Anyone's welcome to correct me, of course. I don't own the system or the game, (PS2 for me!) I just play my cousin's. In the earlier games, she was Princess Toadstool.)

Why did they shorted Meriadoc's name to Merry?

Brinniel 06-12-2002 01:07 AM

Merry had originally gone by the nickname, Doc, thinking it sounded more manly, but then other hobbits(especially Pippin) kept walking up to him with carrots and saying 'What's up, Doc.' So, Merry decided he was better off going by a girl's name than going by a bunny's.

What was Aragorn's sword called and why was it so special?

Susan Delgado 06-12-2002 02:06 AM

Aragorn's sword is named "Bob the Idiot Chopper"* and it chops idiots better than any weapon in the entire span of Middle Earth's history, although it will also chop non-idiots if you ask it really nicely.
-----------------------------------------
Name a few other special weapons.

*This is not my creation: I got it from Niphredil Baggins, who got it from someone else.

Ithaeliel 06-12-2002 08:36 PM

Gimli's specially made iron & lead frying pan was named Ix-nay on-ay e-thay orcs-ay.
Legolas's scotch-tape bow is named... oops, it fell apart again. Time to get a new one.
Boromir's go-gurt tube sword was named The Rock, after his hero.
Ithaeliel's violin is named Big Red (not after the gum!) because it's red. Hey, wait! That's not a weapon! NOOO! LEAVE BIG RED ALONE!!

Where, how and why did Aragorn die?

Why did Gimli want Galadriel's hair?

ElanorGamgee 06-13-2002 03:30 PM

The hair on the top of his head was starting to thin and he thought that some of Galadriel's hair would make a great toupe.

What did Frodo do at the Prancing Pony to keep Pippin from revealing his identity?

Alakwilaiel 06-13-2002 07:52 PM

He started loudly singing,"John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" "....everybody!'his name is my name too....!'"

Question: Where did Sam get Bill the pony?

[ June 13, 2002: Message edited by: Alakwilaiel ]

Thinhyandoiel 06-13-2002 08:11 PM

He won it from Aragorn after betting him that Frodo could speak Elvish. Aragorn also lost half of his sword to him (only half because Sam couldn't carry the whole thing.)

Q: Why did Haldir make the Fellowship go through the woods of Lothlorien blindfolded?

Brinniel 06-13-2002 09:25 PM

Other elves of Lothlorien were frolicking through the woods and cutting down tree branches to make their own forts. Haldir didn't want the Fellowship to see what damage those naughty elves were doing to the poor trees, especially Legolas.

Why are the spiders so insulted at being called Attercop?

[ June 14, 2002: Message edited by: Ithaeliel ]

Susan Delgado 06-15-2002 01:08 AM

Attercop was the name of one of their number who became great friends with the Elves and abandoned the Giant-Forest-Spider lifestyle.
(Why were they, really? What does Attercop mean?)

Why did the Dawarves stray off the path in Mirkwood?

Brinniel 06-15-2002 01:55 AM

They heard that a new inn and restaurant had opened up only a mile away and it happened to be located inside a cave.

Who was captured by the Uruk-Hai during the Breaking of the Fellowship and how did they escape?

Ithaeliel 06-15-2002 11:01 AM

Uh... that's a stumper.
Okay, it was Fatty Bolger who was captured, and he escaped when they went to a bag factory by jumping into an empty dog food bag (the owners of the bed & breakfast they were planning to stop at had HUGE dogs who ate more than any you've ever seen) and was thrown onto a truck. He woke up on the racks at your local Zamzows, and he wandered off to find the rest of the gang.

Why and how did Glorfindel slay a Balrog? Who was the Balrog?

[ June 15, 2002: Message edited by: Ithaeliel ]

Lush 06-15-2002 01:39 PM

The Balrog was slain by Glorfindel in a brawl at the local pub. The Balrog was, in fact, an inebriated American tourist with a visor and a map in the back pocket of his shorts, and he made the deadly blunder of insulting Glorfindel's "mum."

When and where was Sauron happiest?

Ithaeliel 06-15-2002 02:29 PM

Sauron was happiest on vacation to Valinor in 139869 in the 85th age, where he was waited on hand and foot by Valinorian maidservants in little black Gucci dresses and got to surf the wildest, hugest waves Ulmo could ever create. *Sigh* I'd be happy too.

Who was Ungoliant? How did he meet and become allies with Melkor?

[ June 15, 2002: Message edited by: Ithaeliel ]

Thinhyandoiel 06-15-2002 05:44 PM

Ungoliant was an old college buddy from back in the first age, when Melkor went to Valinor High, under the head principal Manwe.
(Side note, Ungoliant was a 'she')

Question:

Where did the light from the Silmarils originate from?

Gandalf_theGrey 06-15-2002 05:48 PM

The teensy-weensy spider went up the waterspout ...

No, seriously. See, Ungoliant was also called Scooby Doo, and Melkor was also known as Shaggy. The two of them figured the best way to solve a mystery was to pull a jewel heist themselves. Sadly, Ungoliant saw the silmarils as Scooby Snacks, and the rest is history. * solemn nod *

Edited Next Question:

Why do my posts to this thread always seem to cross with someone else's?

Gandalf the Grey

[ June 15, 2002: Message edited by: Gandalf_theGrey ]

Alakwilaiel 06-15-2002 07:03 PM

because you are responding to the questions on this forum both in this universe and in a parallel one, thus the person you are crossing posts with is yourself in a parallel universe. ( sounds kinda twilight zone-ish, but it was the best i came up with)
next question:
What is the real name of the actor who plays Legolas in the LOTR movie?

Question:
What are the names of the Three rings and what are their powers?

There's Larry with the power of Murphy's Law, Curly with the power of reverse psychology, and Moe with the power of bug repellent.

What is the name of the shipwright at the Grey Havens and what is special about him (compared with most other elves)?

Lómelindi 06-15-2002 10:43 PM

His name is Tátou, and unlike most elves, he is short and fat with a pudding-bowl haircut; he also has an annoying habit of running up and down the dock yelling, "Da ship! Da ship!"
---------------------------------------
Why is Pippin's accent so much more extreme than the other hobbits?
(I know Billy Boyd is Scottish, compared to Monaghan's Mid-English and Astin and Wood's faked generic British, but think of something funny.)

Lush 06-15-2002 10:50 PM

Pippin's accent is more extreme because he grew up in the projects.

Are Elrond and Arwen really from the line of Beren and Luthien, or do they just dye their hair?

Nevtalathiel 06-16-2002 11:00 AM

Well, Elrond and Arwen use the same line of beauty products as Beren and Luthien did, and "nine out of ten elves can't tell the difference".

Who made the silmarils and why?

Ithaeliel 06-16-2002 03:56 PM

How did Beren lose his hand?

He got it caught in a lathe (ouch!)
---------------------------------------------
Why is Aragorn so fond of his sword?

Gandalf_theGrey 06-16-2002 11:57 PM

Because Aragorn's discovered that if you stick that sword into an electrical outlet, it makes your hair go all frizzy and stand on end while a refreshing burst of energy flows all through you.

What do the Riders of Rohan ride?

Thinhyandoiel 06-17-2002 12:09 AM
