Then would it be Daeron?

Turambar 02-16-2004 12:31 PM

Not Daeron. "Faithful friend" is the straight clue. There's a very obvious cryptic clue in there.

Finwe 02-16-2004 01:15 PM

*smacks self in the head*

It's Beleg.

Re-posting:

1. Isenmouthe -- Sounds like a cooling cure for drouth in a dead land.
2. Ibun -- Leave one small bread for the second-last of his kind.
3. Dwaling -- Un-tardy dwarf, with Gondor’s first, visits remote village.
4. Seems that 100 well prepared Bree-men were scattered and killed.
5. Beleg --Alliterative lines describe legend of the faithful friend.
6. Nimloth -- Elegant court dweller wore white blossom for 30 centuries.

HINTS FOR #4 - Scramble. Person.

Celebrian 02-16-2004 07:21 PM

Red herrings and hithlain! Arg! #4 has me stumped still. All I can think of at the moment is the Scouring of the Shire, which is not a scrambled person (perhaps many persons scrambling, hah!).

Is the password CARL COTTON, Nib's ID?

Finwe 02-16-2004 09:24 PM

Blind guess here...

4) Lenwë?

Evisse the Blue 02-17-2004 02:14 AM

#4 - Boromir? (will explain if proves to be right) wil refuse to explain if it's wrong:o :p

Turambar 02-17-2004 06:17 AM

Not Lenwë or Boromir. Two words in the riddle are straight clues. The answer is, as I said, only one person. Three elements of the clue comprise the scramble.

As for the Password, follow the clues and you'll find it.

Finwe 02-17-2004 07:01 PM

Emeldir?

Turambar 02-18-2004 07:38 AM

No. I'll refine the hint: Bree-men and killed are straight clues; three elements comprise the scramble, and the answer is one person.

I am afraid that I am going to have to close this thread as it is way over the maximum thread length.

Turambar, would you mind starting a new thread and re-posting the rules of the game together with your current conundrum?

Thanks. :)

Turambar 02-18-2004 12:50 PM

Password 2.0

Rules for this game:

1. The questioner gives a series of questions, each leading to an answer (which the questioner will confirm when guessed).

2. The first letters of the answers form the Password (see example below).

3. Traditionally, the questions can be (but aren't required to be) on the tricksy side, and can include “cryptic clues”, as well summarized by The Saucepan Man here (i.e., anagrams, synonyms, "sounds like" clues, etc.)

4. The first person to guess the “Password” wins the game, although you still have to solve any remaining questions.

5. You’re allowed to tinker with Rule #2.

Simple example:

(1) Noldor, Sindar or Vanyar.
(2) First Telerin deserter.
(3) Monsters of the Last Desert.
(4) Not a man, to the Witch King’s regret.

Answers:

(1) Elf.
(2) Lenwë.
(3) Wereworms.
(4) Éowyn.

Password: ELWË.

Here’s the current puzzle – only #4, and the Password, remain to be guessed:

1. Isenmouthe -- Sounds like a cooling cure for drouth in a dead land.
2. Ibun -- Leave one small bread for the second-last of his kind.
3. Dwaling -- Un-tardy dwarf, with Gondor’s first, visits remote village.
4. Rowlie Appledore -- Seems that 100 well prepared Bree-men were scattered and killed.
5. Beleg -- Alliterative lines describe legend of the faithful friend.
6. Nimloth -- Elegant court dweller wore white blossom for 30 centuries.

HINTS for #4: It's a person. Bree-men and killed are straight clues. Three elements of the clue comprise a scramble.

HINT for the password: follow the clues and you'll find it.

Firefoot 02-18-2004 02:39 PM

Is it Rowlie Appledore?

Turambar 02-18-2004 02:42 PM

Correct !

Indeed it is - an anagram of IOO WELL PREPARED.

Now just guess the Password, and the honor of going next is yours ! :D

HINTS for the Password:

* Follow the clues !
* More than six letters.

Finwe 02-18-2004 04:57 PM

Hmm... they seem to be somehow representative of all the races in Middle-earth... does that have anything to do with the password?

Turambar 02-18-2004 08:44 PM

Let's try this

How about -

* Follow the clues initially,
* Be aware of Rule #5 (above),
* Then guess the 12-letter Password.

:D

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-18-2004 08:53 PM

A silly guess...

Is it Middle-earth?

Great. Nice guess. Next you'll tell me you're not failing Physics.

Am not...wait, I am. But who cares - I'm shifting, remember.

A new alter-ego comes: Guys, this is the Quiz Room, not a private message.

OK. *shuts up*

OK. My answer's still Middle-earth.

The Saucepan Man 02-19-2004 06:08 AM

*Eureka!!*

Quote:

* Follow the clues initially,
Well, the initials of the answers are IIDRBN

Quote:

* Be aware of Rule #5 (above),
So, it's not just the intitials, huh? ;)

Quote:

* Then guess the 12-letter Password.
Ah, so we need another 6 letters. How about adding another letter after each of those that we already have ...

I-I-D-R-B-N-

Ah, there it is ...

ISILDUR'S BANE

:smokin:

Turambar 02-19-2004 06:28 AM

Yes !

The letters you "added" were simply the first letters of each clue.

You're up, Saucepan. :smokin:

Celebrian 02-19-2004 08:06 AM

There certainly was lots of entertainment value in that last tricksy one, Turambar! Thanks!
Oh, goody, a Saucy special's up next.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

You haven't made a single meaningful post since page 12 of Password 1.0! Now this!

The Saucepan Man 02-21-2004 05:51 AM

Gah! The pressure! :D

OK, short but sweet:

1. Bringer of a heavenly harvest?
2. Commonly said to be the longest bearer of the One Ring.
3. Named speakers.
4. Remove first letter of alphabet poorly.
5. Lofty Elven title.

:smokin:

Evisse the Blue 02-21-2004 05:58 AM

1. Yavanna
2. Sauron, Lord of the Rings
5. Tar

NightKnight 02-21-2004 07:30 AM

3. Quendi?

Arestevana 02-21-2004 07:44 AM

Or Perhaps...

1. Sickle of the Valar? Valacirya?

Celebrian 02-21-2004 02:40 PM

3) ELVES, "first to give voice to the music and make song"?
4) RUNE ?

The Saucepan Man 02-21-2004 10:14 PM

Some good answers there. I'll fill in the correct ones:

1. Valacirca: Bringer of a heavenly harvest?
2. Commonly said to be the longest bearer of the One Ring.
3. Quendi: Named speakers.
4. Remove first letter of alphabet poorly.
5. Lofty Elven title.

#3 is "Quendi" rather than "Elves", because the name means "Those who speak with voices".

Miriel 02-22-2004 05:03 AM

5. Hir?

NightKnight 02-22-2004 06:40 AM

5. High King?

Turambar 02-22-2004 07:00 AM

#2 Anduin ?

The Saucepan Man 02-22-2004 06:01 PM

No more correct answers yet, but you are very much on the right track (or waterway ;) ), Turambar. :)

Turambar 02-22-2004 06:28 PM

Since you said commonly - Great River ?

E: or Long River ?

The Saucepan Man 02-22-2004 07:41 PM

Getting closer ... ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-23-2004 12:26 AM

2. Gladden.

Turambar 02-23-2004 07:23 AM

The One Ring didn't lie in the Gladden, though; it was in the Anduin - in Westron, Great River.

Langflood ?

Evisse the Blue 02-23-2004 07:31 AM

#5. Ar(a)

The Saucepan Man 02-23-2004 07:38 AM

Langflood is correct

1. Valacirca: Bringer of a heavenly harvest?
2. Langflood: Commonly said to be the longest bearer of the One Ring.
3. Quendi: Named speakers.
4. Remove first letter of alphabet poorly.
5. Lofty Elven title.

You got there in the end, Turambar. ;)

Sorry, Evisse, that's not the title I'm looking for.

Finwe 02-23-2004 06:30 PM

5) heru or hiril?

Arvedui III 02-23-2004 08:37 PM

5) Aran, maybe?

Celebrian 02-24-2004 08:42 AM

4) Is this tinco-related? Tin-something perhaps...
