His son Folca mounted a great campaign against the Orcs and succeeded in driving them from the Mark.
The Tolkien Companion pg. 509

Poor Walda. If I had his name I'd want to be trapped and slain by Orcs!

Since there's nothing for X, I'll go with:

Z for Zirak-zigil, one of the peaks of Moria, where Durin, the greatest of the Dwarf-lords, reigned in the Elder Days.

Diamond18 10-30-2002 11:04 AM

You forgot Y. Y is for Yavanna, the second greatest of the Valier. Her surname is Kementari, Queen of the Earth.

So, new theme! Let's be evil. Any evil characters, places, or things. If it's evil, it fits!

Melichus 10-30-2002 11:15 AM

Angband, Morgoth's northern stronghold in the first age. Destroyed in the breaking of Thangorodrim.

TolkienGurl 10-30-2002 04:45 PM

Quote:

D is for Dol Guldur 'The Hill of Darkness' (Sind.) For nearly two thousand years this evil fortress was the most feared place in Middle-earth, save only Mordor itself.
Built in the early years of the Third Age upon a stony height in the southern fastness of Greenwood the Great, Dol Guldur soon acquired a fearsome reputation. Dark clouds hung over it and evil beasts began to terrorize the forest, which was then renamed Mirkwood. The Council of the Wise (the Wizards and the Chief Eldar) assumed that one of the Ringwraiths had occupied it; even then they did not dream that Sauron was taking shape once again.

For it was the Lord of the Rings himself that had settled in Dol Guldur. To prevent his enemies striking before his own power was fully reborn, he carefully concealed his identity, so the people of the Forest knew the Power of Dol Guldur only as 'the Necromancer.' In 2063 Third Age, increasingly perturbed at the growth of evil in southern Mirkwood, Gandalf the Grey secretly entered the Tower; but Sauron managed to retreat into the East without revealing himself. Nearly eight-hundred years later the Wizard again entered Dol Guldur: this time he found the dying Dwarf Thrain in the dungeons, and discovered that the Necromancer was indeed Sauron.

Gandalf subsequently summoned the White Council and strongly urged an attack on the fortress. But, swayed by the arguments of Saruman the White (who wished only to further his own purposes), they did nothing. By this time the Necromancer's plans were nearly complete. So, in 2941, when the White Council finally agreed to attack, Sauron simply withdrew and soon openly declared himself in Mordor. The Nazgul then occupied the Tower, and it remained a place of great fear until the Elves of Lorien finally overthrew the fortress at the very end of the Third Age.
The Tolkien Companion pg. 105 - 106

I apologize for the lengthyness of my post. I couldn't bear to write a one-liner for a Tower so evil (and cool!)

E is for Ered Engrin, the Mountains of Iron that encircled Morgoth's old fortress of Utumno.

Eruhen is sorry that he forgot his alphabet. He meant to fix it in an edit, but he ran out of time in school.

TolkienGurl 11-01-2002 02:02 PM

That's from "The Complete Guide to Middle-earth. Reads kind of like a tourist's guide, doesn't it?

Beren87 11-01-2002 03:59 PM

Hmm, that would be a good book. The tourists guide to ME.

H is for Half-Orcs, servants of Saruman used by him as spies and soldiers. They were seemingly the product of a cross between men and orcs.

Glorfinniel the Lost 11-02-2002 02:38 AM

TolkienGurl 11-02-2002 11:43 AM

I dunno why no one has posted this! It's the most obvious one...

M is for Morgoth, an Ainu with a serious desire-to-destroy-everything complex.

He original name was Melkor and he was also called Belegurth, Morgoth Bauglir, Foe of the Valar, the Enemy, the Great Enemy, the Dark King, the Dark Lord, the Lord of the Dark, the Dark Power of the North, the Evil of the North, the Black Hand, the Master of Lies, the Hunter and the Rider, the Lord of the Darkness, the Lord of All, the Giver of Freedom, and the King of the World.

Even Aragorn can't beat that.

Hmm... There isn't much for Q. Actually, looking in The Tolkien Companion, there isn't anything that is evil for Q. OK. You're safe!

lathspell 11-06-2002 10:51 AM

R - Ringwraiths, the Nazgul

Diamond18 11-06-2002 12:40 PM

S is for Shelob the Great, Last Child of Ungoliant. I just love the way that sounds...

Shelob was a gigantic spider who made her lair in the Ephel Duath, by the Tower of Cirith Ungol (named after her!). She fed on Orcs, and tried to eat Frodo. She was wounded badly by Samwise the Brave, and that is the last we hear of her. Her life or death remains a mystery. (Oooooo).

TolkienGurl 11-06-2002 04:33 PM

T is for Teeth of Mordor, or Towers of the Teeth Narchost and Carchost.

T is for Thangorodrim ['Chain-of-] Fanged Mountains' (Sind.) The name given by the Grey-elves to the fortress of Morgoth the Enemy in the north of Middle-earth during the Elder Days, the capital and chief stronghold of Angband, Morgoth's dreaded realm.

T is for Torech Ungol 'Lair of the Spider'

T is for Tower of Cirith Ungol

T is for Two Watchers, or the Silent Watchers
