Arestevana 09-08-2003 05:00 PM

Nope. Good guess though.

Arestevana 09-11-2003 02:50 PM

No more takers?

A hint:
The first paragraph: Two lines form a cryptic clue toward the person's name, and two give instructions on solving the second paragraph.
Second Paragraph: A clue toward the person's name, revealed by directions in the first paragraph.
Third Paragraph: Clue toward the person themself. This paragraph should be taken quite literally.

Aredhel?
I can't shake the conviction that it must be a woman.

Cathelm 09-11-2003 05:23 PM

I've got the same feeling as Evisse.
Best I can think of is Niniel, the Tear-Maiden

Arestevana 09-12-2003 02:13 PM

No and No.
The best hint I can give is what I said before: The person's name is actually in the question. And yes, it is a woman.

Airerūthiel 09-12-2003 02:26 PM

I would say Aragorn but as it's not a major character...I'm stumped.

I'll take a wild guess at Beren (although I have no idea where that came from).

Evisse the Blue 09-12-2003 03:31 PM

My last guess on this would be Arwen. (heart - when).

The Saucepan Man 09-12-2003 06:08 PM

It's staring you in the face, folks.

Great clue, by the way, Arestevana. You should join us more often in the Cryptic Clue thread.

Arestevana 09-13-2003 07:04 AM

Airerūthiel: I think you're reading the first page.
No, it is not Arwen.
Saucepan: Congratulations, would you like to go now?
Somehow I think all the other cryptic people are already on Cryptic Clues, seeing as how no one's getting this one and I can never figure one out over there.

Evisse the Blue 09-13-2003 08:03 AM

I'm officially the stupidest person on these boards because I still don't get it!
Is it Nienna?
Mr Saucepan, sir, please don't leave us humble ones in the dark and tell us who the person is!

Arestevana 09-13-2003 11:05 AM

*sighs* Not Nienna.
Okay: The person's name is actually spelt out in the second paragraph. The last two lines of the first paragraph will show you where.

I see it! I see it! Cheese, you weren't lying when you said it was staring us in the face...
It's Morwen, folks!!!

Evisse the Blue 09-14-2003 08:10 PM

Ai! ::hits head on keyboard:: ::and again:: ::and again::
"in excess of questioned time" - more; + when
-->Morwen of course! - "absurdly simple like most riddles when you see the answer".
Who am I kidding, I never would have got it; congratulations, Catehelm!

Cathelm 09-14-2003 09:54 PM

Actually, I got it by looking at the first letters in the second paragraph thing. I wouldn't have been able to get it your way, Evisse, so good for you! I don't have anything ready, so I'll just think on it until Arestevana confirms my answer.

Arestevana 09-15-2003 03:50 PM

And confirm it I will. Please continue, Cathelm!

Cathelm 09-19-2003 09:18 PM

Thankee much, Arestevana! This is probably waaaay too easy for you folks, but we shall see.

A namesake of precious metals,
He lived in the city, among the petals.
But before long peace met its horror,
They packed their bags and went to war.
But victory they could not defend,
He met the stunted father's end.
A reincarnation of himself,
I ask of you: Who is this elf?

Evisse the Blue 09-20-2003 05:21 AM

Is it Glorfindel?

Cathelm 09-20-2003 06:01 PM

*sigh* I knew it was easy... I will think of a better one next time. Your turn Evisse.

Evisse the Blue 09-22-2003 01:21 PM

I am a firstborn flower in the sun,
I tend to ages past and look to ages come.
A guardian am I,
and a fair one too.
All that do see me, love me,
so would you.

who am I?

Mithisilien 09-22-2003 01:29 PM

Galadriel?

Arestevana 09-22-2003 02:34 PM

Elanor?

maikafanawen 09-22-2003 04:30 PM

Yavanna?

Evisse the Blue 09-23-2003 05:30 AM

Arestevana, the floor is yours again

Arestevana 09-24-2003 03:04 PM

Thanks.
This is a little odd, but:

Missing just two of them, I am strong in health, but nameless.

Arestevana 09-27-2003 06:30 PM

No guesses?

Finwe 09-27-2003 10:05 PM

Maglor?

Gil-Galad 09-28-2003 08:10 AM

Maedhros?

Arestevana 09-28-2003 05:25 PM

Is it that bad? Sorry, not even close.

Gil-Galad 09-29-2003 04:16 PM

gandalf? i hosnesty don't knwo maybe yo ushoudl give more hints

Arestevana 09-29-2003 04:26 PM

Okay. It is entirely cryptic. There are no intentional clues toward the person themselves, only toward their name. You are only working with words and letters, not with LotR characters or anything. The biggest hint: Find a word that fits the definition. This is part of the name.

Arestevana 10-01-2003 01:37 PM

No one? HINT: Think of a word that means 'strong in Health'

Turambar 10-01-2003 02:00 PM

Haleth ?

Arestevana 10-01-2003 02:06 PM

Haleth it is!
