8/ They are related - Maeglin, the betrayer of Gondolin, was the son of Eol, the forger of Anglachel/Gurthang.

gilraën 05-06-2003 01:11 PM

Asolutely correct

Beren 3
Beruthiel 2
elven maiden Earwen 1
Saucepan Man 1

I'll be back shortly with the last 2 questions.

gilraën 05-06-2003 05:27 PM

9/ Who was Legolas' Grandfather, how/where did he die?

10/ Who were the two named Rangers of Ithlien with Faramir?

Two easy questions to finish off this round.

The Saucepan Man 05-06-2003 05:36 PM

9/ Oropher. He was slain in the Battle of Dagorlad, while leading a joint force of Elves from Greenwood and Lorien.

10/ Mablung and Damrod.

Edit: In case you need more, "Oropher was slain in the first assault upon Mordor, rushing forward at the head of his most doughty warriors before Gil-Galad had given the signal for the advance" (impetuous fool ).

gilraën 05-12-2003 05:03 PM

Beren 3
Beruthiel 2
elven maiden Earwen 1
Saucepan Man 3

Tie-breaker

Gil-Galad 05-13-2003 06:30 AM

can i still anwser?

Aqualnde, the elves taht made the Palantari for the Numernoreans?

gilraën 05-13-2003 02:27 PM

Gil-Galad I'm sorry but this is a tie-breaker for Beren and Saucepan Man, as one of them has already won.

BTW that's not the right answer.

The Saucepan Man 05-13-2003 06:39 PM

No idea, but I'll take a guess at Tirion on Tuna.

Beren87 05-13-2003 09:03 PM

Strangly, I have no idea either.

Does it have to do with some marsh?

gilraën 05-17-2003 09:24 AM

No it is an obscure reference to where Isildur lost his life.

The Saucepan Man 05-17-2003 09:07 PM

Is it the Gladden Fields, then?

gilraën 05-18-2003 04:02 AM

Yes Saucepan Man, your turn

The Saucepan Man 05-18-2003 07:15 PM

Oh good. I've not had a go at this one yet. Now, for a question ...

1) What was the name originally given to Finrod?

Eruanna 05-18-2003 07:31 PM

Finrod the Faithful?
Or do you mean a name other than Finrod?

The Saucepan Man 05-18-2003 08:12 PM

Quote:

Or do you mean a name other than Finrod?
Yes.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-18-2003 08:40 PM

Wasn't it Inglor or Ingold?

Beren87 05-19-2003 06:21 PM

Findarato! (Quenya, don'tchaknow)

The Saucepan Man 05-19-2003 06:46 PM

The original name for Finrod was Inglor Felagund, so Sophia is correct.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress: 1

2) What was believed to be in Mim's sack?

Beren87 05-19-2003 07:08 PM

Quote:

The original name for Finrod was Inglor Felagund, so Sophia is correct
No it's not, Felagund was a name given to him by the Dwarves, meaning cave-hewer, because he excavated Nargothrond.

The Saucepan Man 05-19-2003 07:20 PM

I meant the original name given to the character by Tolkien. In footnote 20 to the History of Galadriel and Celeborn in the UT Christopher Tolkien states:

Quote:

Before the revised edition of Lord of the Rings was published in 1966 my father changed Finrod to Finarfin, while his son Felagund, previously called Inglor Felagund, became Finrod Felagund.

Beren87 05-19-2003 07:41 PM

Quote:

I meant the original name given to the character by Tolkien.
Ahh...

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-19-2003 08:00 PM

Roots and small stones?

The Saucepan Man 05-19-2003 08:13 PM

Quote:

Roots and small stones?
I need more. I have in mind the mysterious contents that remained after Mim had shared with the outlaws the roots referred to as earth-bread.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-19-2003 08:33 PM

From the footnotes of Narn i Hin Hurin:
Quote:

The mystery of the other things in Mim's sack is not explained. The only other statement on the subject is a hastily scribbled note, which suggests that they were ingots of gold disguised as roots, and refers to Mim seeking "for old treasures of a dwarf-house near the 'flat stones'"
Possibly Gold, then, but in the long run it's uncertain.

The Saucepan Man 05-20-2003 06:32 PM

Quote:

ingots of gold disguised as roots
That's what I was looking for.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress: 2

3) What was the Sindarin name for the lands between the rivers Poros and Harnen?

[ May 20, 2003: Message edited by: The Saucepan Man ]

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-21-2003 12:04 AM

Harondor

The Saucepan Man 05-21-2003 11:04 AM

Harondor it was. This is rapidly turning into a runaway victory for Sophia. Any other challengers out there?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress: 3

4) What was the name of Saeros' father?

Annunfuiniel 05-21-2003 11:25 AM

Ithilbor(sp?). Sorry it took a while, I had to look that up from my UT.

Eruanna 05-21-2003 11:26 AM

I believe his father was Ithilbor.

Whoops, not quick enough.

[ May 21, 2003: Message edited by: Eruanna ]

The Saucepan Man 05-21-2003 01:32 PM

Ithilbor it is. Annun got there first, so:

Sophia the Thunder Mistress: 3
Annunfuiniel: 1

5) What was the name given to Galadriel by her mother, Earwen?

elven maiden Earwen 05-21-2003 03:23 PM

Nerwen

The Saucepan Man 05-22-2003 06:40 AM

You are, of course, correct, Earwen.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress: 3
Annunfuiniel: 1
elven maiden Earwen : 1

6) Who died in an unfortunate incident involving a tipping wheelchair and a flight of garden steps?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-23-2003 12:50 PM

Lalia Clayhanger Took (known as the Fat) wife of Thain Fortinbras II.

The Saucepan Man 05-24-2003 07:50 PM

And Sophia races further into the lead.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress: 4
Annunfuiniel: 1
elven maiden Earwen : 1

7) Who or what was the "Throng-cleaver"?

gilraën 05-26-2003 02:06 PM

Hadhafang - Arwen's sword, in the movies, a name devised for a sword by Tolkien, but never used in his stories.

The Saucepan Man 05-27-2003 11:43 AM

No, that's not the answer that I'm thinking of ...

gilraën 05-27-2003 11:56 AM

Sangahyando, a corsair of Umbar, and great grandson of Castamir?

The Saucepan Man 05-28-2003 06:53 AM

That's the fellow.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress: 4
Annunfuiniel: 1
elven maiden Earwen: 1
gilraën: 1

8) Which two characters in Lord of the Rings were born in the same year?

gilraën 05-28-2003 11:29 AM

Samwise Gamgee and Faramir, son of Denethor and brother of Boromir.
