Tárafëaien 01-11-2004 09:02 PM

I'm going to guess Balin, but don't ask why, cause I'm none to sure.

Lalaith 01-12-2004 04:32 AM

Ok, I think a clue is in order...Unfinished Tales.

Gil-Galad 01-12-2004 07:41 AM

Aldarion? or Pharazon?

Lalaith 01-12-2004 09:45 AM

Another clue:

An angry dog did once me fright,
but I helped a kinswoman in her plight.

Gil-Galad 01-12-2004 05:16 PM

Beren? or Finrod?

Celegorm 01-12-2004 05:28 PM

Me? Celegorm?

-lost own hall, that's why living in Nargothrond
-honestly only wanted to help Luthien
-Huan -> bad dog
-Celebrimbor didn't come by leaving Nargothrond -> bad nephew

Lalaith 01-12-2004 05:30 PM

*tsk* Huan was a lovely dog.

No, I'm afraid none of those are right.

Gil-Galad 01-13-2004 04:23 PM

Maedhros?

Lalaith 01-13-2004 06:07 PM

No, sorry. Would you like another clue?

Elrond of Rivendell 01-13-2004 06:08 PM

Of course I would!

Lalaith 01-14-2004 04:33 AM

A small part I played in a tale of woe,
my kin was cursed, I wed my foe.

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 04:56 AM

I'm guessing Aerin.
She was an kinswoman of Hurin, whose family was cursed. She aided Morwen, another kinswoman. She was taken as wife by Brodda the Easterling. Her hall was burned down by Turin Turambar.

Lalaith 01-14-2004 06:34 AM

Quite correct!
It was actually she, not Turin, who set fire to her hall after Turin killed Brodda.
"Faint heart is yours...as it was when I called you aunt, and a rough dog frightened you," Turin told her, but afterwards he was rebuked by one of the other men, "she did much good among us at much cost."

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 09:33 AM

Thank you Lalaith.

Challenging I had been,
doomed I became,
buried I was,
till the Heir found me.

Did the Dead under the mountain say that? You know, where Aragorn calls them to rise up and fight for him to fufill their oath. Am I right?

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 09:59 AM

Oh you are so close. What I need is the name of one man in particular who lies under the mountain. But this won't be so difficult, as there are not many choices.
Good work so far, keep on.

King of the Dead

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 01:28 PM

Actually I wouldn't say that any of the host of the Dead was really "buried" under the Mountains; somehow they were still living when Aragorn meets them.
So you have to think of another character - The King of the Dead is wrong.

Greetings,
EfR

Kath 01-14-2004 03:16 PM

Ok well in the book there is a bit where they find a dead man lying by a door that he could not get through.
I can't remember exactly but was it maybe Beren?

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 03:59 PM

It is now the dead man by the door. This one is really "under the Mountain". As for the name of the doorkeeper, I don't know it either.

Greetings,
EfR

Gil-Galad 01-14-2004 04:22 PM

I was gonna say Durin's Bane

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 04:32 PM

No, the Paths of the Dead are quite the right track, but I still need a precise name.

Arvedui III 01-14-2004 06:04 PM

Wasn't Baldor of Rohan the man who entered the paths of dead and never came back, thereby making him the dead man at the door under the mountain?

Elrond of Rivendell 01-14-2004 06:11 PM

Baldor was not the dead man at the door, since his body was found only after 'time unreckoned had passed' since the Grey Company passed the door, but he is exactly what I have been looking for.
Good work, Arvedui. Your turn.
Greetings,
EfR

EDIT: addition

Arvedui III 01-16-2004 04:40 PM

Ah, I have to ask something now?!? Right, herm...

Alone I wandered under night,
My life was filled with dreadful plight,
I came into a blessed land,
And found a jewel,
a madien's hand.

Gil-Galad 01-16-2004 05:18 PM

Eol?

Elrond of Rivendell 01-16-2004 05:33 PM

Beren gaining a Silmaril and receiving Luthien's hand?

Arvedui III 01-16-2004 06:22 PM

Eol was a good guess, but Elrond has it. It was indeed Beren. Good job.

Elrond of Rivendell 01-16-2004 06:49 PM

Thank you Arvedui III. So here we go:

He who by my work can be heard,
fills hearts with joy - but mind!
never stays a longing despair behind.

Celegorm 01-19-2004 07:34 AM

Any hints?

(I can't remember someone creating a telephone. )

Gil-Galad 01-19-2004 07:49 AM

Illuvatar? or Tom Bombadil?

Samwise 01-19-2004 11:19 AM

Gandalf? (As usual, the simple-minded Hobbit has no clue...)

Elrond of Rivendell 01-19-2004 12:54 PM

It is none of your guesses.
Try to figure out what quite a lot of people (speaking of races, that is) are longing for.

Samwise 01-19-2004 01:16 PM

I still have no clue.

Cidran? (sp?)

Elrond of Rivendell 01-19-2004 03:13 PM

No, although Cirdan lived where the longing could be more easily satisfied than for example in Lothlorien.

EfR

Celegorm 01-19-2004 03:21 PM

Ulmo? The longing for the see?

Elrond of Rivendell 01-19-2004 03:54 PM

You come very close. But Ulmo = he in my riddle. You have to find out who I am.

EfR

Gil-Galad 01-19-2004 04:26 PM

Maglor? his singing brings delight but with despair of the silmarils is always with him

symestreem 01-19-2004 04:27 PM

Salmar made the horns of Ulmo, so I'm going to say it's him.

Upon further study I can also tell you that they are called the Ulumuri.

Is it the sea-gulls? Like when Legolas hears the sound of the gulls he is drawn to the sea.
